    Bought this MkII club 40 amp originally just as a back up amp to leave at a rehearsal room. It has become my main amp and I have a few. Changed the speaker out to a Celestion V30, louder, clearer and even more beautiful tones, perfect upgrade. This is an incredible amp for the money. It will do everything and handles all my pedals wonderfully well up front and in the effects loop.

    I have the original that I got for a ridiculous price used, but they did a nice job upgrading this. Played it in the store and everything is just a little bit more harmonic, but still tight. It doesn’t get the love it should. It fixes a lot of the issues from the vintage brands that are sorta stuck with their classic voicings that come with certain issues.

    Found a special edition of this called Kentucky special. Red casing, 6L6 tubes, and they claim screaming eagle is an upgraded speaker.
    Like their tvp amps highlight, almost nothing out there has the lows and highs like some 6L6s. The clarity on top of the aggressive palm mutes is lovely.

    If you had to choose between this and the HT20 MK2 in terms of versatility, which would you go for?

  • @crypticzen9194
    @crypticzen9194 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Can confirm after having this amp for almost 2 years. It’s reliable, loud, and versatile. However probably tops out at around 90’s metal. A lot of noise with the gain dimed especially with the “modern voicing” selected. If you want a 5150 then get a 5150. If you want to play anything from chuck berry to rage against the machine. This amp can hang.
    Wondering if some of the noise I described could be the fact I haven’t ever biased the tubes. Been thinking about upgrading them and maybe getting a greenback or something else to replace the 70/80. Still not a bad place to start for my first tube amp. I’m happy with it.

    • @keysersoze9667

      How’s it sound at bedroom volumes? Debating between this and a DSL40. I play primarily Adam Jones “tool” tones

    • @crypticzen9194
      @crypticzen9194 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@keysersoze9667 honestly I play at bedroom levels 90% of the time. I’ll crank it on the weekends. It gets quiet enough to play any time day or night. Yes it has the 4 watt mode. I have used it. It’s not a terrible feature at all. In fact I’ve forgotten I left it engaged the next day and turned it up and it still gets loud enough to not realize I was using it. It’s just with channel volume and master volume, you really don’t need it.
      I might learn some tool just to confirm it can do it. I think it should be fine. Probably want some effects pedals to compliment it. Seems like tool used some effects like chorus but I can’t remember as it’s been a while since I listened. On that note I have a boss katana 2x12 that I use for modeling and haven’t really used pedals through the Blackstar yet. So I can’t comment on that.

    • @crypticzen9194
      @crypticzen9194 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@keysersoze9667 I would also just clarify that it has decent tone at low volume. Even if you do need to push it a little to get the full sound. if you were playing on the clean channel for a certain part of a song and you wanted a little break up at low volume. Then you might actually get use out of the 4 watt mode.

    • @isaacarussi5822
      @isaacarussi5822 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Especially with this demo. A lot of the people who demo this amp play a lot of heavy stuff and pay like no attention to the clean Chanel and can’t dial in a good clean tone. This guy actually really showcases those cleans for which is great for me cause I like pedals

    • @undercrackers56

      @@isaacarussi5822 I can attest that the Stage 60 gives truly juicy and haunting clean tones in addition to "punch in the face" dirty tones. More than adequate! I used to run my HT-20RH Mk II direct -- a couple times with no cabinet because we had started using in-ear monitors. IIRC, I think I preferred the 1x12 mode because 4x12 sounded a bit flubby. Hell, even my inexpensive Boss Katana Head has good emulated line out tones. For playing live, I try not to overthink and avoid IR-related rabbit holes. My biggest problem with modern gear (especially modelers) is that it's too easy to spend more time tweaking than actually playing.

All I said was this video doesn't do it any justice in tone dept at all. I using my volume knob for gain. And just bending like a fiend. Sustains for days. On this amp. It kills. Don't u think so.

    • @matthewcoenen6957

      I don't know if you're still in the market... But, if you keep this amp set in the F-type clean voice on channel 1, you have as good a pedal platform as a Fender twin: loud and clean. To my ear, the Blackstar isn't quite as mid-scooped or trebley as a twin. Which, for me is a plus. But that is a matter of taste; lot's of people love the twin. If super clean / pedal platform is all you want, your best bet might be to look at used Fender amps on Reverb.com or your local music store. I believe this amp would work for you, but you might end up paying for 4 channels and never using 3 of them. I actually played for several years with a used bass amp which I got a ridiculous deal on (and an eq pedal to force the voicing that I wanted). It was very clean throughout the entire volume sweep and louder than I ever needed! I had a couple of pedals that took care of my OD and reverb, so that wasn't a problem. If you see a good deal on a used bass amp, that might be something to consider too.

      You are joking right? Your tripping out in my opinion, this sounds nothing like a SS amp. It's full power tube output tube with 2 pre tubes with assisted gain circuit. The thing that's stupid is if it just had the 2 pre tubes minus its gain circuit and you put a tube screamer (gain circuit) in front of it then you'd be happy, all they did is put the pedal inside of it (no different to a pedal) and they did a cracking job. People spend $4G on Kempers and AxeFX and they are modelers (virtual gain circuits) and then put it through the clean on a tube amp that uses very minimal of the preamp tubes and people gush over them. Some people just trip on their own thoughts and convince themselves that something isn't right when majority of people love it. These amps are worth more than the asking price and are giant killers in the amplifier market as the sales numbers speak for themselves as these blackstars have a reputation of great tones for the buck. Put a V30 and JJ tubes in this HT40 MkII and it's will keep up with anything on the market and I mean anything. Peace to you my friend and just my opinions : D

      MJ Millar even if you are a 15 year old that only plays with distortion, the cleans still matter. Everything is built off the cleans. If they don’t sing out of the amp in a strong, soaring way (without clipping too early) its a bad sign. Also chorus and delay only work if I want to sound like chorus and delay. I don’t.
