Betty had a genuine and deep affection for all her co-stars as evidenced by countless interviews, panels and her auto-biography.
She was the epitome of an absolute class act. RIP to an absolute amazing queen. She’s one in a million.. &; she aged so gracefully. I guess being funny and truly lighthearted keeps you young☺️☺️.
Betty White -- what a live wire! I love the gentle ribbing she gives Johnny, and his reactions. TV has never been enjoyalbe to me since Johnny left, and Betty White was such a gem. What a wonderful video! Thanks for posting!
Sheer gold. Nothing in talk shows today compared to the terrific banter fun and joy of this moment here. This is the true Talent of Betty White and Johnny Carson
THIS is why I used to love late night TV - and talk shows - so much. Without ever veering from classy, they would still be funny, risqué even, gentle without being saccharin, and truly truly fun. Betty and Johnny bantering together, it is a JOY to watch them almost forty years later!
We may be older, but we also stayed up late to enrich our minds and hearts with late night. I don't like any of them now. Too crass. Too loud. Too much kissing tushes. David Letterman had man good interviews, as did Conan. But Johnny and Tom were great. I liked Arsenio as a young person. He was hip.
Carson didn't have competition at the same hour because the other networks didn't try and well they shouldn't. There was only one other person on television that I have witnessed with the same skill to draw out the best in a guest (Sports Anchor Bob Lobell). Betty was extremely talented - she also knew that she "had the floor" for these few minutes. BECAUSE Carson owned late night, he didn't care so much about keeping ratings from others. I believe that Johnny had quite a bit of control over who would be on his show next whereas today; the Producer is being directed by the parent corporation that a product (movie, TV show) also owned by the corporation needs to be promoted. Guests come on when their movie is being released and "oh by the way, we have a clip". There was of course; some of that on Carson but it WAS a different time. President R.R. is responsible for all the media consolidation possible under the powers of the Executive Branch. Just a few years later, the rest of the nails hammered home the corporate dominance. It was called the Telecommunications Act, it was wholly written and approved by Republicans in the Legislature and rather than Veto it so (R)'s would OWN it, Billy Clinton signed it. The result is that now; late night is a product, a vehicle to promote other products and so, the ability of the hosts to wrestle back some of what Carson did is up to them in the fewer minutes of freedom they are given. I DO think that Jimmy Kimmel is as unconcerned about his job as Carson was and so, he hands over the reigns to other very capable (at least temporarily anyway) guest hosts. Kimmel IS a very clever person and so, may continue to grow in the role. Later on NBC, Seth Meyers has "A Closer Look" (it's on TH-cam as well) that's always well worth watching plus I think that that hour allows him some of the freedom that Carson had. Jon Stewart of "the Daily Show" used to host 20 minutes of a simply unbeatable Show where most often; a politician would debate themselves using video of them on both sides of any issue. Stewart was terrible at interviews however so it was only worthwhile to catch "Your Moment of Zen" just before the Credits rolled. Ironically, Jon is on TH-cam and not doing what he and his former Staff did best but INTERVIEWING.... I've watched a handful. Last, I will mention Stephen Colbert who graduated from "the Daily Show" onto his own Show and then the corporate mother ship put him in Letterman's CBS slot. Colbert had been a muckraker and tried doing that a couple of times on the Mother Ship where he was promptly given the rest of the week off to compare his salary with his mortgage payment. I'll leave you all with an actual quote from CBS CEO Leslie Moonves on Donald Trump: _“It May Not Be Good for America, but It’s Damn Good for CBS”._ So _"YEAH, Colbert and others. Cash in on the controversy if you like"_ but if you were paying attention as I did, you would have noticed who was called "popular" every day on all of them and who was equally popular but completely ignored until the Superdelegates could do THEIR Thang and we were left with "popular" versus not, instead of the 2 most popular choices - and only one of them with the kind of record that the other one adopted for his campaign speeches (only).
Watching this interview makes me suddenly, all too late, appreciative, of Carson's interview style in which he never serves as the center of the interview, but a facilitator for the guest to share his or her stories. Carson was the consummate interview show host, a one in a billion. RIP.
Yes, truly the secret to his success. If need be, he would be a little more talkative with a guest that wasn't so much. And before you knew it, they would find their comfort zone and it would be a great conversation.
You are so right. When Jay Leno took over I was horrified, and saddened, that he never let the guests go off on a tangent, or even respond properly to anything--he interrupted with wisecracks continually. Jay Leno made the most interesting person look boring. Johnny Carson made the more boring person interesting, and he made interesting people incredible.

Betty showing why Betty is, and how she became, a legend. Holding her own ... nay! ... taking charge of men who were legends of their own! My gut tells me Betty never entered a room full of men without knowing she would slay. And if that isn't the very definition of sexy, then I don't know what is. Old Broads are definitely the best!
Saw much of Life With Elizabeth as well as Date With The Angels. Especially for those days, they were funny shows. Even enjoyed her on game shows. (Mostly Password) shortly after she started on Mary Tyler Moore, was a major fan. On tribute shows, (like one for Morgan Freeman) her whimsy and risque humor was a treat. Her delivery impeccable. She will be greatly missed.

As someone who lives only 5 miles from Intercourse, PA and goes shopping all the time at the King-of-Prussia Mall, Betty makes me smile in a whole new way. The fact that she could remember those town names even as a lifelong Californian is just really impressive.
Fun TV tech: We can see the boom mic "dip in" occasionally as today we are viewing the full scanned picture. TV's you bought back when (CRT) included a plastic (usually) frame around the picture tube that cropped off the edges to give the home viewer a clean, slightly smaller, perfect rectangle. In the studio, crew knew that if you could just see the mic in the top of the frame, it was as close to the talent as possible and wouldn't be seen at home. In the black and white days, actors wore green pancake makeup to look healthy on screen. The blinking dots across the top of some video is the encoded closed captioning track. 30 fps is actually 29.97 in analogue video. I know lots of useless stuff from the olden days...
RIP Johnny and Betty! Thanks for all the joy and the laughter. You may be gone but your comedy will never die.

If you watch Ms. White when she plays Rose, her facial nuances are spectacular she does so many in a fraction of time.
I loved Betty White in the Mary Tyler Moore show. She wasnt always old.
Betty really was one in a million. Such charm, kindness and grace, even when she's talking about blue balls! LOL.
One of a billion, I would say…
@@chefbillybaroo2056 true.
I loved Betty White. She loved animals and I heard off screen she would tell dirty jokes 😂I thought she was so funny as Rose on the Golden Girls. Wonderful sense of humor ❤. RIP. She lived to be almost 100 year's old. God Bless her.
Betty was one of the greatest comedians we have ever had, and she lived a very long happy fulfilling life.
QE2 had to have one of the most fairytale lives ever lived, and
She also lived a long happy life
The expression on Johnny’s face when Betty mentions his ex-wives is comedy gold. Johnny will always remain the king of late night talk shows. He is missed.
this world could use a Johnny Carson in it these days. to see that late night could be funny and not just a political joke that never ends.
At least Carson was good with political jokes.
She barely aged a day since then, both physically and mentally. She was sharp as a tack till the day she died.
Thank you for being a friend Betty. Rest in power.
Jimmy Fallon, can’t hold a candle to Johnny Carson.
No one can; JC was the GOAT!!!
But Johnny could NEVER lip sync like Jimmy. Jimmy is much more versatile, a real comedian.
God Bless them all,
they gave us so many laughs and memories.
An actual talk show host. And he's entertaining. Haven't seen one of those in decades
Funny watching her bust his chops!!! 😂😂😂
I miss both of them!
Such a great historical interview, Johinny n Betty! Am missing wondetful lifes distractions of war n killing that they were willing to put out for us.
Just laughs n good times! L
The humor, comedy sketches and Artists of them days were CLASSY and much more entertaining than the 21st Century ❤.
One can have FUN without cursing....
I have to come back and watch this from time to time. Old broads are the best!!
Betty was always had class was so charming as well as funny. She always looked and spoke to not just Johnny, but other guests including them in her conversation like personal friends. Wanted to include everybody like she was the party hostess and wanted to make everybody feel loved and important. God Blss.
Johnny , Betty , and Doris day .... national treasures
I guess you know you're old when you can't stand any of the current popular people...
@@fredingram3731 So right , oh , I forgot one of my favorites , Bob Hope , I still watch the old Vietnam U.S.O. shows , especially with Joey Heatherton . Whoa!
I love Betty White.
Stacy, I love her more. Been loving her for Sixty plus years. I'm 64 years old now. My Mom told me a few years ago, that everytime Betty White's name was mentioned on TV I came running to see her. She was my idol. I @ 3 years old was in love with her....RIP....Mommy , & you too Betty...One of these days I'll get to meet Betty White & see my Mom again. LOVE you both....🥲😪😇
@@marvinalancornell8275 I’m 62 and I didn’t know that she existed until the Mary Tyler Moore show. She was so hilarious as Sue Ann Nivens
The world could do with more Betty White. Very much missed.
"You went somewhere in Pennsylvania. Intercourse or Blue Balls....."😂😂😂
As someone who lives only 5 miles from Intercourse, PA and goes shopping all the time at the King-of-Prussia Mall, Betty makes me smile in a whole new way. The fact that she could remember those town names even as a lifelong Californian is just really impressive.
Betty and Johnny are the peanut butter cups of late night talk shows! They taste great together! 😋
Aw - I so miss them both. What fun it was to see them here.
what a fun interview:)
I appreciate your knowledge on the subject👍
Betty White was the best! What a wit! Loved her! ❤❤❤
Betty at the 1:50 mark. Johnny always had the best expressions.
