The other Predator movies had comedic elements but that was maybe 10% of the runtime. The rest of the time they were pretty serious sci-fi horror action movies. It wasn't like they were cracking jokes the whole time.

Jesse Diaz if you watch Ramboraph4life's video on Predator 2, he gives it high praise. It is the more underrated movie of the series. Sure it has its flaws with the whole Jamaican Voodoo Posse storyline, but those Jamaican gangs were big news at the time and the director wanted to incorporate that into the film. This movie just tries too hard to be like the original and IMO it fails.

Also the Jamaican gangs were all over the action movies of the early 90s as a result of the country of Jamaica giving pardons to the convicts and opening up the prisons at the time.

I think it could have been an anthology where different protagonists go against the Predator/s at different times and places (on Earth or outside of it), which I guess it's what the franchise currently is but badly planned and written. I know this is 'heresy' but I think trying to shoehorn in Arnold in it would be a mistake. I think that was one of the factors that ended up hurting the Terminator franchise as well. For instance, I would have loved to see a film where the Colonial Marines go against a/multiple predator/s.
About the Robert Rodriguez film "Predators" that wasn't their home planet but a game reserve they had if you watch Alien vs Predator Requiem you see their home world in the beginning of the film.
Exactly…and now 3yrs. later in their review for the prequel “Prey” (2022), Korey keeps on insisting on incorrectly describing it as “the predator home-world”. If he’s going to be critical, he should at least be accurate. 🤷🏾♂️
As someone who saw the movie, where did Korey get the idea that Boyd Holbrook and his friends, the Loonies, are mercenaries? Martin is correct in saying that they are only soldiers with mental issues. Holbrook was an enlisted sniper at the beginning of the movie.
Predator (original) is the one movie where I disagree with Martin the most. His complain about it being 'too macho' doesn't make sense since all the top action movies in the 80's were about macho men with muscles and guns trying to outdo each other. In that regard it was no different. Also I disagree that it was all about Arnold. Arnold was already established superstar of action movies by then. Compared to Commando (1985), where he is basically a one man army, Arnold was way toned down in Predator. It's one of the few movies which is as much about the Antagonist as it is about Protagonist. The first half is all about the Predator. I still remember the suspense for better half of the movie on who/what the predator was. And the technology and effects used were top notch for its time. The sound effects were also superb. And the movie has aged well (which is rare for action movies from the 80's that use CG). I have watched the movie once every 5 years or so and it surprises me that I still enjoy it every time.
It's one of the few 80s Arnold action movies where Arnold isn't invincible. As for "macho" all the guys are scared to the point they shoot down a jungle out of fear. It's an ensemble movie with Carl Weathers having equal sway and center place until he dies, until the very end when Arnold is left alone with the Predator then it becomes about him. The biggest dudes are dead so soon that any idea of macho man bravado is completely gone anyway. It's one of the few Arnold vehicles where Arnold isn't superhuman, he gets his ass beat by the Predator and he almost dies but the Predator stops himself.
The original predator is a satire. The creators of original predator talked about it being a satire on multiple occasions. So, I'm sorry, but Martin is kind of right. It deliberately populated the movie with a bunch of OTT mucho stereotypes for satirical effect in order to make fun of mucho action heroes. And then all those mucho guys were killed by a predator with vagina dentata. And again, it's not my interpretation. The predator was a satire, it's a fact. Multiple people who made the predator have confirmed it.

For this to be a satire it had to be a clear comedy to make any distinction from normal action movies at that time. Do you see comedy anywhere in its description? The Last Action Hero was a satire of the 80's. This wasn't by any stretch. Unless you think every 80's action flick is a satire. And I am talking about the end movie product. Not what the creators had in mind when they first wrote the script.
I was gonna just let this film pass but yall sold me on it seeing it this weekend xD Edit JUST Saw it Originally I thought I was gonna Moan and groan through the new Predator movie but i thought it was Awesome!! Predators does feel more like a sequel to the first film, but it's still considered a sequel to both Predator & Predator 2. Both sequels (Predator 2 & Predators) mention either Arnold's character or "The Mission" that he & his team were on in the first one. Gary Busey's character in the second film is directly connected to Arnold's character from the first one as it's vaguely mentioned that he was the one who set up "The Mission" & sent Arnold & his team in.
For what it is and what Shane Black does I did in fact have a fun time. I never really expected the magic of the first one or the brutish nature of the second one so I was just seeing what Black would do. Low and behold Black created something I can wholeheartedly say I enjoyed and had a great time with it

Arnie was the king of a good chunk of action films throughout the 80s up to the early 90s with T2, everything went down the drain with Eraser, Jingle all the Way and Batman abd Robin. I agree that the film should have worked if a larger than life actor like Arnie played the survivor that fought the preds. Sadly the muscle bound hero trope is dead in this age, it would be labeled as "toxic masculinity". I am surprised Dwayne Johnson was not approached to play the part.

it had plenty, but it wasn't a terrible and goofy movie like this. people's standards are so low nowadays. the first movie wasn't even about the predator. they changed the creature halfway through production from a guy in a praying mantis suit. and therein lies the problem. a good concept movie that was simple and effective milked into a bad franchise where dweebs who can't write for shit pump out bad sequels that dive so deep into the lore that they completely ruin or disregard the lore, and general logic. as if there is a point to the predators saving humans (lol) or mutating the be the hulk. dumb movie for people satisfied with anything that has moving pictures on screen.

The guy oozes Charisma and bad ass, but also a sense of vulnerability that he's not afraid to show. The "loonies" are what made the movie good and gave u feeling of nostalgia for the first film. The developed the characters and made u care about all of them. In the first film u could feel the brotherhood between all the characters so it sucked when each died. Except for the fist death (the least developed loon) every death really sucked. It's my second favorite move in the franchise
I mostly agree with korey's review. Characters are likable, good dialogue, decent action and some funny moments and yes, I also agree the biggest issue with this movie is the writing. My biggest gripe with this film is everything is just too convenient. Beyond just the motorcycles that were mentioned in the review there were certain characters that knew how to use weapons without any mention of training or a previous history with weapons and knew how to pick locks because they needed to get out of a lock. The kid who knows how to read alien languages, that was also mentioned in the review who dropped his autism after it stopped being necessary or how toward the end of the film a certain something happened that didn't actually happen because they wanted to set up a sequel. There are still plenty of things to enjoy in this movie, if I really wanted knit pick I'd mention how bad some of the CG gore effects look but I'm only pointing this out because there is so much gore. The movie follow a formula, again as stated in the review but if you've been on a rollercoaster once before, it doesn't get boring just because you know what turns it's gonna take. Rental.
This sounds like it’s gonna be a fun time! Nothing will top the first original film with Arnold, but The Predator - from the sound of this review - looks as if it’ll fit into that between Predator and Predators with its tone.

Predator 2 is very underrated unlike Predators where its filled with errors like the girl talking about Arnie's team and how they killed it but yet no one decides to do the same thing until the very end with Brody....makes no sense. At least Danny Glover beats the shit out of it instead of using traps. You have more than one Predator and yet they die quick unlike the first & second movie. That's like if I had more than one Jason in Friday the 13th but somehow its much easier to defeat them. Plus Brody trying to sound like Bail's Batman is silly. Maybe I'll change my mind if the Predator 2018 is way worse because of the comedy I keep hearing about.
I agree about Glover's character from the 2nd movie, as Harrigan was ballsy enough to kick a Predator's ass on his own turf (the inside of the spaceship) and lived to tell the tale, and even got the old flintlock pistol as a trophy out of ordeal.
I was looking forward to this movie but since Korey & Martin described this as a comedy I'm disappointed. But I'll go see it anyway I wanted a serious Predator movie hoping it would put Predator back in the franchise.
When Predators threw out the single, otherwise insignificant line, that excluded Predator 2 from the canon, I immediately lost a little enthusiasm and every flaw, from then on out, stood out like a sore thumb. On the second watch, I couldn't even finish it. Ironic that it dismisses the way better second movie while never once achieving any of its awesome momentum.

I ate some great food today at a restaurant in Bilosi, Ms. It's a Vietnamese restaurant I forgot the name of the place, but it's almost close to IP casino. I was invited, and ate for free since I am poor, and broke. I ordered a hardy soup called Pho Dac Biet, really good food. I love Vietnamese food.
I was highly disappointed in this movie. Predator is a monster! A savage calculating terrifying beast that is not to fucked with. Yet in this movie we have Olivia Munn running the predator down with a tranquilizer gun. I couldn't believe what I was watching. Very disappointing.....no way !

SPOILERS This review made me think of how I would have ended this movie. I loved it, but I didnt care much for the Predator suit. Picture this: McKenna and his colleagues look on to this capsule, which the Fugitive calls the "Only super weapon capable of defeating Predators". Keyes opens the capsule, which opens slowly, with fog misting out of the inside. Keyes looks inside curiously, taking notes on a notepad, until suddenly, a face hugger leaps out and wraps around his face, locking its tail tightly around his neck. He abruptly falls over, McKenna and the others look at eachother in confusion, and medics try despirately to remove the creature. Cut to black. Credits roll.
I want to see a gritty predator movie set in the Middle East, taking down realistic soldiers. I can just imagine the predator blending in with the heat rising from the desert.
Arnold was supposed to appear at the end of the game Planet predators in 2010 but due to timing schedule he couldn't do it but this is a direct sequel to that movie for sure and of course the original.
Just got back from seeing it and I was reasonably excited for this one due to Shane Black directing and co-writing the script. Discounting the AVP movies, the Predator series has been solid on the whole with one masterpiece (Predator), an underrated sequel (Predator 2) and a decent third entry that expanded the lore (Predators). Now having said all that, my fucking God was The Predator a mess. There are times where Black's wicked sense of humor shines through (Ex. The Shotgun scene) and a few good action bits, but overall it's a muddled and incoherent misfire. I've been reading articles stating that this movie was subjected to a ton of reshoots with large alterations to the third act and it really shows in the final product. The editing is choppy beyond belief, the dialogue is cringe-inducing (Ex. You beautiful motherfucker), most of the characters are either wasted (Ex. Jake Busey) or painfully under-developed, the tone is jarringly un-even, certain plot elements make no sense at all and the action fails to excite for the most part. And don't get me started on that half-assed stinger at the end.
Me and my bud got back from a early screening and I haven't felt this split or mixed about a film since Last Jedi. There's a lot to like, but a lot to hate too. I just did a stardust reaction and started tagging double toasted again because I know you guys will do a reaction video on this and I hope I get to represent my boy Predator. I won't hold my breath though cause I know there's gonna be a lot of other great reactions to some of the shit that happens in this movie.
I saw it this weekend. The theater room was almost empty. I have to say that the cast was spot on, the plot didn't make sense, this is one of those films in the same level of The Asylum in terms of nonsensical storyline. If it was not for the acting involved, I would have waited for it in Redbox or Netflix.
Part 1 is a war movie, 2 is a cop movie, "Predators" is underrated, AVP1 has the best human/predator team up, and the rest NEVER HAPPENED! (including this dumpster fire).

Alien vs Predator WAS a bad ass story. The novels and comics did SO WELL that it produced more series, games, etc. But they did not follow the novels that were responsible for Aliens and Predator coming back at the top of the charts. They did their own weird story and destroyed it. The original story gives you the predator culture, society, sexes, they show you the hierarchy. And it's in the future around the time Alien happened, on a random planet of farmers. Predator ends up adopting a middle aged woman as a step daughter and trains her to be a predator, then there's the drama of her and the asshole younger predators always insulting her and trying to humiliate her in a culture where she'd rather die than be humiliated. There's space Marines, a third alien species who's called the most dangerous and intelligent, then there's the inner drama between the colonial Marines, and turns from horror to action to drama back to deep storylines. The screwed up part is the script, designs, and plot was ALREADY written.
In the movie Predators that wasn't their home world. It was just a game reserve planet they used to hunt on.

For this to be a satire it had to be a clear comedy to make any distinction from normal action movies at that time. Do you see comedy anywhere in its description? The Last Action Hero was a satire of the 80's. This wasn't by any stretch. Unless you think every 80's action flick is a satire.

Edit JUST Saw it Originally I thought I was gonna Moan and groan through the new Predator movie but i thought it was Awesome!! It didn’t take itself too seriously and was pretty much an Action Comedy movie, the characters were surprisingly really likable. I was Cracking up HARD intentionally. Predators was a sequel to Predator. They mention Arnold's character from the first movie.
Predators does feel more like a sequel to the first film, but it's still considered a sequel to both Predator & Predator 2. Both sequels (Predator 2 & Predators) mention either Arnold's character or "The Mission" that he & his team were on in the first one. Gary Busey's character in the second film is directly connected to Arnold's character from the first one as it's vaguely mentioned that he was the one who set up "The Mission" & sent Arnold & his team in.
For what it is and what Shane Black does I did in fact have a fun time. I never really expected the magic of the first one or the brutish nature of the second one so I was just seeing what Black would do. Low and behold Black created something I can wholeheartedly say I enjoyed and had a great time with it

Arnie was the king of a good chunk of action films throughout the 80s up to the early 90s with T2, everything went down the drain with Eraser, Jingle all the Way and Batman abd Robin. I agree that the film should have worked if a larger than life actor like Arnie played the survivor that fought the preds. Sadly the muscle bound hero trope is dead in this age, it would be labeled as "toxic masculinity". I am surprised Dwayne Johnson was not approached to play the part.

it had plenty, but it wasn't a terrible and goofy movie like this. people's standards are so low nowadays. the first movie wasn't even about the predator. they changed the creature halfway through production from a guy in a praying mantis suit. and therein lies the problem. a good concept movie that was simple and effective milked into a bad franchise where dweebs who can't write for shit pump out bad sequels that dive so deep into the lore that they completely ruin or disregard the lore, and general logic. as if there is a point to the predators saving humans (lol) or mutating the be the hulk. dumb movie for people satisfied with anything that has moving pictures on screen.

The "loonies" are what made the movie good and gave u feeling of nostalgia for the first film. The developed the characters and made u care about all of them. In the first film u could feel the brotherhood between all the characters so it sucked when each died. Except for the fist death (the least developed loon) every death really sucked. It's my second favorite move in the franchise

I mostly agree with korey's review. Characters are likable, good dialogue, decent action and some funny moments and yes, I also agree the biggest issue with this movie is the writing.
My biggest gripe with this film is everything is just too convenient. Beyond just the motorcycles that were mentioned in the review there were certain characters that knew how to use weapons without any mention of training or a previous history with weapons and knew how to pick locks because they needed to get out of a lock. The kid who knows how to read alien languages, that was also mentioned in the review who dropped his autism after it stopped being necessary or how toward the end of the film a certain something happened that didn't actually happen because they wanted to set up a sequel.
There are still plenty of things to enjoy in this movie, if I really wanted knit pick I'd mention how bad some of the CG gore effects look but I'm only pointing this out because there is so much gore. The movie follow a formula, again as stated in the review but if you've been on a rollercoaster once before, it doesn't get boring just because you know what turns it's gonna take. Rental.
This sounds like it’s gonna be a fun time! Nothing will top the first original film with Arnold, but The Predator - from the sound of this review - looks as if it’ll fit into that between Predator and Predators with its tone.

Predator 2 is very underrated unlike Predators where its filled with errors like the girl talking about Arnie's team and how they killed it but yet no one decides to do the same thing until the very end with Brody....makes no sense. At least Danny Glover beats the shit out of it instead of using traps. You have more than one Predator and yet they die quick unlike the first & second movie. That's like if I had more than one Jason in Friday the 13th but somehow its much easier to defeat them. Plus Brody trying to sound like Bail's Batman is silly. Maybe I'll change my mind if the Predator 2018 is way worse because of the comedy I keep hearing about.
I agree about Glover's character from the 2nd movie, as Harrigan was ballsy enough to kick a Predator's ass on his own turf (the inside of the spaceship) and lived to tell the tale, and even got the old flintlock pistol as a trophy out of ordeal.

When Predators threw out the single, otherwise insignificant line, that excluded Predator 2 from the canon, I immediately lost a little enthusiasm and every flaw, from then on out, stood out like a sore thumb. On the second watch, I couldn't even finish it. Ironic that it dismisses the way better second movie while never once achieving any of its awesome momentum.

This review made me think of how I would have ended this movie. I loved it, but I didnt care much for the Predator suit. Picture this:
McKenna and his colleagues look on to this capsule, which the Fugitive calls the "Only super weapon capable of defeating Predators". Keyes opens the capsule, which opens slowly, with fog misting out of the inside.
Keyes looks inside curiously, taking notes on a notepad, until suddenly, a face hugger leaps out and wraps around his face, locking its tail tightly around his neck. He abruptly falls over, McKenna and the others look at eachother in confusion, and medics try despirately to remove the creature.
Cut to black. Credits roll.
Did i miss corey's rating? I saw Martin's was matinee, but what was Corey's?
I want to see a gritty predator movie set in the Middle East, taking down realistic soldiers. I can just imagine the predator blending in with the heat rising from the desert.

Arnold was supposed to appear at the end of the game Planet predators in 2010 but due to timing schedule he couldn't do it but this is a direct sequel to that movie for sure and of course the original.
Just got back from seeing it and I was reasonably excited for this one due to Shane Black directing and co-writing the script. Discounting the AVP movies, the Predator series has been solid on the whole with one masterpiece (Predator), an underrated sequel (Predator 2) and a decent third entry that expanded the lore (Predators).
Now having said all that, my fucking God was The Predator a mess.
There are times where Black's wicked sense of humor shines through (Ex. The Shotgun scene) and a few good action bits, but overall it's a muddled and incoherent misfire. I've been reading articles stating that this movie was subjected to a ton of reshoots with large alterations to the third act and it really shows in the final product.
The editing is choppy beyond belief, the dialogue is cringe-inducing (Ex. You beautiful motherfucker), most of the characters are either wasted (Ex. Jake Busey) or painfully under-developed, the tone is jarringly un-even, certain plot elements make no sense at all and the action fails to excite for the most part.
And don't get me started on that half-assed stinger at the end.

I saw it this weekend. The theater room was almost empty. I have to say that the cast was spot on, the plot didn't make sense, this is one of those films in the same level of The Asylum in terms of nonsensical storyline. If it was not for the acting involved, I would have waited for it in Redbox or Netflix.
Part 1 is a war movie, 2 is a cop movie, "Predators" is underrated, AVP1 has the best human/predator team up, and the rest NEVER HAPPENED! (including this dumpster fire).

Alien vs Predator WAS a bad ass story. The novels and comics did SO WELL that it produced more series, games, etc. But they did not follow the novels that were responsible for Aliens and Predator coming back at the top of the charts. They did their own weird story and destroyed it. The original story gives you the predator culture, society, sexes, they show you the hierarchy. And it's in the future around the time Alien happened, on a random planet of farmers.
Predator ends up adopting a middle aged woman as a step daughter and trains her to be a predator, then there's the drama of her and the asshole younger predators always insulting her and trying to humiliate her in a culture where she'd rather die than be humiliated. There's space Marines, a third alien species who's called the most dangerous and intelligent, then there's the inner drama between the colonial Marines, and turns from horror to action to drama back to deep storylines. The screwed up part is the script, designs, and plot was ALREADY written.
