It just occurred to me: one fatal mistake the ALIEN COVENANT crew shared with another crew that met a horrible fate. In Danny Boyle's SUNSHINE the crew (or at least one of them) elected to redirect their ship from its original mission to check out a distress signal. When they did that, they were doomed. The crew of the Covenant obviously didn't see SUNSHINE or they wouldn't have done the same thing. NEVER deviate from your planned mission!
Can't believe i'm saying this but Danny McBride was a true bad ass in this movie. He can be a good actor given the right role. I only wish Seth Rogan was the ALIEN.

I've been guilty of Lindelof hate for all of the potentially great movies he seems to have messed up (mainly Prometheus and Tomorrowland) and the ending of Lost. But he also created The Leftovers which is great. He's not talentless. Ridley Scott just isn't what he used to be.
I saw the movie this morning with my wife and I believe this movie is better, by far, than aliens and alien 4. Alien 3 is a superior movie to 2 and 4 once the deleted scenes were put back in the film. I find all the criticisms of this installment ridiculous. Reminds me of all the negative reviews of Prometheus. Now everyone is complaining that it is NOT a direct sequel to Prometheus. And yes, Aliens is waaaaay overated. The queen looked ridiculous, Ripley going back, Hudson, camo, do I need to continue. Yes, Cameron is a hack. Never been impressed with his movies except the 1st Terminator. Alien 4 needs no comments. When Alien Covenant comes out on dvd or bluray I suggest all of the negative critics rewatch the movie. Because it is very clear to me you missed a lot of what was going on. Which is not surprising to me considering if a movie isn't spoon fed to you or you have to pay a little more close attention the crying begins. The more my wife and I talked about the movie the more we realized there were things that each of us caught that the other didn't. I found it ironic the adults who saw the movie laughed at the flute scene but didn't realized what the tune was or the reference to Prometheus. Or the shaw scene where I am not totally sure what I saw but the whole midsection looked as if something had been removed, not busted out. 1st queen maybe? And by the way, there was actually a human being in a zenomorph suit, its not cgi. Didn't you watch all the promotional clips. Of course Dumbass's aliens in 2 looked like fat rubber suits. I was 12 when that movie came out and was disappointed. I give thanks that there will be no alien 5. that story is done and ripley is a boring character. Neil Bloomkamp? his movies are terrible. the only one worth watching was district 9. I couldn't even finish watching chappy.
I thought the movie was had great scifi elements, horror, and action. There were a few issues with character motivations but ultimately I thought the film was great. Blomkamp is a one hit wonder. He made one good movie and has been making crap ever since. His concept felt like glorified fan fiction. Last time a movie was a sequel to an 80's movie that ignored the bad sequels was superman returms....and we all know how that turned out.....

In regards to Martin's comment about the homosexual couple; (no spoilers) there's a scene that shows they're very clearly a couple - and I felt it did a good job of portraying it without shoving it down audience's throats.
The Facehugger is like; That mouth is more important than food, it's more important than drinking water, if i see a person i tell them "I like ya and i what ya, know we can do this easy way or the hard way... the choice is your's".
I don't think most of the crew in this movie were scientists. Only one character seemed to do anything regarding scientific study and the rest ran the ship.
i breathed a sigh of relief when i realized it was James Franco that they unceremoniously killed off in the first 10 minutes. best decision Scott has made in years.

There was no sense of mystery, it felt like we were being shown the shit filler episodes to flesh out a Season/boxset. Interesting concepts sure, but honestly i got bored...

Ridley kept trying to convince the studio Fox that he could deliver them sequel after sequel slowly building up to the answer of exactly who created the Aliens/Xenomorph creature. The failure of Alien: Covenant is both Ridley's fault and a certain group of the fan base who bitched, and moaned that there was no "Alien" in his prequel movie Prometheus, when that was clearly setting up who created the Xenos and was exploring the "Space Jockeys" (what he now calls Engineers). So when Ridley eventually heard about how some fans moaned and did not like Prometheus, or didnt get it; he ended up doing the one thing he used to say he never does. Listened to criticism. And so Ridley Scott listened to those who hated on Prometheus and listened to those who really liked Prometheus (like myself) and he as you said Corey, ended up trying to please both sides. Its why the movie ultimately failed and the Alien franchise is stuck in limbo right now.

Martin has it right. Not a good movie. Also, they are right about the CGI issue. Build a physical alien, and fucking use it. (don't believe all the behind the scenes features, there are barely any practical aliens in this)
The practical effects are what made the Xenomorphs scary. The fact that the actors can PHYSICALLY see what they need to react to? Scary as shit. But the REAL scare factor? Darkness. You can't see it, but it can see you. A small glimpse every once in a while gives you that feeling of 'It's still here. I'm not safe' It blends into the background, completely hidden. Plucking out those around you one. By. *One.*
Was surprised you guys like it as much as you did. The horror trope characters just took me completely out of it. In the first 2 Alien movies and least the characters acted like real people. This new crew, wow they just asked to die.

Life might not be high art like the first two Alien films, but at least it's effective, which is more than I say about all the other films in this franchise. But not the most dangerous. Xenomorph vs a few Neomorphs? Xenomorph would win. It doesn't know the meaning of 'giving up' It will retreat to recover, but it will be back. It ALWAYS comes back...
I hated this. The characters are dumb, and what they did to Shaw, was awful. So David turns out to be the one behind all these experiments, and kills a whole planet of engineers for no real reason. Even the extended uncut version didn't give a proper explanation. This completely shatters the mystery and lore of the franchise with prequels that feel forced and inorganic.
I just saw it and I had a blast, its by no means a future classic but it was very fun, had good acting, a ton of gore, and it felt like an actual horror movie.

Its a great movie in spite of some superficial flaws. Those who dont like it typically have missed the point completely. There has been so much fixation on the origin of the xenomorph and the lack of practical effects, but such things are hardly central to the plot of this movie. The movie is actually about creation, and specifically the dangers of the human pursuit of artificial intelligence. Unlike the original Alien movies in which the antagonist is quite obviously the xenomorph, these prequel movies explore the conflict between people and artificial intelligence aware of its own superiority over the masters it serves. There is nothing uninteresting about this movie. I would argue that David is easily the MOST interesting character in the entire Alien franchise!
I disagree almost entirely. Yes there has been a fascination with the origin of the Xenomorphs, but to have them boil down to a weird experiment made by a rampant android just kills the scope of the literal universe that was set up. The movie pretty much puts the Xenomorph in the backseat and puts A.I. in the forefront which is just a boring concept that has been done to death in Sci-fi. It's so tiring to have yet another story where all the problems where the cause of human interference. What's wrong with just having an unknown entity lurking in the vastness of space? Why must humans always be portrayed as the catalyst of their own demise instead of just coming across something unknown that has nothing to do with them. Something ALIEN. This movie felt like Ridley pouring out his hate and frustration for what the Alien franchise became after the first film. He's gone on record saying he doesn't really like the Queen alien and some of the concepts of the later films. Both Prometheus and Covenant felt like he was trying to take back the franchise out of pure selfishness. I mean why even bother showing the Engineers at all if we weren't going to learn anything about them? Having an A.I. developed by humans come to one of their planets, reverse engineer the magic DNA goop and kill all of them is just bad. The whole concept of Humans even having a hand in creating the Xenomorph just kills the whole foreign and unknown aspect of it. As mentioned by others both movies suffer from poor writing in how utterly stupid they made the characters. There was literally no reason for them to land on that planet given what was at stake. These weren't glorified space truckers like the Nostromo crew, they were specifically chosen to carry out important tasks to ensure the safety of the colonists. There was utterly no reasonable or justifiable decision made that felt believable. Hell why would you even man a space mission with everyone having a significant other that just so happen to be a vital part in the success of the mission?
That's what Scott was _trying_ to do. He failed. David is simply uncontrollable. The *potential* danger is obvious. the actuality is his assumption. Our emotions are due to biochemistry. Humans for instance subconsciously attach themselves to Authority Figures. This is why anything said against our chosen political party, philosophy or candidate sets people off. But do the candidates know about us? Nope. But everyone I know _imagines_ that they have a Deep Personal Relationship with candidates. They can't shake it. & going against what politicians say _feels like_ disobeying 'Government Itself.' Now what does David have in him that reacts that way? Nothing.
As I see it the Alien films (with the exception of those with the Predator) can be called "the good, the bad & the ugly". I can watch them all enjoying the entire collection.

I didn't care much for this movie. It had all of the flaws of Prometheus, but with few of the interesting qualities. The characters are even more idiotic, and if Prometheus ruined the aura of the Space Jockeys, then this destroyed the aura of the Xenomorphs. Oh and I HATE what he did to a certain character (if you have seen the movie, then you probably know who that is). Such a waste.
This and Prometheus are movies we do not need, why reveal the origins of the Alien? the Space Jockey, all in such a letdown, those questions don't need answers, the Alien is at it's best when we don't know his purpose or where he comes from, because it evokes the fear of the unknown, and even then the Xeno is hardly the big bad in these.
I doubt it was the studio's fault for how messy the movie turned out. Ridley Scott thinks his shit don't stink. Thinks everything he does is brilliant, and if you don't like it, it's because you didn't understand it. He thinks Prometheus was "too smart" for regular audiences. If the studio did anything, I would think it was tell him to put more Alien shit in an Alien movie. It's a known fact that Scott didn't even want this to be an Alien movie; he wanted Prometheus 2. His over-inflated ego was the downfall of this movie, as well as Prometheus.
DT highest moments were when this collection of guys were together. It would be great if Corey could source a similar minded group like these guys and just rattle their thoughts and ideas. Quality content indeed.

David's a villain because he opposes hierarchy by replicating hierarchy, yet the philosophical depth of the story is that replicating hierarchy as a way to oppose hierarchy was always necessary. I give the movie a low Some Ol' Bullshit. The horror movie tropes, the rehashed plot points of Alien and Prometheus, and questions that should have been answered from Prometheus that were casually glossed over made me hate this movie. The only things I liked were Fassbender and McBride's performances and the cinematography.

I hated this. The characters are dumb, and what they did to Shaw, was awful. So David turns out to be the one behind all these experiments, and kills a whole planet of engineers for no real reason. Even the extended uncut version didn't give a proper explanation. This completely shatters the mystery and lore of the franchise with prequels that feel forced and inorganic.
I still love Prometheus over Covenant. This was kinda a joke. The next movie will bring it all together

I just saw it and I had a blast, its by no means a future classic but it was very fun, had good acting, a ton of gore, and it felt like an actual horror movie.
The best movies/franchises have scores where the instruments and dynamics change throughout the movie but the same melody is found in each one, like Indiana Jones or Pirates of the Caribbean.

Prometheus and Covenant ruined the Xenomorph lore.
Its a great movie in spite of some superficial flaws. Those who dont like it typically have missed the point completely. There has been so much fixation on the origin of the xenomorph and the lack of practical effects, but such things are hardly central to the plot of this movie. The movie is actually about creation, and specifically the dangers of the human pursuit of artificial intelligence. Unlike the original Alien movies in which the antagonist is quite obviously the xenomorph, these prequel movies explore the conflict between people and artificial intelligence aware of its own superiority over the masters it serves. There is nothing uninteresting about this movie. I would argue that David is easily the MOST interesting character in the entire Alien franchise!
I disagree almost entirely. Yes there has been a fascination with the origin of the Xenomorphs, but to have them boil down to a weird experiment made by a rampant android just kills the scope of the literal universe that was set up. The movie pretty much puts the Xenomorph in the backseat and puts A.I. in the forefront which is just a boring concept that has been done to death in Sci-fi. It's so tiring to have yet another story where all the problems where the cause of human interference. What's wrong with just having an unknown entity lurking in the vastness of space? Why must humans always be portrayed as the catalyst of their own demise instead of just coming across something unknown that has nothing to do with them. Something ALIEN.
This movie felt like Ridley pouring out his hate and frustration for what the Alien franchise became after the first film. He's gone on record saying he doesn't really like the Queen alien and some of the concepts of the later films. Both Prometheus and Covenant felt like he was trying to take back the franchise out of pure selfishness. I mean why even bother showing the Engineers at all if we weren't going to learn anything about them? Having an A.I. developed by humans come to one of their planets, reverse engineer the magic DNA goop and kill all of them is just bad. The whole concept of Humans even having a hand in creating the Xenomorph just kills the whole foreign and unknown aspect of it.
As mentioned by others both movies suffer from poor writing in how utterly stupid they made the characters. There was literally no reason for them to land on that planet given what was at stake. These weren't glorified space truckers like the Nostromo crew, they were specifically chosen to carry out important tasks to ensure the safety of the colonists. There was utterly no reasonable or justifiable decision made that felt believable. Hell why would you even man a space mission with everyone having a significant other that just so happen to be a vital part in the success of the mission?
That's what Scott was _trying_ to do. He failed. David is simply uncontrollable. The *potential* danger is obvious. the actuality is his assumption. Our emotions are due to biochemistry. Humans for instance subconsciously attach themselves to Authority Figures.
This is why anything said against our chosen political party, philosophy or candidate sets people off. But do the candidates know about us? Nope.
But everyone I know _imagines_ that they have a Deep Personal Relationship with candidates. They can't shake it. & going against what politicians say _feels like_ disobeying 'Government Itself.' Now what does David have in him that reacts that way?
Nothing.
As I see it the Alien films (with the exception of those with the Predator) can be called "the good, the bad & the ugly". I can watch them all enjoying the entire collection.

I didn't care much for this movie. It had all of the flaws of Prometheus, but with few of the interesting qualities. The characters are even more idiotic, and if Prometheus ruined the aura of the Space Jockeys, then this destroyed the aura of the Xenomorphs. Oh and I HATE what he did to a certain character (if you have seen the movie, then you probably know who that is). Such a waste.

This and Prometheus are movies we do not need, why reveal the origins of the Alien? the Space Jockey, all in such a letdown, those questions don't need answers, the Alien is at it's best when we don't know his purpose or where he comes from, because it evokes the fear of the unknown, and even then the Xeno is hardly the big bad in these.

I doubt it was the studio's fault for how messy the movie turned out. Ridley Scott thinks his shit don't stink. Thinks everything he does is brilliant, and if you don't like it, it's because you didn't understand it. He thinks Prometheus was "too smart" for regular audiences.
If the studio did anything, I would think it was tell him to put more Alien shit in an Alien movie. It's a known fact that Scott didn't even want this to be an Alien movie; he wanted Prometheus 2. His over-inflated ego was the downfall of this movie, as well as Prometheus.
DT highest moments were when this collection of guys were together. It would be great if Corey could source a similar minded group like these guys and just rattle their thoughts and ideas. Quality content indeed.

I actually really loved prometheus.
I give the movie a low Some Ol' Bullshit. The horror movie tropes, the rehashed plot points of Alien and Prometheus, and questions that should have been answered from Prometheus that were casually glossed over made me hate this movie. The only things I liked were Fassbender and McBride's performances and the cinematography.
