Himmler definitely has an eastern Slavic look. Large numbers of people who identify as German have Slavic ancestry. I'm talking about before WWII. A lot more Slavic blood came into Germany after the war. It's estimated a couple of hundred thousand children were born to German women and Soviet soldiers in the postwar era. Most of the fathers were of Slavic origin, many were central Asian or even far east Asian origin. I once met a German woman who looked east Asian. My initial impression was that she was Korean or Japanese. She told me both her parents were German. I saw a picture of her father who looked east Asian. After talking to her a bit more I discovered that her father was born in 1946, in the Soviet occupation zone. I didn't ask her anything else about it.

Would be interested to know what happened to his older brother during ww2. If he was already an officer in ww1, with a brother like himmler within the government later, he must also had a long career within 3rd reich…? It was very interesting, thx for all details 👍
According to wiki (I know, a dangerous way to start a sentence)... he mostly ended up a mid-level bureaucrat for the NS party in fields such as education and engineering. Was arrested in 1946 (since he did have party and SS membership), but wasn’t held for long as apparently there wasn’t much evidence he was personally involved in anything particularly heinous. He lived into his 80’s.
He was mostly appointment to cushy jobs overseeing schools and technology departments. He did serve in Czechoslovakia and was involved in the invasion of Poland though. At the end of the war, he was in the Waffen SS and inspected their schools. After the war, he was released from captivity in 1948, worked as a director and engineer for the European-Afghan Cultural Office in Munich, and died in 1982.
Anyone with half a brain avoids going to war with conscripts. It’s the same reason given for Americans who joined the paratroopers, if your going to fight, fight alongside the best.
Anyone with half a brain avoids going to war. (as soon as I attempt to qualify this statement, a whole host of arguments erupt, so it can stand alone).
@Jermaine Johnson During WW2, submarine crew members had the highest causality rate - one out of four never came back from patrol. The next highest group were crews who served aboard bombers. Not sure about the combat arms (Infantry, Armor, & Artillery) of the Army, but you could be right - the airborne force just might have had the highest causality rate.
@@SST11B if I wanted to fight with the best, I definitely wouldn’t join the US military. Did you know that US special forces cross train with our general infantry, since that’s the standard of our standard forces. US grunts get such limited scope in their training - trained for their role and nothing more. In our military each infantry men receives complete training on every other role in their unit - the idea being if someone becomes combat ineffective, anyone else can step up and perform their role. Drivers are trained as gunners, infantry men train as engineers etc etc. The US military strategy is ‘quantity over quality’.
Himmler wanted prestige and advancement, not combat. Hitler wanted and got both. Goering already had prestige, wanted more, and was capable enough to make combat his vehicle to that end.
@@submarineUK non of them are failures at least when they were doing their work at that point of their lives( ww2). Neets and creepy outcasts, failed professions they had. They were lucky racist, spiteful outcasts took over Germany.
No, he was the german Colonel Sanders. The name SS doesn't mean Schutzstaffel, it stands for Sanders and Starbucks, he owned the fast food restaurant often visited by the young vegan liberal art student Hitler who really liked his chicken flavored and shaped fries he called 'Goering wings'.
this is interesting. I was wondering why Himmler would be 'taken seriously' by Hitler. but he did see combat, fenced at his university and had quite a personality
He was a real human being. A very evil one we know. But look at this psychological insight: No WWI combat experience. The rest of his life trying to prove himself.
In the end even the top Nazis were only human. I think it's very important that this is acknowledged, because it prevents them from being seen as these mythical, almost supernatural monsters, who should be feared. No, despite their extraordinarily evil actions and policies, many of the men were quite ordinary.
Keep 'em coming Mark, as I always say but may I make a special request? Could you do a video on the flying career of Rudolf Hess? You have a photo of him at 0:47 in front of a Fokker Triplane but every account of him I have ever read only ever mentions him flying the Fokker D7. I've never seen any photo of him and a Triplane before. Keep 'em coming!
Hess barely made it out of flight training when the war ended, I don't believe he ever flew any combat missions. Triplanes had been withdrawn from front-line combat by the time Hess started training but they were still being used as home defense aircraft and for fighter training.
@@paulmurphy42 I think it's almost a certainty he flew the Triplane. And I believe he had completed the training but the war ended before he was assigned to a combat unit. Hess was a late comer to aviation, he'd spent most of the war in the infantry.
Yes, having served in combat in the Great War provided what we would call "street cred" today, to anyone who aspired to leadership in the nationalist organizations in Germany. Goebbels passed himself off as a wounded war vet, in the early 20s, as he participated in the protests and resistance to the French occupation of the Rheinland.
I enjoy your style Sir….you tell the history as it was and leave out personal biases. Exactly how history should be taught leaving the learner to judge on his/her own.
He was a true soldier. Militaries have more than combat arms. He should've been proud of his military service if he thought Germany was on the right side of WW1. But he had a romanticized vision of combat and wished he could've seen it. Considering how he acted in training, complaining about the food and quarters, he probably would've gotten disillusioned if he went to the front. And he would've been a terrible officer if he had to lead troops in combat.
@@RsRj-qd2cg back then a lot more of the troops entered the meat grinder because of the man power shortages near the end of the war, so for Himmler to have never entered combat was actually quite rare. If he had been an enlisted man he would have been through basic training in a matter of weeks and then rushed to the front, the only reason he never saw combat was because of the extensive officer training and his relatively late entrance into the service (due to his young age).
Mark is great and trustworthy, I have been doing a lot of researches about this era, and I guarantee you that he is saying the truth, love your work man, keep it up!

@@pilsudski36 i think himmlers issue was he had his goals set too high to start. i dont think he was a coward because when he finally got the position he wanted, he was expecting and anticipating to go to war. its a good thing to aspire to be a military officer, however i think it would of been a better decision had he just taken the first opportunity he got and enlisted as a standard private. had he survived the remainder of the war he would of got the combat experience, could of had a much better possibility of being awarded an iron cross for his service, could of potentially climbed the ranks, and wouldnt have been stuck in the soon to be disbanded post war reserve unit due to having said combat experience thus being picked for the defensive military.
@@trolltalwar he was a bitchmade coward who wanted to send other people to die instead of himself. Him fleeing his school in terror of being enlisted by conscription shows his true courage.
The depth of information in Dr Felton's videos often have me thinking "how does he find all of this stuff out?". The videos are endlessly interesting. Many thanks!
This God forsaken war should NEVER be forgotten. Thank you Professor Felton for these documentaries!
Ironically without this war then the ensuing cold war would presumably have been far warmer.

Thank you Mr. Felton, wonderful content once again.
"wonderful"???
This channel is awesome. 👍
Would be interested to know what happened to his older brother during ww2.
If he was already an officer in ww1, with a brother like himmler within the government later, he must also had a long career within 3rd reich…?
It was very interesting, thx for all details 👍
he was the director of the reich ministry of science education and culture
appendix he was appointed in 1940 he was briefly called up in 1939 in the 19th Bavarian infantry
@Dirk Britten she married an Israeli? That is mighty strange

Anyone with half a brain avoids going to war with conscripts. It’s the same reason given for Americans who joined the paratroopers, if your going to fight, fight alongside the best.
He's known for his taint of bias.
Anyone with half a brain avoids going to war. (as soon as I attempt to qualify this statement, a whole host of arguments erupt, so it can stand alone).
"Eagles may soar, but weasels don't get sucked into jet engines."

Himmler wasn't a first-class physically specimen I suspect he was kept back because of this.
Good point but I thought Germany conscripted pensioners by the end of the war
Sounds like he wanted to be in it, but not actually have to do the dirty work.
Himmler wanted prestige and advancement, not combat. Hitler wanted and got both. Goering already had prestige, wanted more, and was capable enough to make combat his vehicle to that end.

@@wayneantoniazzi2706 So you think he did fly the Fokker Triplane then? And he did just about complete his training?
@@paulmurphy42 I think it's almost a certainty he flew the Triplane. And I believe he had completed the training but the war ended before he was assigned to a combat unit. Hess was a late comer to aviation, he'd spent most of the war in the infantry.
@@wayneantoniazzi2706 Excellent answer, thanks.
@@paulmurphy42 You're welcome! And as I'm sure you know Hess never lost his interest in flying, taking it up as a hobby when he could afford to do so.
Thank you, again, great story...

Can we start a petition for Dr. Felton to take over the history channel? It seems long overdue...
The closest he ever became to being a true Soldier was in WW1.
@@RsRj-qd2cg Damn thank god I didn't make himmler a field marshal in hoi4
@@RsRj-qd2cg back then a lot more of the troops entered the meat grinder because of the man power shortages near the end of the war, so for Himmler to have never entered combat was actually quite rare. If he had been an enlisted man he would have been through basic training in a matter of weeks and then rushed to the front, the only reason he never saw combat was because of the extensive officer training and his relatively late entrance into the service (due to his young age).
He was a true soldier
He served a year on active duty as an officer during the first war. That seems like a real soldier.
