However serious the allegations could have been, the simple, easy way to regain favor in that Senate hearing would have been to acknowledge the charge, publicly apologize to the victim, and demonstrate how he would rule on further cases like this as a defense of women's bodily autonomy. But to deny, and lie about it ever happening is not something you want to hear and hear from a court judge with the power to rule over women's health and bodily freedoms. We demand transparency of our officials, to know that the person passing legislation or judgement is doing so from a place outside of personal interest and self preservation. I think it's a tricky problem. On the one hand, the more leeway reporters have to inject interpretations and opinions, the more potential there is for that to become manipulative and an abuse of their position. I think it's a tricky problem. On the one hand, the more leeway reporters have to inject interpretations and opinions, the more potential there is for that to become manipulative and an abuse of their position. On the other hand, whether they make clear statements of opinion or not, they are constantly, unavoidably making statements with every editorial decision, every choice of which stories to air and which to skip, etc. This is true even if the journalists in question make a concerted effort to avoid bias - and in fact that kind of effort can and does backfire. When dealing with extremists a "fair" approach could be to present the facts and convey the events as they happened, but doing so can also lend exposure, or even an air of legitimacy to the worst segments of society.
It's awful in the States! They have no "REAL" news channel. If you want that, you have to watch Al Jazeera, BBC, or the like. It's so annoying, but speaks to the society. They want entertainment above all else.
