I tried something a bit different for the translation of this video. When the Imam was responding to me, you can hear the first part of his response in his own voice, but then you can continue to see him but I overlay Kate's translation overtop of his image. I'm not really sure how I feel about the final result. It cut a good 20 minutes off of the video compared to listening to his whole response in Uyghur and then hearing the translation afterwards, but let me know how you feel about it and I'll have a better idea on what to do next time.

I am ok with your approach on this video. But I may be bias because I live in China and still to this day hate when I hear a translator speaking over a Chinese speaker. I tend to get caught up listening to both languages and I end up missing a lot of points.

    • @itsaboutchina732

You may want to do a story on the number of Xinjiang BBQ places there are throughout China. I think in my town it has been beneficial for local Chinese to get to know Uyghur people and also eat some great food.

    • @TheBullethead1988
      @TheBullethead1988 3 ปีที่แล้ว +86

Personally I would include his voice and have English/Chinese subtitle overlay. People can potentially mis-translate what he was saying and if you have viewers who can speak the Uyghur language then they can comment on what was actually said. That way people won't say you are hiding anything by masking out his voice.

    • @dionydonny

it works great, although the voice sounds a little weird with the image.🤣🤣

I honestly think that letting the audio go and put subtitles is much better, and then you don't need to add the translators audio.

The MSM don't need to interview any Uyghurs in Xinjiang. They just talk to the China expert Zenz who has never been to the area. And include some random footage of barbed wire, security camera, a guard blocking filming and some sinister music. Job done for the BBC.

If only the western medias also pick up the infrastructural growth and the quality of life improvements. They miss the point that how far china has come and other factors like population and even the militarization of the South China Sea. When you look at it exclusively, yes china looks like the aggressor. But as a whole picture it's just a defensive tactic to repel the military web the US has set up.

      2) Vietnam occupies about 51 outposts across 27 features, by contrast China, a much bigger and stronger country, only has 20 outposts in the Paracel Islands.
      3) In the Spratly, China controls 8 maritime features, while the Philippines occupied 9, Malaysia occupy 5. Taiwan controls 1outpost

I read your GuanCha interview. It is really a difficult balancing act to try to give a balanced opinion on subjects that the other part will tear apart, deform and weaponize no matter what you say. The Soviets gave up after a while when they realized that nothing they could say or do would ever be interpreted in a positive way by the western media empire. We had these discussions in Chile under Allende in 1970-73. It's not just a question of getting "better" or more "professional" public relations people involved, because the whole philosophy of western propaganda/advertising is inherently cynical, it is designed to get people to believe in things that go against their own interests without even noticing. I'm sure that's not what you - or China - want to do. You simply want people in the west to see "the other side" as it is. What works best for me, as I'm trying to understand China better, are glimpses of real people in real daily life situations. You have been doing a great job on that.

Things are comlex, China has its own problem too, but in general, Chinese are working hard to improve their life, and goverment does the right thing(most of the time). And the result is that we will require more food, meat, oil, iron, etc. Which is absolutely a nightmare for the rich and selfish developed countries. Because people dont share your experience will jump to a conclution and call you shill. It also shows how bad the chinese government is at understanding the nuances of western MSM and audiences. Daniel obviously went to xinjiang to debunk the so called genocide accusation. China now is literally nazi german according to some english speaking netizens, but ccp didnt get the severity of it and be thinking, oh a foreighner is here, let's first show off some things we did, instead of clearing our names. Pepe roni, The thing about Iraq is the liberal media at the time was sceptical about the WMD claims. A lot of people were. There were record breaking protests leading up to the war to decry the warmongering. So when the same media now pushes lies about China, they have an air of credibility.
I have my theories about why it's different for China. One, as a longtime adversary of the West, the propaganda against China is much more established and entrenched. So much so that it's baked into the fabric of society.
Two, the US gov learned something from Iraq and this time ensured that their propaganda efforts were more comprehensive.
(Edit: I have to add it's not just Iraq. People came out massively against the Vietnam War. The Western world had a vibrant antiwar movement. I say "had" because it's dead in the water in the 2020s).
At the end of the day, we have to keep countering these lies. Having a defeatist attitude that it's a waste of time only hurts ourselves.

Daniel is one of the very few Internet personalities who talk about China with true compassion and absolutely without malice. I think it would be great to hear him talk about the issues he has observed and his thoughts on what remedial steps might be taken. No government is perfect. A good government is one that can graciously listen to constructive criticism and take actions accordingly. In addition to his great efforts in rebuffing lies from western media, his objective, insightful and analytical views of the not-so-good, the bad and even the ugly would be exceedingly useful. His articulateness and his very tactful language, in addition to his genuine passion for the Chinese society would make him the ideal candidate to provide such inputs to the authorities concerned, so that appropriate improvements and corrections can be implemented.

Daniel, 2:40 about the water situation for a small village. You should really go into deeper for that story. The way I heard it was that the Chinese government instructed the local officials to improve the lives of the old village which consisted of dilapidated houses, poor roads, no source of clean water, poor sanitation. So the Chinese government built a new village with well constructed houses and land for growing food, etc. But once the villagers moved into the new settlement, they discovered that they have to go 30 odd miles just to get water. Apparently the local officials either through incompetence or corruption didn’t consider installing a water system. So the villagers moved back to the old village since they figured that life isn’t better when you need to go so far to get water. When some villagers complained, and the Chinese government got hold of the news, a thorough investigation was made and the local officials were punished and the water system that you were referring to was installed.
So this goes with your quote on the Chinese government said cut the hair and the local authorities would cut the head..
The point to this is that when Chinese people complain, the government listens. Of course, the reality is that not everyone will be satisfied but at least the people are not ignored.
This also shows that there remains a lot of incompetence especially with the lower ranks of local governments. But it’s hard to blame them since they are the first generation to even own a car compared to North Americans now into fourth or fifth generation of automobile savvy.
Nobody is blind to the fact that China is still a developing country. They are still learning to call jakes jacks.

Well said! Also the "mentality" and exposure level of rural China especially in the poor provinces can be considered "pathetic" in comparison with the 1st world BUT such phenomenon is NOT exclusive to the rural China. It's ubiquitous in every developing nations, even within the urbanites (including countries that had developed for decades). Fortunately the Central government of China is relatively very effective in monitoring and correcting the local governments. With ever improving central government's mechanism and the spirit of the Chinese people, I'm convinced those "rural" mentalities WILL SOON catch up with the rest of the nation.

Great insight into the Xinjiang issue! As you allude at the beginning of the video, some local Chinese officials overreacted to the central government's orders to deal with the terrorist attacks a few years ago, causing some resentments from some Uyghur people. I heard the similar things too. When a series of terrorist's attacks happened in Beijing Tiananmen Square, Guangzhou and Kunming Train stations, and in Xinjiang, the Chinese government was caught off guard. China had never faced such large scale terrorist attacks before. The early government reaction was less than ideal, some officials took some simple and less balanced measures, such as limiting traveling in and out of Xinjiang. Some hotels outside Xinjiang didn't accept people from Xinjiang, not just Uyghurs, even Han ethnic people. The reason behind was that those terrorist attacks had been plotted in hotels and the local officials were reprimanded for not vigilant enough. Of course that hurt feeling of the ethnic minorities in Xinjiang. But that had nothing to do with "genocide" or "ethnic cleansing". As I know the government took measures to correct the mistakes and traveling in and out Xinjiang is free now. I personally traveled to Xinjiang in Sep of 2019, I saw a beautiful and peaceful place.

When I was a kid and once went to watch a movie, the cinema just beside the one we are in was bombed. And their were people died in that movie house. In my teenage years, there was one time at the middle of the nite a government office just near our house was non stop shot by Armalite for like 5min. My mom shouted us to get off the bed and hide below the bed afraid of any stray bullets. Even now in my 50's, our country still have not resolve these terrorism activities and it does affect everyone's safety and country's economy. It just a problems that cannot be easily resolved.
I used to live in Hong Kong for 30 years, it's really sad when the violent rioting happened in HK. I really couldn't understand why a great majority of people supported all these violence and believed they are so oppress when they have a safe and peaceful city to live and make a living. Of course HK is not perfect but definitely it's not freedom, since it's very free and safe city. It's like HK is back pedalling themselves instead of improving while other democratic countries are still trying to achieve a safe and peaceful society of their people.

But China is facing an uphill battle to steer the narrative in the West, but actions speak louder than words, and the participants in the BRI are seeing the impact and why most still support it (at least until the Quad or the Five Eyes support a 'regime change' in such countries.)

Thank you, Daniel Dumbrill! As a Chinese, I should express my respect to you. As you say, you are trying to find some true issues in order to make this place a better one.
I watched your Tiananmen VS HK Protest interview as well and I am amazed by that. I have been using VPN to get outside content for 5 or 6 years since my graduate from high school. I got really negative issues from western media and once I thought the gov did hide truths from us. But when I came to those western media's purpose, I was lost. Bcz they are not the guy that Hollywood describes as a super hero whose duty is just to help others, even the "others" are foreigners. These guys were making a living. Did they care about what really happened before and be willing to sacrifice their time and money to help a foreign country out? I think not. Even till now, Africa has the most need to be helped. BUT have the western world done something well for them? Then why African people are still in poor conditions?
"What would US do if someone camp outside the WH for three months?" They did work for votes, not work for people. Though China has many problems, as Daniel says, Beijing asks province to get a haircut but the province cut the head off. President Xi has made some good changes and will make more. Let's see what will be solved and what will happen.
As a Chinese, I am proud of and thanks to those people who gave their life or lifetime to make this place better. Many foregoers gave up so many things including their freedom and now we can live without hunger without fear. We can't simply take these as a matter of so-called "human rights", they are not easy.
In last two years, since the pandemic began, I should say western democracy is such a bullshit. If they can't protect people's lives, how could they ensure their human rights? There are so many deaths caused by DT's misleading info but he lives happily now. NO ONE was asked to be responsible for this, ridiculous.

Thanks for a great interview on a complex subject. I am American and have driving my car, alone, all through southern Xinjiang for the past 30 days. We must have overlapped in Kashgar (I was in Kashgar and Tashkorgan April 22 to May 1 2021). Saw fabulous scenery and met so many kind people but also had over 100 security stops, requiring police escorts for hours at a time and being followed for several days. It is daunting. The most difficult problem for me was dealing with the prohibition on foreigners buying gas for their car. Of course I needed to be by gas on multiple occasions and had to develop some strategies for do that it was very interesting. During my 30 days In Xinjiang I interacted with hundreds of people including Uyghur, Han Chinese, security, police and health care personnel. In all that time I did not hit one single person who was not very polite, very professional and very patient. Everyone had an honest desire to help me. It was a great experience. I just left Xinjiang today and I’m headed south now on the G 30 with my ultimate destination being Lijiang in Yunnan Province. Of course I have a lot of good pictures and a lot of good aerial drone footage and would more than happy to share it with you at any time if you so desire. I am looking forward to being a new subscriber and backtracking on all of your videos.

    • @DanielDumbrill

    • @fletcherbrown728
      @fletcherbrown728 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@DanielDumbrill I would park my vehicle outside the gas station and then ask people in line, waiting yo buy gas, if they would help me. Because my Chinese is marginal I would get my wife on the phone to have her help plead my case. I was more successful with people driving higher end cars like land rovers or Toyota Prados. Several times the person agreed to help me put the gas station gate guard would not open the gate even with their ID card because they just didn’t like the idea. The Chinese ID card must be swiped in a machine for the gate to open and then must be swiped again at the actual fuel pump. I eventually hit on a winning tactic. I would wait until there was a police checkpoint that was coal located with a gas station, or close to a gas station. After getting through all of the security checks I would then ask the security people (police) if they could help me get gas. In every case they bent over backwards to help me. In several cases they had me follow them to a gas station several miles away then got me into the gas station and use their own personal card at the gas pump. At every checkpoint they always asked me where I stayed the night before, the name of the hotel, and where I was going to stay that night and the name of the hotel. I don’t know how they will react to you wanting to park and sleep in your RV. They actually are very accommodating and willing to help you it just may take a little more discussion.

That guy never really talked to or interviewed any local people in the video, but made comments about people being not happy, praying not allowed in mosques, locals not allowed to fast during Ramadan..... Seemed weird to me, but many people would probably take his words at face value. I went on trips to Silk Road in 1998 and 2019, I witnessed the development and how people of all ethnic groups have improved, they were living normal lives, so these genocide accusations seem really far fetched. I also went to HK during the protest in 2019, when we came back to Canada, we couldn’t believe how biased the news here was, describing the protesters as peaceful. What happened in the past two years have showed me the reality that I wasn’t aware of, it’s a belated disillusionment, but better than staying ignorant forever.

No offense to Kate, she did a fairly good job. But it was quite difficult to listen to her struggle through translating, which made the ease of a listener getting through the interview quite difficult.
One thing that might work, again, no offense meant to Kate, would just be to allow us to hear the Imam's voice, cut Kate out, and apply subtitles.
That, or maybe you could record a voice-over yourself for Kate's translations and apply it on the video the way you did here.
You've got a radio smooth voice which is really one reason why it's easy to watch or listen to your videos. Very comfortable. Kate's discomfort, struggling with finding the right English words, also passes on to the listener, which kind of made me have to force myself to sit through it.
Unfortunately, that probably means people who are already have a bias, that we're hoping to overturn would tune out, while only the people in your audience who already agree with you would sit through it.
