Timestamps for learners: remember you can change speeds in settings and it doesn't affect the playback tone in the lesson! 1:30 - Chords you will need 3:19 - First riff fast 3:35 - First riff slow 4:28 - Second riff fast 4:44 - Second part slow
That’s a really good thing to let learners know actually, slowing video without changing tone is super useful for music in general. Screw that guy that said L lmao
This song has been a great exercise for me in hybrid picking. I’ve found that through hybrid picking I can hit all the notes much more consistently than flat picking
been going at it for about a week now. I'm not giving up but man, my pinky just does not go that fast. I feel like I need to start waking up at 5 am, crack some raw eggs and start doing pinky speed training exercises every day. To be fair I've realized how much I've neglected using my pinky until now. Thanks for this video, I'm going at it hard, and I hope it's going to pay off in a few months.
A good alternative exercise for pinky dexterity is if you jump from AandD string to DandG string with your pinky and ring together with a bar chord behind it, like you’d hear in Tenacious Ds song Kickapoo. cause I had the same issue lol. Hopefully that’s helpful and not too confusing and I hope you’re seeing progress dawg.
Thanks brother, You are correct in the complicated sound of the song, but after this tutorial I’ve been killing it. It’s been about a year and I still have this song on my daily guitar routine.
I love your intro to this video. I always thought that this was such a complicated song and I didnt realize it is actually simple and he just doesnt play it consistently. I love the have fun with it approach!
wow, you explained this so well and slowing it down was very helpful. Thanks so much for doing this! BTW I was addicted to Overflow Summation for a good while. keep bringing it dude!
With the reoccurring inconsistency in mind, in the studio version the G chord is played with your pinky on the 3rd fret on the b string. But awesome video you’re a great teacher!
Fair enough- this marks the second time I’ve gone, “What???”, checked the recording, and subsequently facepalmed. I do believe in the law of diminishing returns with regard to accuracy, though… at least in this song. 😉 Thanks for the comment, bud.
Played beautifully, sir. Forgot about this song until it just came on randomly when I was listening to music and I remembered how much I loved the intro.
Much appreciated! I noticed this “messy” style based on intent style is far more common with acoustic players than realized. John Mayer does this as well with a lot of his finger picking stuff or David Gray…Dave Matthews, etc.
I feel you on this! When I was younger and still really learning to play guitar, it took me a lot longer than it should have to fully grasp this concept. Must just be the way my brain works, but I really struggled with coming to terms with the free flowing 'framework' kind of guitar playing, especially when learning an existing song. I HAD to try to learn it precisely, note for note. Which made a song like this an absolute nightmare for me!
Wow! The tutorial we all have been waiting on for years. Nailed it man! Idk if I can get my pinky to move that fast on the second part but we’ll see! Hah thanks man!!!
I learned this about a year and a half ago (from this video). I memorized it in a few days and nailed it in a month or two... with fingerstyle... Coming back i completely forgot you and the Slightly Stupid man himself uses a pick. 😭 All these years until ~6 months ago i would only use a pick to get the dirt from my toes. Being reminded of this song, it'll definitely go into my routine. TRUSTY TOE PICK, I SUMMON THEE!!!
Its so wierd, i learned this song from a friend about 8 years ago and have always played it a certain way, always sounded just like the recording. Seeing now that i play it very differently from most!
Thanks for this. I’ve been playing it wrong for YEARS lol. It’s just such a fun song, you sort of feel it out. Kyle did a live cover with a Saxaphone user and you can hear the slight variations.
Thanks for taking the time to research how this is played and put this video together for all of us! Really appreciate it! Sick chops btw! I'm guessing as soon as I can almost play this, I'll get distracted with something else haha
After 2 weeks of train, i finaly succed the entier part of the demo and, by the way, step up my dexterity, thanks for this tuto, incredible song to folk guitare...
I had a trip: For some reason when you played it slow, at one point it felt like if I were to have sped it up, it would be inconsistent with the original... the weirdo in me sped it up to like x1.75 or x2...nope. You played it spot on haha it was awesome to see how this song's played! Thanks!
Thank you man!!! This is so awesome. I finally started playing guitar a few months ago and one of the main reasons was to learn this song 😁 I’m grateful for this awesome tutorial, the second part is a killer! But playing and singing this is so much fun. Any tips on how to get quicker with sliding the bar chord?
just gotta press hard af!! hahaha. might help to adjust the action on your guitar, but... honestly, don't trip too much about it. practice as much as you can stand it and it'll get there with time.
Thanks for the comment! I'm not sure "Guns in Paradise" is complicated enough to warrant shooting a tutorial video-- but if you're having trouble, the chords to that song are: Cm Gm F Gm, as far as I can tell. You'll have to listen to the song for the strumming pattern, but I bet you'd be able to figure it out!
Hey there, amazingly helpful video. I've tried learning this song quite a few times over the past 10 years and could never get the slide parts, but your video really broke it down for me. I'm a fingerstyle guitarist, but I'd love to learn this with a pick. Where did you get those tabs? I'm assuming you made them, but all of the other tabs for this song that I've found pale in comparison. If anyone can hook a sister up, I'd appreciate it!
Thanks! Yeah, I made the tabs... unfortunately, I made them for this video specifically, so they're .jpgs of the small, sectioned strips you see in the video-- not very convenient for sharing. Your best bet would probably be to slow the video down to .5x and follow along. Or maybe take a crack at copying the tabs from the video yourself!
@@UrbanTownshipI might try to copy them down. I have a bad habit of putting my guitar down every few years and then having to relearn everything I used to know. So having a trusted set of tabs for a song I like is a necessity for me! Edit: Oh and I already was slowing your video down and playing along, haha.
@@chalupasupremegordito5251 I feel ya bro. I should have said “easier for most people”. I grew up playing metal; my fingerpicking leaves a lot to be desired... I get the feeling most electrically-honed players are the same way.
I was actually surprised when I first saw that this song is played with a pick. As a person who discovered that I am "naturally" inclined to fingerstyle myself though, I'm relearning/practicing it with a pick just for a change. So far, it's a lot of fun!

You can play it now yes?👀
You'll get it bro. The main thing is to get the muscle memory down with your timing/rhythm.
How’d the journey go? I just started. I’ve got the notes down but the speed is far from there

This is an easy riff I learned it from only playing guitar less than a year
