After putting down my guitar almost thirty years ago, I’ve finally set myself the challenge to pick it back up. I turn sixty next year and my goal is to break through the confidence barrier to be able to play a few songs for family and friends and work on from there. One of my sons taught himself to play over the past few years simply using TH-cam and practising constantly. He’s absolutely incredible and he’s given me the motivation to believe I can do this. Perhaps not to the level he’s at but it’s definitely possible. So here goes …… 🤞🏼🤞🏼😊

Also... looking back, I think that the most beneficial thing that I did early on was trying to learn barre chords almost from the beginning, even though I couldn't really use them until a lot later. It feels completely impossible at first, and sounds terrible for a while after that - but once the combination of skill development and muscle development works its magic, a whole world opens up.

And with that, practicing making chord shapes without your first finger! My teacher had me do that early on which made learning barre chords much easier once we got there (still hard though since I have little weakling fingers and really high action on my guitar)

    • @nickgvaccaro
      @nickgvaccaro ปีที่แล้ว +7

@@nabinchapagain7311 A few things that seemed to (eventually) work for me:
-Roll the index finger a little back toward the headstock, so that you're pressing partly with the more bony part of the finger
      -Focus on thumb position
      - Break it up into smaller skills - do the index finger alone and make the strings ring, then do the other fingers of the chord, then put it together gradually.
-Start by becoming comfortable with the A minor barre chord shape - it's one of the easier ones (at least in my experience), and gives you a very useful B minor triad (vi in the key of D, iii in the key of G)

As an older guy just about to embark on my third go around of playing guitar, with many years of not playing in between, I can not emphasize this enough: HAVE FUN. All your tips are spot on, gotta say, as with any hobby, it’s easy to get burned out. You don’t have to completely step away like I made the mistake of doing. Change it up, play the songs you know in a different style than you’ve familiarized yourself with. Play “Your Body Is A Wonderland” like a reggae song, or whatever. Change it up, keep it fun. No amount of money spent on guitars or effects pedals is going to make you a better player, just enjoy what you’re doing and you won’t be able to get enough of it.

For people struggling with bar chords, electric guitar fixed my problem. Just learning bar chords on the electric guitar has made it so much easier on acoustic. I am still not perfect but I can get 6 clear sounding strings which is a massive jump. Bar chords are easier on electric guitar purely because you don't need to apply so much pressure to the frets because of the pick ups and also because of the smaller neck so I really do recommend trying this if you have access to an electric guitar. Also, electric guitars are SUPER FUN!

The capo tip is so real!!
I tried to learn guitar about a year ago and didn't stick with it after a couple of weeks. This year I decided give it another go and spent like $15 dollars on a capo and that made the biggest different. I could actually (try to) play some of the songs that I loved in their original key. It helped me get through that awful first month where everything I played sounded absolutely awful.

    2. Search the chords. Switching chords
    3. Use on top of the tips of your finger. Take a break if its hurts.
    4. Use the help of your hands
Strumming: gets better with time. Focus on chords.

    -learn the cheater chords
    -trouble shoot
    -watch acoustic cover.

Hey, I enjoyed this. I've been playing guitar all my life but not consistently. I tell people who say they don't have time the same thing, to only play a few minutes a day but I go as far as to say set a time limit and don't exceed it. I still play with a stopwatch. It is good so when the next day comes you can say that you only play a few minutes. Otherwise you could burn out. In time, if you choose you can increase the amount of time. I've gotten so I practice guitar 25 minutes in the morning and 25 minutes on another musical instrument. Then in the evening I play guitar another 25 minutes but it is optional, not forced.

Based on having tried to teach myself guitar with moderate success, this all seems like great advice. The only thing that I did (or would do) differently is starting off with fingers instead a pick. It seemed more natural, and it felt like there was less of an obstacle between me and the strings. But that's a matter of preference.
One thing that helped me out early on was using silk-and-steel strings - they're a nice middle point between steel and nylon, and make things easier on both the right and left hand.

  • @midnight4109

Hi Nina, you are right on so many scores. First, you don't need to know much of anything in order to play guitar, it just takes time, perseverance, and conditioned finger tips. For anyone wanting to buy who is afraid of getting the wrong guitar, Yamaha and Fender are two of the most tried and trusted names in beginner guitars. Just find the one you like the best that is in your price range and it'll be good. One thing about chord groups is using an anchor finger which doesn't move for the entire song, to gain confidence changing chords. My first guitars were hand me downs which needed work and I got discouraged so I stuck with piano which is my instrument of choice, however challenging. I live in a music city where there are so many who buy a nice guitar, take a few lessons and put it in the closet until they are ready to move on with their lives and sell it cheap which is how I got my current guitar which is a beauty, virtually new and came with capo, wall hanger, picks, a case and all that good stuff which runs into additional money. Something to consider before buying brand new.

Hot tip for investing in a guitar. Guitar center has a 45 day return policy. You can go in and buy a decent price guitar and before that 45 days is up you can decide if you want to play guitar or not. If you decide you do want to play guitar, and want a higher quality guitar you can return your guitar for a 100% refund and use that money towards a nicer guitar.

Also the ceiling with his songs r a lot higher than most pop artists because after you can play any of his songs from his studio versions… Learn his love stuff. Then once you can do all of that your basically you can play anything you want to play in terms of pop. Then your really set up for continuing on to harder genres because his guitar playing has a ton of little riffs and embellishes as well as a ton of his songs r really difficult in terms of rhythm playing. That’s how i improved really fast

The biggest mistake with the left hand is to put to much pressure, it wil hurt more, and you might even get cramp. First try the pressure you use when holding an egg, it really shouldn't be more then that. I play for 45 years now, strumming, fingerpicking and classical guitar, and I'm still trying to reduce the pressure in my left hand which shows me down while trying to play fast. And your fingers should be relaxed, only the one that are used at that moment have a little pressure which immediately souk be released when taking it off from the string

Your story is kinda similar to mine. My parents made me take guitar lessons when I was a kid but at that time, I didn't have a serious interest in it. So after taking like a year of lessons, the teacher shifted away to another country, and by that time I could play it pretty well. So, trusting me to continue practicing and playing, my parents didn't look for another guitar teacher. But I didn't do anything with my guitar for years after that. And then, when I finally saw the opportunity and resources, I picked it up again (this time with interest) towards the mid of 2021. And your channel has helped me so much! I can play a lot of songs now, and more than half of them are Taylor Swift songs that I learnt from you!

I just got my first guitar today and it is an electric. I got the guitar and the amp for $40. The part that was why my parents didn’t want to wait til Christmas is it doesn’t have 3 bridge pins or the strings. So the total cost is like $20 more. I think it’s worth since I’m going to work to make it work so I will be motivated to learn to play

I just want to clarify for anyone watching this that tabs and chords are different. Tabs are written out by fret and string, chord charts simply list the names of chords in the song. Please do not conflate the two, especially if you begin to venture out into playing outside of just for yourself.

I’d say go to a music store and buy a guitar. Maybe go with some you know who can already play a little if you literally can’t play anything at all. I’d steer clear of $100 Amazon guitars; there are a few good ones but many are trash and nothing will put you off faster than a bad guitar, that is poorly set up because it will be near impossible to play. Guitar is hard enough without having to fight with your instrument
