- The Pharisees taught that you became a sinner when you allowed what was outside you in the sinful world into your life. But the teaching of Jesus was the opposite. Jesus had been speaking only to the Pharisees, but this was so important that he called the crowd over to him so that everyone could hear what he had to say.
Jesus tells them clearly that nothing that enters a person from the outside can defile them, but instead, the things that defile us come from inside ourselves, from our own hearts.

For me food is a gateway to sin. Once I start eating pleasurable foods my will to stop other sin is diminished. I will start craving sensation. I find that fasting allows me to be grateful for food when I do eat.
God bless you. I also share your thought. In fact, I'm of the opinion that JESUS CHRIST THE ALMIGHTY GOD was referring to germs( unwashen hands ) in that statement.
Believers must be watchful and mindful of what they eat. In Rev. our GOD, JESUS CHRIST reprimanded one of the seven churches for eating food sacrificed to idols and warned them to repent.
For instance, Christians would do better in these last days if they would avoid eating all food items labeled with the HALAL stamp.

@@kniceish I think it is much deeper than germs and physical food.
It's doctrines, false teachings, what changes our hearts. Unclean hands could be an example of our actions. So they defile us, have we got our hands dirty. It's always on a higher understanding, a spiritual understanding.
