I started to worry that they’re going to stop printing it in the 1995 version, so I’ve been looking around at reviews for the Cambridge just in case. However, I have a PSQ NASB that I wanted the wide margin to line up with. I did not realize that RL Allan offers a wide margin NASB, because when I looked at their website there weren’t any. Good through review. My observation on the left text being lighter than text on the right, to my eye watching on my tablet, it looks like the way you have the light striking the pages, the left page is lighter than the right page making the right page text seem bolder or shadowed, at least on the video. In person it could be different. God Bless 😂

Schuyler is great, along with Allans and those other premiums but theyre really really really really expensive when they go here in the far-east. Yet awesome review with the fonts and spacing. Everyone (in US) in going crazy about this though.
Don't worry, they're expensive here in the US too. You can get a Bible that's at least 90% as good as the Schuylers (except for the wide margins mostly) for half the price or less.

It's a beautifully made Bible. Even with print non-unifirmity. The font seems large enough and the margins are good. I suppose they placed the references at the bottom to keep the width of the Bible down, and while I prefer centre column references, I'm okay with this in a wide margin Bible. It's a thick bible and I love a thick Bible. I'm wondering if Thomas Nelson will go the same when they release the NKJV wide margin next year? Nevertheless, this is a great Bible and I'm trying to get myself an NASB Bible, I've grown to love it. Sadly the updated 2020 edition isn't for me from what I've seen so far. It will be less literal and that is the strength of the NASB. Great review once more.
Thanks for commenting, Edward! Regarding the 2020 NAS, I think enough people will agree with you to give the LSB strong sales when it comes out. Perhaps high-end LSBs will be on the market in a few years. My only real issue with this Bible is the print. Some pages appear to my eyes almost as if they're covered with a thin film. The spectrum of the lamp on my desk can be adjusted, and I'm experimenting with warmer light. Initial results are promising -- the contrast seems to increase. I plan to try it under various conditions (at night, cloudy day, sunny day) to see how well it works. Nelson has a great opportunity with its wide margin. They'll probably print only red letter copies, but I've come to regard the red letters in the classic verse-by-verse center-column reference Bible as acceptable. (I'd prefer black ink, but these red characters are readable.) The NKJV Comfort Print font is _superior_ to the Milo, in my opinion. I think the key will be the paper. If it's thick and matte, the Nelson NKJV wide margin text block will probably be better than that in the Schuyler Wide Margin Quentel NKJV. Nelson will doubtless fall short in the hide department.
@@RGrantJones As is the norm, Nelson has never been able to match the quality of Schuyler when it comes to leather, but on font, they are comparable and even exceed Schuyler. Their premier collections are normally all black letters and I've been told it will also be done in the premier collection. For the most part, (I've never owned one of their premier Bibles or any premium Bible for that matter) I've heard that the paper quality is very good. And as for the binding, it can always be rebound. I'm eagerly waiting for this one and even saving for it too. Postage to Jamaica can be a lot, but christianbook.com usually has a reasonable shipping rate (around $20-25) to Jamaica, most of the time it is the cost of the Bible itself that is prohibitive. A Nelson premium Bible is almost a month's salary for me, can you therefore imagine the cost of a Schuyler? 😂 I'm hoping that it will be good and this can be the one Bible I go all out for. It may mean I don't get an NASB or any other Bible, but I'd be okay. What I'll be doing is waiting for the reviews then make a decision, if not I'll go for the classic verse by verse even though it's red letter.

Beautiful Bibles. I think it makes sense to buy holy books, JRR Tolkien novels, Persian poetry and other important humanities books only in hard cover or leather edition. It gives books the grace which they deserve. I feel like hard covers and leatherbacks are something like higher culture and they give a soul and grace to the library and the home which contains that library. Paperbacks are like pop culture, they wear off very fast, and then you need a new one. Not very respectful towards important books.

I wish the would of made the Vers numbers red like they did the chapters. I find it hard for my eyes to locate a verse on the page because it blends in with letters.
I have The New American Standard Bible in the regular size Quentel. I don't necessarily want the wide margin because they reduce the font in those. The Nelson premier DOES NOT.

Mr. Jones, I thought of you the other day when I found on eBay a green letter KJV Bible published by Collins / world publishers. I believe it was published in the late 70's. The words of Christ are printed in green and knowing what a big fan of red-letter Bibles you are, I was wondering if you had ever seen one of these.
Please Schyuler, make this NKJV. The NKJV market is very limited when it comes to high quality wide-margin Bibles. The only one I know of is the Cambridge and its tiny print/margins. I used to be NASB advocate but further studies have led me to the "traditional" text.
I think RoastBeefSandwich is right. Also, I heard a rumor that Nelson will be producing a wide-margin NKJV soon. I like the Nelson Comfort Print NKJV font better than the Milo, but Nelson is likely to publish a red letter edition, and the paper quality is a huge variable.

I have the wide margin Quentel. I didn't want the concordance to begin with, but since it had relatively few entries listed I figured no big deal, it probably won't add much to weight/size. When I got the Quentel I was surprised at how useless it was. Schuyler should have just left it out, or else given us more lined paper. As for me, the concordance will be used as more note paper in the back. My ribbons were crooked as well.

I think they just add it so when you get to the NT you still feel like you have a little meat left in your bible I would have loved it if they just exchanged it for notebook paper too or just left it out to make it thinner
There doesn't need to be so much white space in their concordances. It's a design decision because all the Quentel's concordances are typeset like that. Reflow the text so it fills more of the page and they can easily increase font size without increasing page count.
I’ve watched several of your videos now and my guess is that you favor the KJV/NKJV over some of the more modern translations such as NASB or ESV. Is my estimation correct? Enjoy your videos. 😊
Matthew - thanks for the kind comment! I think what you've written is broadly accurate, but that doesn't mean that I dislike the NASB (the 1977 edition, in particular, is very good) or the ESV. I tend to prefer translations in the Tyndale family, but I don't have a single favorite. When I'm listening to a sermon, I try to follow along in the speaker's translation. If I'm studying on my own, I often use a literal translation (e.g., KJV, NKJV, RV, ASV) alongside a more interpretive one. For devotional reading, I find myself using the KJV or the RSV most often.
@@RGrantJones Thanks for getting back to me and providing a kind and thorough response. Every so often I brush up on various translations and wish that I could be settled on just one, but I typically gravitate towards the NASB, ESV, and NKJV. To probe slightly, if you had to pick one of those 3, which would be your most solid recommendation? Also, what inspires you to prefer the 77 over the 95 NASB? I love NASB for its more literal nature, but hate the way it sounds and feels in the mouth for the more poetic passage.
@@matthewhazelwood6520 - your second question is easier for me to answer. The '77 NASB was more careful to place literal renderings in the text or in the annotations, but the '95 edition adjusted the text to make it more readable without adding annotations. (See Rev 13.1 as an example.) I agree that the NASB is clunky at times. In particular, as I mention in the NASB vs ESV video, I dislike the way it translates the Greek imperfect tense, and I wish it had retained the historic present, like the KJV. Backing up to the first question, I would give a very slight edge to the ESV. The selection chart at the end of the NKJV vs ESV video will give you my sense of how those two translations stack up over a range of factors. I believe that if I were to draw a similar chart comparing the ESV to the NASB, the ESV would come out ahead there as well.

Schuyler Bibles seem to sell very well, but they're just not for me. I don't understand why they even bother printing concordances that small. Incidentally I'd love to see you review the Cambridge wide margin Concord. All the reviews are overwhelmingly positive, but they are for most Schuyler Bibles too - you're one of the few who actually offers criticism for Bibles (you are the only reviewer I've seen that mentioned the print uniformity issues with the standard Concord for example). Maybe because you actually pay for them? I don't know.

(My camera didn't notice it a couple of times in this video when it was obvious to my eyes!) Not enough bits in their analog-to-digital converters, maybe. I certainly like this Schuyler Bible more than my Canterbury, because I think I can use it. But the high-end Bible I'm most pleased with is the Allan 62R, because of that bold font. I've thought about doing a comparison video of the Concord Wide Margin and the Allan 5WR. But I'm not very motivated to acquire the Concord WM because of the small font and the price.
I’ve appreciated your reviews on both translation and bibles. I’m curious to know which translation you use the most and why. I know you appreciate the older translations but I haven’t been able to grasp where you stand on English translations. Thank you for the solid reviews.
@@RGrantJones It does look like they've tweaked the font for this wide margin layout. Maybe moved to a semibold Milo, or perhaps the font just has more weight when it's printed a bit smaller. Either way it does look like an improvement.
@@marcusallynknight - Thanks for taking the time to comment! I'm not sure which translation I use the most these days. I spend a lot of time during the week reading whatever edition I intend to review the coming weekend. When I listen to a sermon or Bible study, I usually know what translation the preacher/teacher is using and follow along in that -- which means I read the ESV, NAS, NKJV, and KJV quite often. When I study the New Testament by myself, I usually choose two translations, one literal and one less so, along with UBS5. The literal translation could be the 1885 Revised Version, the KJV, the ASV, the NAS (usually the '77), the NKJV, or the ESV. The less literal translation could be the NRSV, the NEB, or the Jerusalem Bible. The Old Testament situation is similar, but I also consult the NETS or the Lexham English Septuagint and sometimes the Greek via Rahlfs' Septuagint (which takes the place of UBS5).

Please, can you give me your recommendation for the most accurate english Orthodox Bible which includes all eastern Orthodox books of the Bible.

The font is too small. We need at least an 8 point semi bold font. But it is a beautiful Bible. So well made.

If I'm studying on my own, I often use a literal translation (e.g., KJV, NKJV, RV, ASV) alongside a more interpretive one. For devotional reading, I find myself using the KJV or the RSV most often.
@@RGrantJones Thanks for getting back to me and providing a kind and thorough response. Every so often I brush up on various translations and wish that I could be settled on just one, but I typically gravitate towards the NASB, ESV, and NKJV. To probe slightly, if you had to pick one of those 3, which would be your most solid recommendation? Also, what inspires you to prefer the 77 over the 95 NASB? I love NASB for its more literal nature, but hate the way it sounds and feels in the mouth for the more poetic passage.
@@matthewhazelwood6520 - your second question is easier for me to answer. The '77 NASB was more careful to place literal renderings in the text or in the annotations, but the '95 edition adjusted the text to make it more readable without adding annotations. (See Rev 13.1 as an example.) I agree that the NASB is clunky at times. In particular, as I mention in the NASB vs ESV video, I dislike the way it translates the Greek imperfect tense, and I wish it had retained the historic present, like the KJV.
Backing up to the first question, I would give a very slight edge to the ESV. The selection chart at the end of the NKJV vs ESV video will give you my sense of how those two translations stack up over a range of factors. I believe that if I were to draw a similar chart comparing the ESV to the NASB, the ESV would come out ahead there as well.

That would be fantastic! Unfortunately, Schuyler is a business, and I suspect their instincts tell them that such a Bible wouldn't sell.

Schuyler Bibles seem to sell very well, but they're just not for me. I don't understand why they even bother printing concordances that small.
Incidentally I'd love to see you review the Cambridge wide margin Concord. All the reviews are overwhelmingly positive, but they are for most Schuyler Bibles too - you're one of the few who actually offers criticism for Bibles (you are the only reviewer I've seen that mentioned the print uniformity issues with the standard Concord for example). Maybe because you actually pay for them? I don't know.
Thanks for commenting, RoastBeefSandwich! I too wonder why faded print doesn't bother other people. But we're all wired differently, so it may be that they just don't notice it. (My camera didn't notice it a couple of times in this video when it was obvious to my eyes!) Not enough bits in their analog-to-digital converters, maybe.
I certainly like this Schuyler Bible more than my Canterbury, because I think I can use it. But the high-end Bible I'm most pleased with is the Allan 62R, because of that bold font.
I've thought about doing a comparison video of the Concord Wide Margin and the Allan 5WR. But I'm not very motivated to acquire the Concord WM because of the small font and the price.
I’ve appreciated your reviews on both translation and bibles. I’m curious to know which translation you use the most and why. I know you appreciate the older translations but I haven’t been able to grasp where you stand on English translations. Thank you for the solid reviews.
@@RGrantJones It does look like they've tweaked the font for this wide margin layout. Maybe moved to a semibold Milo, or perhaps the font just has more weight when it's printed a bit smaller. Either way it does look like an improvement.
@@marcusallynknight - Thanks for taking the time to comment! I'm not sure which translation I use the most these days. I spend a lot of time during the week reading whatever edition I intend to review the coming weekend. When I listen to a sermon or Bible study, I usually know what translation the preacher/teacher is using and follow along in that -- which means I read the ESV, NAS, NKJV, and KJV quite often. When I study the New Testament by myself, I usually choose two translations, one literal and one less so, along with UBS5. The literal translation could be the 1885 Revised Version, the KJV, the ASV, the NAS (usually the '77), the NKJV, or the ESV. The less literal translation could be the NRSV, the NEB, or the Jerusalem Bible. The Old Testament situation is similar, but I also consult the NETS or the Lexham English Septuagint and sometimes the Greek via Rahlfs' Septuagint (which takes the place of UBS5).

@@scotte2213 - yes. I wish I hadn't bought it. For me, the darkness of the print is very important: I'm disappointed with the typeface in this Bible. Otherwise, it's a great Bible.
