I listen to this song every st. Patrick’s day, beautiful song that speaks of a land I’ve never been, but from where my ancestors lived and loved. This song reminds me to be grateful for what I’ve had, and what I still have
While you're still "fighting" the British in your head, the Muslims are going to take the whole damn place - and your politicians are making it happen.
The Irish fought England for 800 years. Their language was outlawed, as was their religion, their schools, their music, even their dancing. They hung onto it all, and finally pushed England out. I still hope for a unified, secular country.
The English are trying to do the same thing to the Germans right now. They've got Elon Musk and people like that saying all the evil and wokeness comes from Germany. You know who has controlled Germany since WW2? The UN! Geuss who was the biggest player in the UN? UK!
It's my "fourth green field" which is the correct lyric. It refers to Ulster which is "field" (mostly) still held by "strangers". The other three "fields" of Connacht, Leinster, and Munster are most assuredly in "bloom".
My auntie used to sing this to my old grandad on Saturday nights when they'd have a few tiples. R.I.P to them both, hopefully they're up heaven still singing together.
Four green fields = Ireland's four ancient "provinces" (regions). "Ireland-the island made up of the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland-includes four traditional regions, or 'provinces' *Ulster* in the north, *Munster* in the south, *Leinster* in the east, and *Connaught* in the west. They have no legal status today, but share distinct histories and identities." -- Wiki The song was written by the famous "Bard of Armagh", Tommy Makem. Jim McCann does Tommy, Ireland and the song proud. :)
Are you sure about that? Normal people living in villages who hardly knew where other countries were. Do you know what happened to soldiers who didn't obey the Kings in England then? To the public if they opposed? The royalty weren't even English they were all foreign
Are you ashamed of what they did to the Irish protestants? When the Irish catholics raided the whole settlement of protestants and massacred the families? Or of, ,up until the 70s!, Irish catholic church imprisoning single Irish women who had babies, abducting the children, adopting them out in America. Using the imprisoned women as slave labour? Are you ashamed of Irish priests doing the rounds of homes questioning Irish women if they have "self pleasured"? Just wondering
@@Deejaay83urj38 What are "foreigners" doing, living in Northern Ireland in the first place anyway..? And claiming it as their own? No-one had the right to form a false country in the North of my country. And look at the aftermath of taking our land and "planting" foreigners there.. If people want to be "British" and claim "British" heritage, what in the name of God are they doing living in IRELAND? God Save Ireland 🇮🇪
I have it on cd and I play it in the car. It brings me to tears and I am Australian with Italian parents! I love Irish music. Joyous and sad and hopeful and defiant all at once. Incredible.
"What did I have?" said the fine old woman "What did I have?" this proud old woman did say "I had four green fields, each one was a jewel But strangers came and tried to take them from me! But my fine, strong sons, they fought to save my jewels! They fought and they died, and that was my grief!" said she "Long time ago," said the fine old woman "Long time ago," this proud old woman did say "There was war and death, plundering and pillage! My children starved, by mountain, valley, and stream And their wailing cries, they reached the very heavens! And my four green fields ran red with their blood!" said she "What have I now?" said the fine old woman "What have I now?" this proud old woman did say "I have four green fields. One of them's in bondage In strangers' hands who tries to take it from me! And my sons have sons, as brave as were their fathers! Many do not know that this song is historical. A Sad time for Ireland. The old woman is the personification of Ireland, the four green fields are the four counties.
As I listened to this song, I couldn't help but think of Ukraine and how she cries for her Green Fields and her children. Peace! Venerable Don Tonino Bello, intercede for peace.
Thanks for ruining this fine song. Fields of eastern Ukraine would still be flourishing if it weren’t for their own government’s failure to provide support instead of sacrificing them for the decisions of Kyiv. It also definitely would be intact if the British and the Americans wouldn’t use it as the frontline against the Russians
Well Tommy Makem would be devastated to hear, and so am I, that with our attempts at not upsetting other cultures living here we are in fact losing our own culture and heritage. Irish kids in many Irish schools are no longer hearing their names being called out "as Gaeilge" from the Rolla anymore.. Teachers just call out "John, Mark, Eoin, Mary" etc.. Something needs to be done about this.. I've spoken to the Principal about the importance of letting the kids know their names "as Gaeilge" as it's their right and their heritage, cand all he said was that he'd ad the teachers their opinion at the next staff meeting.. I find it atrocious.. Our attempts at being "with it" are causing us to be "without it".. And we are losing our language, and our geriatagecwith each generation by allowing this to happen..
The Irish language was outlawed by the British in 1367, by pain of death. The decree had to be read in Irish because most people did not speak English. When I lived in Ireland during the 70’s there were only a few native Irish speakers left.
Eireans are now under His huge blessings. They are no longer in outback of the global town. I note the strangers are now not from outside, but their inside, distracted New-Age movement. Wungak
We're now a proud independent country as part of the EU, each country of which, no matter how big or small has a veto. I'm damn happy that we're part of it,
