Having a loved one with epilepsy and PTSD, it is essential to offer support and make sure to advocate for them. Help to create a strong care plan for them and educate others on what they are dealing with.

As someone who had awful PTSD after the war and has had epilepsy for 14 years as a result, I am a huge advocate of the ketogenic diet. It transformed my life by reducing my seizure frequency and improving my sleep, which dramatically improved my depression. I went from having daily seizures to having seizures at about a rate of 2 per month. As great side effects, my skin also cleared up and I lost some weight! It is a ridiculously strict diet, very expensive, and not that fun but I am living proof that it is doable. For reference, I kept my daily carbohydrate intake to around 15 grams. It is always a good idea to check with your neuro about it, who may want to track your kidney/liver functions as you progress on the diet. Some neuros will laugh at the idea of a diet as therapy or discourage you, while others will be totally supportive. I am lucky I got one of the latter. I wish you all the best journey on your therapy.
edit: I just wanted to add that I am still on all my meds lol. I did not just switch the meds for the diet. I added the diet as part of my therapy. Thought that was essential to add.

It is good that you have found a way to reduce your seizure activity and PTSD symptoms through more than just medication. Also thank you for acknowledging that you still take your medications. Many feel that Keto is a replacement where for many it is just another tool for helping control seizure activity. I'm glad you are working with your doctor to stay on top of things and have educated yourself. Thank you for sharing your story with us. If you ever have any questions, please feel free to email us at info@defeatingepilepsy.org.

Your story sounds like my own, including going no-contact with family. God bless you for sharing your story, and may you find peace on your journey.
I did use EMDR therapy also, and I must say that it's extremely intense! It combines exposure therapy with reprocessing (hand pulses in my case, rather than eye movements), and I only recommend it if you're ready to confront extremely painful memories and emotions.
Also, I tried many medications for my insomnia and the only thing that has worked for me is Hydroxyzine. It's an anti-histamine that is sometimes prescribed for anxiety, but it works very well for my insomnia (taken 1/2 hour before bedtime and I sleep 6-10 hours, uninterrupted).

Thank you so much and thank you for sharing your story with me. I recently had a wonderful breakthrough in which after 20 years I was able to connect with my biological father. My two siblings and their mom know about me now and in January, I'm flying home to meet them for the first time. Since connecting with them, my anxiety and depression have decreased greatly and it has given me the strength to look past what I have gone through and work towards healing.

There are times when I dream about my illness also sometimes I wake up feeling frightened like my seizures causes me to have nightmares and while sleeping and having a dream about seizures can also trigger seizures in your sleep and that's even more frightening cause you can have a seizure while sleeping and you can die from it I have seizures in my sleep All the time and it have me scared that one day I might have a seizure in my sleep and die and I know a lot of people died in their sleep from epilepsy

I'm glad that you are going to therapy. I have found it to be more challenging to have PTSD than epilepsy at times. I know my triggers with epilepsy and what to do to avoid them. The frustration with my PTSD is it's due to medical trauma so every time I'm around medical professionals, especially nurses, it's hard to stay focused and not get upset. The one thing I will say is if you just started therapy, at times it will feel overwhelming as you start discussing things. Keep going to therapy because once you face what you need to and set goals, things will start to get better. I still go to therapy once a month and it has improved my overall health for the better. Good luck with everything and any questions you have, please ask. I'm here to help.

Excellent video, thank you so much Natalie this really helped me!!.
I to struggle with Terrible Traumatizing memories of an alcoholic family member & as well one who struggles with bipolar & I was always a target for him.
I was also abused by another man who sexually raped me & threatened to kill me or my family had I ever told anyone what he was doing to me, years later I finally took him to court & he was let off because not knowing back then due to having a Terrible doctor who never asked for an MRI until years later I learned (Thanks to Toronto Western Hospital Nurolgest Dr. Delcampo) that I Actually have *Bilateral Polymicrogyria* which is why I struggled with dates & that was why he was let off for 5 years of sexual horrifying memories.
This has helped teach me that I Truely do need therapy as scary as it is to bring these horrifying memories up it's the only way to overcome them.

Ashley I'm so sorry you went through that. My father struggles with bipolar disorder and it has resulted in us having a very toxic relationship. I am in therapy now for a past sexual trauma and have found in order to help others, I need to heal. There is no shame in saying you need help. It takes a lot of courage and strength to heal. Please stay strong and work towards healing, you deserve to be happy. You can always email me at nboehm@defeatingepilepsy.org if you have any questions or need to talk. Stay strong 💜

      Hey Natalie,
I've been trying to find a good group for people battling epilepsy & I'm just trying to see if anyone else experiences the feeling I do during a seziure before waking up, I feel like I'm falling down a completely pitch black dark tunnel falling Endlessly & wake up short of breath... It's a terrifying seziure & afterwards I always cry I can't help it.
I was just trying to see if anyone else experiences that feeling as well during a seziure before waking up😕

@@Ashley-cw3yi the one that I go to is the Triad Epilepsy Support Group. They meet the first Thursday of every month. My friend James runs it. I don't know if anyone has had the same experience, but it is a small group with a lot of support. You can find them on Facebook. I'm so sorry you are experiencing this. I have something similar, but it is not a seizure, it is due to my PTSD. After having a night terror, I cry as well. It is part of healing I find, so don't beat yourself up for it. You can always email me or if you need to talk, you are welcome to call. Just let me know how I can help.

It's the same here. My friends have looked out for me so much in my darkest of times battling PTSD. Over the years I have found ways to reduce my night terrors and anxiety, but I find certain situations can still cause me to get triggered very easily. Working with a therapist to develop coping skills has made such a difference.

I have been diagnosed with PTSD and after remembering the trauma I blocked I had seizure-like events. I would feel like I was detaching from my body and would feel scared. I had night terrors and could get angry very easily. I saw a therapist that worked with trauma victims and I received cognitive behavioral therapy to learn coping skills and reduce stress.

    Just use the ketogenic diet.

The keto diet is beneficial for many, but not everyone can adapt to it. I would say to everyone here, please talk to your doctor before making any major changes to your medication or nutrition. For those who do benefit from the keto diet, it can be life saving and improve the quality of life for many.
