This was a touching review, man. My late cousin adored the original FF7 and he was so excited for the remake in 2019. He passed a month before the remake was released. I have a brand new copy of the remake in my office and I plan to get an unopened copy of Rebirth as well.

This video struck home SO MUCH for me... I lost my dad to cancer too in the same period. But I remember he always saw me playing this game in his last years. He noticed the MUSIC above all else (he was a musician) and for some reason out of all the games he saw me play, he always sat in the couch and watch me play FFVII because he was so intrigued by its music.
And now you're focusing just as well on the music, it really reminded me of this bittersweet period where this game gave me comfort and got me through it in a way.
I really wish the best for your mom and you and Kim... We'll hear from you when you got the time. Until then take all the time you need to process this.
    Take care

I'm in similar position. My dad is still around but my mom has stage 4 cancer. Breast cancer that metastasized to the liver. Treatment was working but now has multiple tumors growing fast and i fear this is my last year with the best person i know. Art can both give the feeling that it empathizes the pain and distracts from it. As i get older... i realize how short life is and how we have to show and tell the people we love them as much as possible.

Final Fantasy 7 is a game about loss, and how our characters deal with that loss. Despite being defeated and bested at nearly every point in the game, the ones that live persist until they preserver.
I don’t think it’s any coincidence that all these years later you get to revisit these characters again. They serve as a great reminder that no matter what we lose, there will always be something worth fighting for.

I know how you feel, Johnny. I few years back, my mom entered hospice care and I was playing Assassin’s Creed Origins at the time as an escape when everything was feeling overwhelming. A few months later, when she passed away, I was playing Bloodstained. I really feel both games kept me sane in those impossible moments. But I could never go back and replay them now. Not because they’re not worth replaying, they absolutely are, but because they put me right in the mindset I was in-drowning in grief. Games are such an amazing medium. They evoke a wide range of emotions in us and can help us cope with some really heavy issues. Truly wondrous.

I don't comment much on here. I'm not even a Final Fantasy fan. Never played one. I always watch your uploads, even on titles that doesn't align with my tastes, because of how passionate you are about gaming. I'm working, and have this on in the background, then hear your news about your mom. I immediately stopped working to hear your comments. Life always comes full circle, and sometimes, not in the ways you want it to. It's a blessing and a curse that your passion ties to these memories of both your mother, and father. But your passion will always be there for you when you're ready for it again. I am so sorry to hear about your mom.

Horrendous game. Combat is the worst it's ever been. Enemies have super armor and can stunlock the player way too easily, and all enemies have broken tracking hitboxes on all their attacks. The lock on doesn't work properly. This is the worst combat i have ever seen in a game. Square Enix somehow made it worst than the first and that was awful too.

Great review. Sorry to hear about your mother. I lost mine last year while playing Remake. I feel bad for people who don't understand how much a game like this can dictate your outlook on life. There are a few pieces of different media that I can say that about. I played the original FF7 when I was 15-16 and I can honestly say no other game has affected me they way it did. I still tear up when I hear Aerith's theme. All the music is hauntily beautiful. If I could erase my memories of all the great JRPG's I've enjoyed and play them for the 1st time again, I would. I'm very grateful for these remakes as it's letting me experience them again without knowing what will happen exactly.

I have a spinal disability and wasn't always this way, I had an awful accident when I was 27 and I'm nearly 42 in two days, sometimes I ask myself why I carry on trying to smile and fight on and the reason I do is because I'm good at pretending to be okay. Whether that's a comment or reply, we feel that pain through your words and many of us can relate to for different reasons. Play that game and smile, smile like you've never smiled before. I'm so sorry for the loss of your mum and dad. I know this feeling to have memories from a person tied to videogames. In some way it's really sad but on the other hand you always remember the person you loved and so they get immortal.

Thank you so so much for sharing your personal story. My father passed away 3 months ago of cancer, and I just decided to finally buy a PS5 and I’m just into Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth.
(I played the original one 27 years ago too)

So well spoken and the themes of the game and life are incredibly bittersweet.
The music, the memories--all wrapped up in my childhood and getting relived now.
I CANNOT believe how much care and love has been done and went into the game and rebirth. Truly grateful for the game, and other fans that are passionate about the game and positive effects it’s had on life.
Thanks for your honest share and appreciate your passion.

Man Johnny I’m so sorry for these misfortunes. The video with your mother is one of my favorite videos you’ve ever made because you can tell how in tune she is with your life. So many people would wish for love like that. I’m so glad you have gotten for so many years. Keeping you in my prayers mate. ❤

Been watching you for a while. My mother passed away just a few years ago rather suddenly. I would spend hours in the early morning talking to her about what had happened in the JRPGs i was playing when i was younger. Something about her eager smile as I talked about each character from Final Fantasy 3/6, Earthbound, Chrono Trigger…I still miss it and I always will.
Sending you tons of love, man. My fellow JRPG lover and compatriot.

So sorry to hear about your mother. I saw an earlier comment that elaborated after they said they hardly comment, and I would like to second that. I also hardly comment on TH-cam but I have also been watching your videos for years now and always take your opinions into consideration because I have a similar taste in games you do. Very much love to play rpgs and ff has a huge influence on my life so it really does hurt to hear about your mother. Kudos to you for keeping it together in the video. I very much look forward to playing ff7 rebirth and I will do so in honor of you and best wishes to you and your family.

All my love, and wishes to you. I know this video was rough. Prayers for your mother and your whole family. I just lost both my parents roughly two years apart... My Dad from Covid in 2021, and my mother, the beginning of December this last year due to extensive brain damage from being in a hypoglycemic coma. My heart is with you. This review means so very much. To everyone else who has experienced tragedy, my heart is with you as well.

Sorry to hear that. I feel for ya bud. My mom passed away 4 years from cancer too. Coincidencely the first time I bet ff7 was during the late 90s. I was playing it with my twin brother who at the time had cancer. Unfortunately he too passed a few months later. It's funny hearing you talk about your time growing up in surrey as I grew up about 20 min away. Keep up the good work. Love the videos. And again sorry to hear about ur mom.

I just want to say that I’m sorry for what you’re going through and all we can do as parents is focus on creating wonderful memories with our own children. Thank you for the years of videos and here’s to many more. Thank you, John.

Your words and tribute are very touching. Your parents will always be proud that they raised someone with the ability to spread so much compassion and warmth to countless people in your life as well as viewers across the world. Unfortunately I lost my mother two months ago, so I will also be connecting to the themes you described on a deeply personal level, as well as the healing effects these games have to offer. You and your family will also be in my thoughts as I play through Rebirth. Thank you for being my favorite TH-camr and biggest inspiration, your community loves you and has your back during this time!

I am sorry to hear about your mother and even your father Johnny. I have a similar experience with cancer and video games. I lost my little brother several years ago to cancer. Our game that we played together was Dragon Quest 9. We got to the final boss but never got to beat it before he passed away tragically. I didn't touch the game for years until I was in college and found your channel while looking for more dragon quest content. Once I got home for break I finally beat the game. Thank you for that and I am glad you are able to find something deeper with ff7 while going through this

So sorry to hear about your mom John. Final Fantasy 7 is a special one. As I am playing the original and the newer versions it keeps having a deep impact from being a teenager and all those years later. And in the various stages you've gone through life it keeps on giving something else. I want to say I feel the same about your channel. I can't remember how long I have been following you but for at least 10 years now. Your content is so positive (happyconsolegamer right) but you will not shy away from the tougher themes in life and I can't really describe what it means to me. Thank you John and the best in these times.

I'm sorry about your mom and dad man. I can relate to you heavily. One of my first experience with JRPGs and video games in general was Final Fantasy VIII, and I have core memories of my dad helping me through the beginning of the game and teaching me how it works.
Unfortunately my dad passed away in 2019 from a heart attack and in my grieving I bought Final Fantasy VIII Remastered, but I have yet to play it and to be honest I don't think I can. I don't know if you read comments but if you do you're not alone.
Thanks for your incredible reviews and content. Your energy and enthusiasm about the genre I love really brightens my day when I watch your videos.
    Take care of yourself man.

This is more than a game for me, i'm 45 now, and when i played the ps1 original when it came out all those long years ago my Father sat next to me and watched me play this game from beginning to end, it was the only game he enjoyed watching me play until I finished it, he passed away shortly after, so when I played the VII remake 4 years ago it hit me hard with tears running down my face, the melodies, the music, the characters, it felt like I had gone back in time and I felt like his spirit was by my side watching me play once again, this game is very special for me, I had no idea that it was also for a lot of people! Stay strong Johnny, cherish every moment with her!

I can relate to your connection to the game. When ff7 remake came out, my mom got covid, which was the beginning of the pandemic. She was at a nursing home and it was locked down so no one could have visitors. The remake really helped take my mind off of what was going on. Then she died from covid, and at the time it was difficult to travel anywhere. So I had to stream her funeral. Playing part 1 helped me get through that difficult time.
As for the original, this game also encouraged me to see the world. Joined the navy after high school. Clouds wanting to be a soldier helped gave me some direction. Retired in 2020 just when the remake came out.
