The TH-cam algorithm led me to this channel and I got hooked. You guys have inspired me to pick up my violin that has been sitting unused for years at my parents' house. When I moved out for post-secondary, I didn't want to disturb my new neighbours and just stopped playing. I got it tuned up, and then I muddled through some scales, twinkle twinkle, hot cross buns, and then butchered happy birthday. I guess I'm going to have to practice a bit before I move on to any Paganini.

Eddy, your wrist is a little too low when you start the upbow staccato. If your wrist is low in comparison with your fingers, your fingers have no space to impulse the stroke upwards. Upbow staccato is primarily centred around the fingers and thumb as these are the only muscles sensitive enough to do the movement. By way of preparing for your upbow staccato run, drop your fingers in relation to your wrist, then martellato up. As you work up proficiency, you can upgrade martellato for a true flying stroke, then add speed. Notice when you were doing it at the end of your 7 days, your wrist was higher compared to when you started, but it was still lower than it should be for full efficiency.

Well dang it. My teacher - who famously had a VERY fluid and relaxed wrist - told me to tighten things up for that passage, then just kinda "think the Minuet in G" (quote from "The Music Man") if you will. Not helpful. Your detailed explanation makes me wish I was that age again instead of closer to the end, and certainly no longer needing to learn this stroke.

i really appreciate you uploading this. the first piece that forced me to really work on this technique was the 1st movement of Seitz's student concerto no. 3, but i still end up fudging it half the time. it was encouraging to see an extremely skilled violinist experience the same types of issues i've dealt with when doing this technique (e.g., wanting to tense the right arm, inconsistent pressure when moving up the bow, left wrist tension, etc.), and then getting to see your approach to isolating the problems and applying targeted exercises for improvement. going out of your way to use performance as a test is an underrated point too.
i'm still at the "sometimes i get it and go 'wooo!' and smile" phase, and it made me smile seeing you do the same thing each time you got it, as well as when you got it while performing for brett. great stuff! :))

Isn't learning this technique from Brett in the first place will avoid a lot of frustration along the way? 😱 I'm impressed by your determination, Eddy. I can't last a day, let alone a week of learning new things on my own like you do. 🥴 So, congrats on that! 😁👍

It's a good feeling to improve on a technique that you've been lacking in for so long. I improved my vibrato a few years back by labbing hard on it for a few weeks.

Great playing, Eddy! Even though I'm a clarinet player, I admire your skill and hard work. Though in my school band, we mostly play Wind Band pieces, I've gotten into classical because of you two & Your Lie in April. Wen I hear Introduction and Rondo Capprissico, I can't help but think of Kaori and Kousei playing together. Thank you, Brett and Eddy, for making music fun!

This is like training your 4th and 5th finger muscles to do trills and play the melody with your 1st on the piano version of La Campanella near the cadenza. Absolute torture, especially when the trills start to shift down right after 😭.
