Bass player fisher Chill Same here, we are allowed one oversized red drum as long as we tag it. Other than that if the fish is over 28 inches we have to throw it back. What’s the size limit in Florida?
I've never seen this happen in person but on the game warden shows on tv I've seen them take illegal fish that were already dead to donate them to soup kitchens. I think it is a big waste since it was already dead. Reminds me of something funny....when I was a kid I was fishing a pier with my uncle. He had a little speckled trout in a bucket of water that he knew was short. Sure enough the fwc comes along and sees the little fish. He tells my uncle to hold it up and says it looks short.....he then says "put it back in the water I got to get my tape measure" so what does my uncle do? He tosses the fish over the rail back into the water lol. Omg I was pretty young but I remember that officers face got so red and he almost yelled, what did you do that for, and my uncle was like you told me to lol. Sorry for the long post but that's too funny not to share.
Back when Striped Bass were endangered, I saw a guy get caught with 11 fish which was a $500 fine per fish with 3 violations. Game Warden said he watched the guy for several hours and waited for him to pull his boat out of the water on the ramp we were about to use. The guy first lied and said he didn't catch anything because he didn't think the warden knew about his hidden well beneath his seat. Hard lesson to learn. Also told the guy you better hope they're all still alive.
Nice one Elias! For those mullet, try a Mepps spinner (Size 0, or 1) with a gulp sandworm behind it. Ultra light line and hang on cos they really take off. We use 4lb fluoro straight through or lighter if you have the space to play them out in.
The one time I actually saw a game warden was with a beer in my hand. He was cool about it. I was honest. I told him on my way to the river I stocked up my cooler with sodas and thought a tall can sounded good. I let him know I will be there a few hours so I wouldn't be driving with alcohol. He gave me the regular routine, let me see you're license and checked my cooler and all that and said have a good day. He started walking away and I shouted hey want a coke? He took me up on the offer. And went back to his patrol down the riverbank. He did let me keep it and finish it. Said it would be a waste of good beer to pour it out

I had a game warden here in Texas confiscate some fish from an angler near me. He cited the guy, checked my license then asked me if I wanted the fish. He said he didn't have an ice chest to keep it as evidence, but just took a pic of it for court. He said he didn't want to waste it.
I am in favor of a count limit, and no size restrictions. Better off to keep your first 5, than to go though 15 fish (maybe killing some in the process) to get your size that you need. Of course, that fish will not go to waste. It will become part of other fishes and turtle's diet....so...it is just the guy's family that lost out on a meal. Of course the government officials that wrote the law really don't care about that....it is all just numbers and statistics to them.
Sir FishSlayer there’s reasons to why there are restrictions such as limits and size restrictions. So the whole damn species doesn’t go extinct in said area and then your family really doesn’t have shit to eat
The size restrictions are so that fish reach a sufficient size to reproduce and keep other certain fish species and sizes in check. If you take fish of any size, you might only have all the young fish which throws the whole ecosystem out of balance.
I don’t usually keep redfish that big anyway. I prefer mines around 18”-22” for the best quality, especially back waters. If I have to keep measuring it then I’ll just toss it back. If it’s clearly legal then I’ll keep it.
made him throw it back because it hurts the angler to see a good fish to waste like that, it’ll make him think twice on next time he harvests an illegal fish
Guy is lucky he wasn't in Maine...Saw a guy out in a John boat hauling in illegal stripers one after another, all too short. He had two coolers on boat. He comes into boat launch, loads up boat on trailer, then State Fish and Game block him on ramp. He got arrested, cuffed, boat and tackle got confiscated and towed along with his car. The only way shelters get meat is by way of road kill. Maine hit this guy with $10k fine, 1yr of community service, court fee's and lost fishing license for 5 years. Article in paper Said he already had been to court for similar incident 2 yrs prior. It just isn't worth it to Not follow the rules of Maine ...tough lesson to learn..
Nice to see an officer upholding the law and being strict, but yet professional about it. You do not have to donate it to a “soup kitchen” by federal statute and since he’s abiding by federal laws that’s what he is referencing. It maybe a state of Florida Law or Regulation, but he was NOT a State Officer. Either way, if you’re hunting, fishing, etc...just know what you are doing and do it the correct way period. Good video
My question is was the guy cited for the undersized fish or was the officer doing him a "favor" by allowing him to release it? I witnessed some guys get cited for undersized largemouth bass a couple years ago. They were also over the limit. The officer allowed them to release any that could swim off. This resulted in them only being cited for 3 undersized bass which hopefully was lesson enough. I'm pretty sure had the officer taken possession of the oversized fish and donated it he would have had to cite the angler so there would be a record of how it came to be in his possession. The thing that bothered me is the guy who was caught breaking the law came out and said the State guys take and donate the oversized fish like he had done this before and been caught before.
Good ! Hopefully the guy paid a fine too. Agree with your comment above that it makes no sense NOT to harvest the fish at that point. If the fish is dead then definitely make the guy pay a fine to basically BUY the fish and let him keep it rather than have it go to waste. At the 3:30 mark the guy is just looking at it.... should just give the fish mouth to mouth at that point LOL
Fish Finder I don't think he did get a fine, I thought I heard the officer say "I'm just gonna give you a warning" when the guy came back up from throwing the fish in the water
I think that just be rewarding him despite being fined. It's not really going to waste as far as they are concerned. It just goes to the bottom of the food chain...literally. Redfish are a considered a game fish here. It is illegal to sell or purchase them. I could give you one that I caught as long as you didn't already have one.
Dylan...I can kind of see where their logic is coming from. It could get kind of murky as to a law enforcement situation. "I didn't sell it, I gave it to him.." They just made it cut and dry...no transfer of possession whatsoever. I'm surprised that we don't have that rule. FWC will set up surveillance with NVGs trying to bust people at the Sanibel pier and also from boats watching hotspots. They absolutely mean business down here.
Rules are rules, if you catch an undersize fish here and it dies inadvertently it still must go back. This stops poachers claiming the fish died from the fight in order to keep them. Also it returns the fish to the eco-system, i'm sure other fish will feed on it.
Do you make them baits you gave that guy to try.Very cool of you to give baits to someone to try ,especially if you just met him.I found baits like these on Amazon and have been thinking about giving the chartreuse/Googan green a shot on stripers.Do you have any recommendations?By the way that fish was totally wasted by that officer.
Very odd, the fish is the evidence. He was nice enough to let the guy try to release it but being dead it was no go. Guess he didn't want to bother going to court. In my state, if you have a dead short fish, you'll see it frozen in the court room right before the judge fines you $250.
@@bocatcc Unless he put the tape to it on camera there's no proof. Just a government agent saying so and we all know how trustworthy (cough choke) they are.
@@kg7tuo999 I guess you are slow. All our wildlife officers in florida wear a body cam. The proof is the guy admitting it was undersize by trying to release it. The poacher tried to release it so that is enough proof for a judge that he had an undersize fish.
@@bocatcc If the sportsman (innocent until PROVEN guilty) admitted on camera that it was undersized then that MIGHT suffice to convince a JURY NOT A JUDGE that there was a crime. But trying to release the fish, after being intimidated by an armed government agent isn't proof of anything. Expecially considering the abysmal record of government agents under oath.
As a warden myself. I don’t like to wasted seized fish or game. It has to be donated or destroyed. In some instances, where it is hot outside and we will not be able to get the fish somewhere to donate in time, it will be destroyed. You must remember, we are few and far between, and cover hundreds to thousands of miles.
Redfish have a slot limit in Florida. Anything shorter than 18" or longer than 27" must be thrown back. The rule is in place so there's always good numbers of breeding stock. And slot limits also work to make sure fish aren't selectively bred smaller and smaller if there was just a minimum size limit.
So that fish was too big? We got some salmon laws "kinda" like that here in michigan, not that strict though, you can keep 5 fish but no more then 3 can be 15+ inches. I want to know what kinda fish that was, and what the problem was, if someone could fill me in please.
It's only a waste if you view the fish as food for humans above all else. Returning the dead fish to the water keeps the biomass in the ecosystem at least. Instead of trashing the officer, why don't we trash the clown that tried to keep a short fish?
oakland002 a bank robber in comparison with a recreational fishermen trying to feed him self or his family lol try again the officer is a mind controlled goof
+doug delmonico - I doubt that man's ability to feed himself and his family hinged on whether he could keep that short redfish. The angler is the goof here. The officer is just doing his job, following policy, but I still think it's the correct move unless you are ignorant enough to think that the sole purpose of fish is for human consumption. Every time a human takes a fish out of the water they are harming the ecosystem because that biomass/energy does not cycle back in the natural way. Putting the dead fish back is better for the ecosystem than letting that clown cook it up or even give it to a soup kitchen. Fish and animals do not exist solely for human consumption.
Poaching and not abiding by the slot size is two different things in my opinion. I have accidentally kept undersized fish before despite the fact I was trying to comply with the law. Alot of time the law, it's not so clear. It happens, so don't throw a dude under the bus without knowing all the facts. And fyi, I have a lifetime fishing license in my state of Missouri and I do my best to fully comply with the fishing laws.
Shane Bryant slot limit on reds and snook and lots of snappers and groupers. Cause of assholes who want to keep every fish they catch. Too small or not. Eat what you can. Let the rest go. They are much better fresh. And yes they should donate it, just not to the ass that caught it
Most state game wardens are deputy federal agents of national fish and game. At least in CT they are and I've heard of many other places the same thing. I've had one encounter with a fish and game officer. Trout opening day 2018. It was a spot not many know of, and me and my friend went got some drinks and snacks for the day, scouted a couple spots and started to setup our stuff at this spot. Didn't know it had to be 6 sharp to start. We started a few minutes before 6 and each got a $154 ticket for "fishing out of season".
Maybe he should have cut the fish up quick. Wasnt the fish only 1/2 in off? Yeah cut the head and tail off and theres no way to verify that 1/2 in. IDK maybe that would have made it worse bt theres just no way to verufy if the head was thrown away in the water.
After reading a bunch of comments here I noticed no one asked if there was an open soup kitchen anywhere close, or how much time would it take the officer to stop his day and go to the soup kitchen. I would think it would be a big waste of time to stop everything the officer was doing to donate 1 fish. Returning the fish to the water did not waste the fish it just just let nature reap the benefits and not the poacher.
maybe the fed officer didn't have a bucket and didn't want it inside of his suv or laying free in his suv/truck all day. also, the fish didn't go to waste. it became part of the cycle of life. i don't think having him throw it back was that crazy. but notice the guy says "the regular game guys take the fish" (4:10) so it seems like he's been in this position before, but the fed gave the guy a warning anyway (4:17) - but he should've been cited. as a separate issue: maybe the fed is required to write him up if he confiscated it, so instead he gave him a warning and didn't confiscate (ie. the fed can't show up back at the office with confiscated fish that don't correspond to a citation)
tips for those trying to revive a fish, don't swish it forwards and backwards. Doing this will actually heighten the chances of death for the future and I mean like within a day to a week
Sure, but consider how many times a fish with size limits is gut hooked and because it’s undersized has to be released despite the fact we know it’s going die. It always seems like a waste. But we don’t get to keep it or donate it. We are required to return it regardless of outcome.
Good guy, hooking up the other guy. Yeah It really doesn't make sense to throw back an already dead fish. But if you got to keep it,said angler would be more likely to do it again. Now he knows there's no point on keeping undersized fish. I hated it We'd fish for fluke up here in NJ out manasquan inlet. The size would be 18 I'd catch 50 17.5 not even joking on a outing sometimes not getting a keeper. It's crazy how they seem to always have you a half inch short with every year.
that was not anyones point they were saying TAKE it from the poacher so he learns his lesson but give it to a soup kitchen as to not allow the fish to go to waste...a1 listening skills you have
I have seen fish confiscated and then the officer gives it to someone in the area who was fishing with a permit to possess so the animal is not wasted. What a waste of a fish.
Love that area down there!!! My Aunt and Uncle live over the bridge in Cape Coral (lots of freshwater canals with TONS of largemouth) and I head over that drive in Sanibel anytime I’m visiting. Caught my first baby tarpon on the fly along that road. Those culverts are dinner conveyor belts for snook, reds and everything else. If your ever down there again, try the Island Cow for grub....delicious!!!!!
He probably didn’t have a way to transport the fish, like a cooler or something. If he had to drive around with a fish in a plastic bag all day, under the Florida sun, by the time his shift ended the fish would have spoiled. And it’s hardly a waste. It’s not like it’s an Atlantic sturgeon or anything endangered.
That is one of my favorite places to fish. Elias if you ever go back there use a small suspending xrap and work it aggressively. I always catch a few snook and jacks there each time I go.
Lance Cobb in my area in the north , they’ll come by to your house if they receive a tip of you poaching , and confiscate the animals / fish , and take what ever was used as evidence , gears, vehicle.. then give you a ticket , court stuffs , and revoke your license for a few years .
I don't know where you guys are from, but by me the Asians make the highest end fishing gear, respect the limits and support the local brands/community/shops. Most guys I've seen in person that keep shorts are usually old white guys on party boats.
@@robertsherry7029 I live in Tampa Bay and have seen first hand what the "shore fisherman" can do. Inshore fish and their ecosystems are much more vulnerable than deeper, pelagic species.
I've seen this happen too many times to count through my hands and Toes in the air I guarantee you I can count off every single time I've seen this happen. And I live in Cheraw South Carolina I've seen it on the rivers lakes streams and creeks you don't fuk with the game warden.
Elias are you going up around the Destin area before you go home? That's a great area to fish and has some of the best head boats there is too....Sweet Jody is my favorite. I've never kayaked around there but see lots of them all over....the surf is almost always like glass too so lots of opportunity to kayak offshore.
The bigger issue i see is that the federal government has no authority to even have/create a fish & wildlife service, but nobody gives enough of a shit to get involved and make an issue over the government overstepping its authority
Hey man don’t know how much longer your in Florida for but try launching your kayak in cockroach bay I know you said you were around the Tampa area so you may have already launched there but if not check it out great spot to fish
The individual officer can do what he wants documented of course. Some prefer the crabs, birds, etc to benefit from the corps then having the hassle with it in the trunk.
I was fishing from shore in NJ and fish & game walked up next to me and dumped a basket full of dead blackfish into the water. Watching them all float away in the current was painful. Such a waste. A lot were decent sized and would have been keepers not that many years ago. Im glad they were confiscated, but there needs to be a better way of dealing with these fish than throwing them to the crabs.
In Indiana it's illegal to throw a dying or dead fish back in the water.. I asked a game warden last year what I was supposed to do if I gullet hooked an undersized fish.. He told me to take a picture or video of the hook while it's still in the fish, and then I can either throw the fish away in the trash or eat it..
Not waste. The dead fish is returned to the eco-system to be consumed by the natural resources (birds, alligators, snakes, etc.).Plus, the actual fish does not have to be taken as evidence. Also, Illegally harvested fish and wildlife are considered contraband under Florida law and are subject to seizure. However, the disposition of the fish and wildlife are often returned back to the resource or at times, donated - often to a church, homeless shelter, for consumption. Read Florida Statute: 379.33Photographic evidence of illegally taken wildlife, freshwater fish, and saltwater fish.-In any prosecution for a violation of this chapter, any other chapter, or rules of the commission, a photograph of illegally taken wildlife, freshwater fish, or saltwater fish may be deemed competent evidence of such property and may be admissible in the prosecution to the same extent as if such wildlife, freshwater fish, or saltwater fish were introduced as evidence. Such photograph shall bear a written description of the wildlife, freshwater fish, or saltwater fish alleged to have been illegally taken, the name of the violator, the location where the alleged illegal taking occurred, the name of the investigating law enforcement officer, the date the photograph was taken, and the name of the photographer. Such writing shall be made under oath by the investigating law enforcement officer, and the photograph shall be identified by the signature of the photographer..........The photograph is sufficient for prosecution for Florida's fish and game laws. Very odd, the fish is the evidence. He was nice enough to let the guy try to release it but being dead it was no go. Guess he didn't want to bother going to court. In my state, if you have a dead short fish, you'll see it frozen in the court room right before the judge fines you $250.
oceannavagator
Gold prospecting with metal detector
oceannavagator he has a camera on him so there is visual proof he was undersize. These poaching tickets are rarely overturned in Florida
So were you actually fishing or just being nosey?
I mean watch the entire vid you'll see him fishing
Did he watch the whole video ?
You think he magically knew the guy was there keeping a over slot fish?
how is a fish illegal? is it endangered?
Redfish have a slot limit in Florida. Anything shorter than 18" or longer than 27" must be thrown back. The rule is in place so there's always good numbers of breeding stock. And slot limits also work to make sure fish aren't selectively bred smaller and smaller if there was just a minimum size limit.
I’ve been to that exact spot fishing before, I knew even before reading the description, sanibel Florida
Agree, it’s like saying let a bank robber go free , since he’ll end up using to stolen money to help the economy.
oakland002 a bank robber in comparison with a recreational fishermen trying to feed him self or his family lol try again the officer is a mind controlled goof
Mark Mondrinos just doing his job is what the the nazis used to justify their behaviour.
+doug delmonico - not surprised to see trolling on a fishing channel but you'll have to do better than that to get any bites!
Hey im from tampa where is this fishing spot??
I can't stand poachers but half a inch off, dude just let him have it, not like he has ten 12inch fish
funy part is if you listen the fish was TOO BIG guy said if its over 27 its illegal it must be like a breeding thing
It was too big, not too small. It’s to keep the population up and running
And yes they should donate it, just not to the ass that caught it
Slot fish
Most state game wardens are deputy federal agents of national fish and game. At least in CT they are and I've heard of many other places the same thing. I've had one encounter with a fish and game officer. Trout opening day 2018. It was a spot not many know of, and me and my friend went got some drinks and snacks for the day, scouted a couple spots and started to setup our stuff at this spot. Didn't know it had to be 6 sharp to start. We started a few minutes before 6 and each got a $154 ticket for "fishing out of season".
gottem. know the place you are fishing.
Maybe he should have cut the fish up quick. Wasnt the fish only 1/2 in off? Yeah cut the head and tail off and theres no way to verify that 1/2 in. IDK maybe that would have made it worse bt theres just no way to verufy if the head was thrown away in the water.
They'd give him hell and a ticket.
Fish must be kept in whole condition while fishing and traveling home from fishing. Doing that would get him in even more trouble.
@@SSHitMan Ive never heard that directly for fish so i didnt put it, but i definitely believe it.
So it was an over-slot redfish?
Dude, that was a sweet spot to catch a good variety. I need to go down to Florida for a few weeks and venture around.
maybe the fed officer didn't have a bucket and didn't want it inside of his suv or laying free in his suv/truck all day. also, the fish didn't go to waste. it became part of the cycle of life. i don't think having him throw it back was that crazy.
but notice the guy says "the regular game guys take the fish" (4:10) so it seems like he's been in this position before, but the fed gave the guy a warning anyway (4:17) - but he should've been cited.
as a separate issue: maybe the fed is required to write him up if he confiscated it, so instead he gave him a warning and didn't confiscate (ie. the fed can't show up back at the office with confiscated fish that don't correspond to a citation)
No excuses, put poachers in jail ! I live in Fort Myers, only been checked 2x in 14 yrs. Not enough enforcement out there.
Hooked into a 40+ inch snook at that park back in August. Pretty nice for kayaking and canoeing
I'm not a salt water fisherman. What were all those fish schooling around?
tips for those trying to revive a fish, don't swish it forwards and backwards. Doing this will actually heighten the chances of death for the future and I mean like within a day to a week
Tighten that drag buddy !!
Fine him , let it be the most expensive meal he's had in a long time .
Forcing one to discard it seems silly
Glad someone with some sense posted. Poacher shouldn’t have been able to keep it obviously but the fish shouldn’t have been wasted
What's "wasted"?
Sure, but consider how many times a fish with size limits is gut hooked and because it’s undersized has to be released despite the fact we know it’s going die. It always seems like a waste. But we don’t get to keep it or donate it. We are required to return it regardless of outcome.
He shouldn’t of had it in the first place, that’s the point.
Not really wasted. Its just food for a shark or crabs or something now.
Yea donate to soup kitchen.... you know those officers are having some nice cookouts. JK glad they're out there doing their jobs
I don't feel sorry for people who don't follow the rules anymore. I have seen this happen way to much.
FWC don't play in Florida, I seen poachers get caught multiple time and they always force them to throw it back dead or alive. Thank you #FWC
Funny that you’ve said they’ve been caught multiple times , guess the fine wasn’t that bad that they’re back daily just to get caught red handed
Idk what cops you’ve seen catch poachers but in my area they donate anything that’s under size to soup kitchens or family’s in need
Lance Cobb in my area in the north , they’ll come by to your house if they receive a tip of you poaching , and confiscate the animals / fish , and take what ever was used as evidence , gears, vehicle.. then give you a ticket , court stuffs , and revoke your license for a few years .
I hate poachers. Fish legally or dont fish at all
RepublicForever 94 yeah , that's why I don't understand some of the reply on here , it's like a double standard
florida is really strict I wish the north was like this in my state the Asians line the rocks and break size limits all day
joe wymn tell me about it I know just what your talking about
Where I’m from it’s the whites. Wish those damn whites would play by the rules.
joe wymn I guess I’m not the only one that notices it
I don't know where you guys are from, but by me the Asians make the highest end fishing gear, respect the limits and support the local brands/community/shops. Most guys I've seen in person that keep shorts are usually old white guys on party boats.
joe wymn white n black folks here, seen some of the whitest dudes take overlimits of dink smallmouth bass
Mans neck almost did a full 180
8:34 when a fish reads you your rights.
Seriously directly on an add....
Smash the poachers every last time please. Save our fisheries!!
Goddamn right
Yes because the little guy with a fishing pole is the reason for the fisheries being in trouble not giant commercial conglomerates.
@@robertsherry7029 I live in Tampa Bay and have seen first hand what the "shore fisherman" can do. Inshore fish and their ecosystems are much more vulnerable than deeper, pelagic species.
Nice place ,where???
In canada they take all your gear, your truck and boat if you have one.
They do that in Maryland also.
I've seen this happen too many times to count through my hands and Toes in the air I guarantee you I can count off every single time I've seen this happen. And I live in Cheraw South Carolina I've seen it on the rivers lakes streams and creeks you don't fuk with the game warden.
What kind of fish was it that he got caught with?
Red Drum. Aka Redfish.
🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂 all y'all was scared when the man was there , ain't hear nothing for the first few minutes while he was there 😂😂🤣😂😂
Mike Gray Not me I love talking some shit!!!! I know my rights
They were too busy dippin’, and if they talk they can’t overhear what’s going on. Fact it up!
That guy really didn’t want to let go of that fish ! Probably was hoping the officer would leave if he took his sweet time
Elias are you going up around the Destin area before you go home? That's a great area to fish and has some of the best head boats there is too....Sweet Jody is my favorite. I've never kayaked around there but see lots of them all over....the surf is almost always like glass too so lots of opportunity to kayak offshore.
Bill Bussler , I live near Destin. We also have some pretty good bay charters too.
Do you fish with Ray Romano
I'm proud of their out there catching poachers! I hope they fine Big Time! 10 Stars!🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 For all of them who is enforcing the law!
The bigger issue i see is that the federal government has no authority to even have/create a fish & wildlife service, but nobody gives enough of a shit to get involved and make an issue over the government overstepping its authority
@BP Gnosis sadly that makes no sense even as an attempt at justification
For the record, in Australia you get a big fine, they can confiscate your boat, if fish caught from the boat, your car and all your fishing gear...🙁
Here in Virginia they confiscate and freeze until after the court date then "disposed of" whatever that means
The fishermen with illegal catches are everywhere!
Here they often take smaller fish than the legal size!
Realwobbler soon you won't have any mature fish to breed. 👍
What kind of plastics did you give to that fellow angler?
My own brand
EliasVFishing you sell them?
Those big reds are bloody anyways, not sure why he kept it. The FWC normally does donate the fish.
Where in sanibel you fishing
Enjoyed the vid! Has anyone ever told you that you sound like Ray Romano?
crab food that sucks i would think there are plenty of hungry people around somewhere
He should have remembered to bring his fish stretcher. Theses idiots are why we have stricter rules and regulations.
Just the facts!
