If you ban burning the flag as a form of protest but allow the burning of one for disposal according to the flag code then you are banning protest, which the flag represents our right to do. Freedom is complicated.
They wouldn't care. They'd laugh at you and me. I learned all this back in my boy scout days. I always remembered that one thing, about disposing of an old flag properly. I know how, but most these days think it's silly to make ceremony for it.
Since you guys collect them and dispose of them properly you may want to let a local boy scout troop in your area know so they can also join you and get the knowledge from us veterans. Just a thought.
When i was a scout many years ago the local vets would let us help dispose of the flags, and taught us the significance of the ritual, its a great way to share patriotic duties and to keep the American youth informed

A few years ago, I went into a Walmart super-center. Almost all of them have the American flag hung vertically at their’ entrances. On one side of this particular Walmart, the vertical display of the flag was facing the wrong direction. Like, the blue union stars side was on the right side of my view, instead of to the left. I requested to speak with the store manager (got the assistant customer service manager) and I pointed out the correct way the flag should be displayed. I asked for his commitment that the store have a crew on one of their scissor lift adjust its orientation. He told me that it doesn’t matter. He didn’t just make me feel that way… he literally told me no one cares and he is not going to waste company time and resources to adjust something that has been that way since the store opened. And besides, it was completely out of his control… more like, not part of his duties as a manager nor is it a duty of any of his employees so he is not going to spend any time fixing it. I wound up calling Walmart headquarters and explained what happened. I returned that Walmart approximately 30 days later and found that the flag was adjusted properly.

My grandson took part in a flag ceremony when he was a Cub Scout. His grandfather was so proud he had his picture put in the paper. You can't really blame some people who are not informed. When I see a flag at half staff, it makes me sad because I know what it means . God bless the U. S. of A.
My rules of the American flag are as long as it's still waves wether it's torn, dirty, blood, or dirt on it, I still stand and or salute to it no mater what. As long as our flag is still there I still respect it but people don't know how to respect it like I do and I'm only 18 years old.

@Crygo I agree with just about everything you said. Schools do try to make a lot of rules. In an environment where you have a lot of kids going thru puberty and whatnot, it can get a little wild. I can see the point there, remove all items of controversy rather than allowing them in.
You can salute it, then find the owner of that torn flag and teach them how to respect it! A tattered flag shows disrespect, always has, always will. The only exception is during war when the flag that needs to be replaced has no replacement due to logistics ...As an old Girl Scout, we learned the rules and I still abide them out of respect for what our flag stands for.
There is a very old American flag on a closed down business in my area. Its in really bad shape. Its shredded. I really wanna take it down but im afraid i will get in trouble for trespassing.

But breaking any of these rules is not illegal. Even burning a flag is not illegal in the U.S.. I am glad that is so because some of these "rules" could be interpreted wrong. Letting the flag touch the ground does not necessarily mean you are disrespecting it. Could be a short person is carrying a flag to big for him, or with to short of pole. Could be lot's of reasons. If these rules were law, it would be the biggest disrespect of the flag, because it would take away more of our freedoms. To me the flag also represents the freedom of our country. In other countries that don't have many freedoms, some of these rules are crimes and are against the law.
Didn't think of that, but you're right. That's why to me some of these "rules" go a little over board. Take children for example. If a child was handling the flag, they could do all sorts of things wrong and break the rules even if unintentionally. Are we then suppose to say children aren't allowed to handle a flag ? I mean where does it stop ? Also, regarding a toy flag that a child might have and abuse, the guy says it's not a toy, it's still a real flag. Well, ok, but I didn't know that and I'm 58, so many children certainly wouldn't know it. Expecting parents to make their children all treat a toy flag properly is a bit much. Also what if someone breaks a flag rule, (intentionally or not ) but it was in the privacy of his home and was by himself ? To me, breaking one of these rules in public would be much worse. Because now you are offending others. So there are many other things to consider than just rules.

I've even heard some of them referred to a 'Flag Nazis', because they take it so seriously that they'd overturn our Constitutional rights to freedom of expression, as well as property rights, all due to worshipping a piece of cloth. Yes, that's the other side of the coin. There are people on both sides. Some are as you said like "Flag Nazi's" that take the flag maybe to seriously and get offended easily with incorrect flag protocol. . Others consider it a piece of cloth. I'm kind of in between. Since the flag is a symbol of our country, I consider it more than just a piece of cloth. It has meaning. But I wouldn't worry about such things as folding it incorrectly unless doing so out in public . And only then, so as not to offend others.

I was recently given a American flag to put on my house. On the package, it said you have to take the flag down at sunset. You also have to bring it in if it rains or snows. I didn’t know about those rules. 😳
I remembered burning flags in boy scouts and I remember feeling the amount of respect we had for that flag. We had a long speech about what that flag done for us as we properly disposed of the worn tattered flags. To this day it sticks to me as I see all of these kids stepping on our flag, hanging it upside down, and burning the flag. It's one thing to burn a flag if they are worn so long as it is being properly disposed of and treated with respect, it's another to fucking burn it like it's a fucking blanket. Even when I was in boy scouts and really had no idea at the time the amount of respect that goes toward our flag, I was quiet, and emotional, feeling the spirit that this flag carries.
I agree, I really enjoyed learning about that in boy scouts also. However now that I am older and have been educated more in the history of this country, I understand that sometimes it is the right thing to do to take a knee for the flag.

I appreciate what y'all do for the honorable flag of the nation. I do have a few questions: are there any rules on flag washing or cleaning? How do I most respectfully clean or fix a flag? If a flag is torn (by wear and tear by the wind) is it respectful to repair it, or is it better to just let nature take it's course and eventually cremate it?
I learned it all when I was a Boy Scout in Massapequa. Since i bought my house in 1971, the flag has been flown from my 25 ft. Pole 24 hours every day. Now I added LED spotlight to replace the tungsten light. The only time I leave the flag off the poll is during heavy winds. But the Scouts are being destroyed.
I wish more people thought like these guys. We always flew the flag where I worked. One of the guys was a Marine and he saw to it that the flag was treated properly and replaced when needed. He also made sure the POW-MIA flag flew right beneath it. In my 15 years as a Boy Scout leader, I always taught respect for the flag.

I bought a bunch of 4th of July decorations during the 4th. I went to the Dollar Tree and got these cheap American Flags that came with a plastic pole and I hung them up on each side of my house. Here it is, November now, and these flags are falling apart. Even though these flags only cost a dollar, they are extremely cheaply made, would I still take them down to my local VFW and have them properly dispose them? Or would they send me away thinking that I was crazy for suggesting they would dispose of these cheap flags? I definitely don't want to leave them hanging up
If I'm correct, when disposing of a flag you're supposed to cut out the blue field so that it's separate from the 13 stripes. At this point, since it no longer forms a flag, it's to be burned.

My fiance and I we're driving and they seen an American flag on the right side of a truck and asked why it was backwards. I told them it wasn't backwards. They didn't understand what I meant so I told them the American flag wasn't supposed to be seen retreating. That seeing the flag from our point of view it was correct. They didn't know this.
Our poor beautiful flag. It saddened me beyond belief seeing it flown proudly alongside the traitors' battle flag on the 6th, smashing windows and using the pole to bludgeon officers defending our great nation. It deserves better, and we must give it better.

what about trucks that display them improperly in the bed or off the bumper? they are supposed to be from a window or the front fender as far as I know, and what about if they touch dirt/water in the bed of the truck?
It just kind of ticks me off sometimes when I see people fly any kind of flag when it's tore up, even if it's not an American flag. The minutes my flag starts to get rips on it, I get a new flag. Some people just keep their flags flying when it's all tore up, when it rains a whole lot and wipes the coloring of the flag and all that. But yes, I gotta be fair though, we do have freedom of speech and people are going to do those kinds of things no matter what. But I'm just voicing my opinion. I just think it's kind of stupid when people fly tore up or warn out flags. I usually fly and American flag on the back of my truck along with a Don't Tread On Me flag, but I do not fly them when they're losing their color from so much rain, getting ripped up, or anything like that.
Take it as a sign you live in a free country & rejoice. My 'made in China' flag is a little worse for wear, but still has some life left in it. At least it's recognizable as an American flag. Unless the flag-worshiping, Flag Nazis want to buy me a new one, I will not prematurely take it down. . Dee Cee - there are flag recycling centers that will take care of the Nylon for you. There are other ways to "respectfully" retire an American flag than just burning. Next time buy a flag that isn't made in China if you're such great Lee Greenwood quoting Patriot.

My school: (Ignores every rule) Seriously tho my school used to fly a severely torn flag (like absolutely unrecognisable) for years and years until some community member felt bad and donated a new one.
Once when I was about 12 or 13 I guess. I used to make money dumpster diving in SO CA for recyclable cans bottles etc. So one day I open a dumpster tgat was on one of my route and found a LOT like 25 Full size American flags. Some where litely torn on the edges most where just faded and old. Had to be at least 25 . the dumpster was used by a property manager place which managed like 40 property's in town. So my hues is many property's had poles with flags. And those where torn and worn so someone was sent out to replace them. And the old flags went to the dumpster. I spent 45 min digging them out just to find only 1 bag of trash had 10 soda cans in it. I was pisst as I put them all back... Cussing the whole time.
Every Community has proper-disposal of flag resources. The city Administration should know. Examples are the Elks Lodge (BPOE), American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Scouts. Our flag should be in good repair, it represents our nation, and the men who died for it - our freedom
The original flag code has nothing in it saying that if it touches the ground it has to be burned. There is nothing in the flag code saying that it can’t touch the ground. If a flag touches the ground you should just pick it up as soon as possible.
I donate my old flag to the salvation arm yearly. It was suggested by them for me to do so. So , I donate clothes and stuff along with my old flag. I know they will do the right thing with it ,with it with respect.

had a flag for one year had high wind's tore it up was going to buy a new one as soon as i could three day's later came home the old flag was in between my door's someone put a new one up, i folded it up triangle and it's going to my local VFW for proper disposal , thank you who ever you are , and god bless you and America

I get that it's disrespect but I kind of like that old tattered look on a flag. It makes me think that Flags been through some stuff. And if that reflects on our country than that means our country has been through some stuff. When you see a rip we've gone through a war when you see a smudge we've hit rock bottom... but the fact that that flag is still standing throughout all that wear and tear... the fact that that country is still there at its peak even though it's been through so much... It just gives me courage. It gives me the will to fight for my country. To know that it's been through all of this and the other Still Standing Tall and proud. When i was a scout many years ago the local vets would let us help dispose of the flags, and taught us the significance of the ritual, its a great way to share patriotic duties and to keep the American youth informed
You could also contact a local fire dept. They can collect the damaged flags for you.

A few years ago, I went into a Walmart super-center. Almost all of them have the American flag hung vertically at their’ entrances.
On one side of this particular Walmart, the vertical display of the flag was facing the wrong direction. Like, the blue union stars side was on the right side of my view, instead of to the left.
I requested to speak with the store manager (got the assistant customer service manager) and I pointed out the correct way the flag should be displayed. I asked for his commitment that the store have a crew on one of their scissor lift adjust its orientation.
He told me that it doesn’t matter. He didn’t just make me feel that way… he literally told me no one cares and he is not going to waste company time and resources to adjust something that has been that way since the store opened. And besides, it was completely out of his control… more like, not part of his duties as a manager nor is it a duty of any of his employees so he is not going to spend any time fixing it.
I wound up calling Walmart headquarters and explained what happened.
I returned that Walmart approximately 30 days later and found that the flag was adjusted properly.

My grandson took part in a flag ceremony when he was a Cub Scout. His grandfather was so proud he had his picture put in the paper. You can't really blame some people who are not informed. When I see a flag at half staff, it makes me sad because I know what it means . God bless the U. S. of A.

My rules of the American flag are as long as it's still waves wether it's torn, dirty, blood, or dirt on it, I still stand and or salute to it no mater what. As long as our flag is still there I still respect it but people don't know how to respect it like I do and I'm only 18 years old.

@Crygo I agree with just about everything you said. Schools do try to make a lot of rules. In an environment where you have a lot of kids going thru puberty and whatnot, it can get a little wild. I can see the point there, remove all items of controversy rather than allowing them in.
You can salute it, then find the owner of that torn flag and teach them how to respect it! A tattered flag shows disrespect, always has, always will. But breaking any of these rules is not illegal. Even burning a flag is not illegal in the U.S.. I am glad that is so because some of these "rules" could be interpreted wrong. Letting the flag touch the ground does not necessarily mean you are disrespecting it. Could be a short person is carrying a flag to big for him, or with to short of pole. Could be lot's of reasons. If these rules were law, it would be the biggest disrespect of the flag, because it would take away more of our freedoms. To me the flag also represents the freedom of our country. In other countries that don't have many freedoms, some of these rules are crimes and are against the law.

Didn't think of that, but you're right. That's why to me some of these "rules" go a little over board. Take children for example. If a child was handling the flag, they could do all sorts of things wrong and break the rules even if unintentionally. Are we then suppose to say children aren't allowed to handle a flag ?
I mean where does it stop ? Also, regarding a toy flag that a child might have and abuse, the guy says it's not a toy, it's still a real flag. Well, ok, but I didn't know that and I'm 58, so many children certainly wouldn't know it. Expecting parents to make their children all treat a toy flag properly is a bit much.
Also what if someone breaks a flag rule, (intentionally or not ) but it was in the privacy of his home and was by himself ? To me, breaking one of these rules in public would be much worse. Because now you are offending others. So there are many other things to consider than just rules.

Yes, that's the other side of the coin. There are people on both sides. Some are as you said like "Flag Nazi's" that take the flag maybe to seriously and get offended easily with incorrect flag protocol. . Others consider it a piece of cloth. I'm kind of in between. Since the flag is a symbol of our country, I consider it more than just a piece of cloth. It has meaning. I was recently given a American flag to put on my house. On the package, it said you have to take the flag down at sunset. You also have to bring it in if it rains or snows. I didn’t know about those rules. 😳

I remembered burning flags in boy scouts and I remember feeling the amount of respect we had for that flag. We had a long speech about what that flag done for us as we properly disposed of the worn tattered flags. To this day it sticks to me as I see all of these kids stepping on our flag, hanging it upside down, and burning the flag. It's one thing to burn a flag if they are worn so long as it is being properly disposed of and treated with respect, it's another to fucking burn it like it's a fucking blanket. Even when I was in boy scouts and really had no idea at the time the amount of respect that goes toward our flag, I was quiet, and emotional, feeling the spirit that this flag carries.
I agree, I really enjoyed learning about that in boy scouts also. However now that I am older and have been educated more in the history of this country, I understand that sometimes it is the right thing to do to take a knee for the flag.

I appreciate what y'all do for the honorable flag of the nation. I do have a few questions: are there any rules on flag washing or cleaning? How do I most respectfully clean or fix a flag? If a flag is torn (by wear and tear by the wind) is it respectful to repair it, or is it better to just let nature take it's course and eventually cremate it?
I think once it is damaged, the good thing is to hold a ceremony and incinerate it, like the scouts.

I learned it all when I was a Boy Scout in Massapequa. Since i bought my house in 1971, the flag has been flown from my 25 ft. Pole 24 hours every day. Now I added LED spotlight to replace the tungsten light. The only time I leave the flag off the poll is during heavy winds. But the Scouts are being destroyed.

I wish more people thought like these guys. We always flew the flag where I worked. One of the guys was a Marine and he saw to it that the flag was treated properly and replaced when needed. He also made sure the POW-MIA flag flew right beneath it. In my 15 years as a Boy Scout leader, I always taught respect for the flag.

I bought a bunch of 4th of July decorations during the 4th. I went to the Dollar Tree and got these cheap American Flags that came with a plastic pole and I hung them up on each side of my house. Here it is, November now, and these flags are falling apart. Even though these flags only cost a dollar, they are extremely cheaply made, would I still take them down to my local VFW and have them properly dispose them? Or would they send me away thinking that I was crazy for suggesting they would dispose of these cheap flags? I definitely don't want to leave them hanging up
If I'm correct, when disposing of a flag you're supposed to cut out the blue field so that it's separate from the 13 stripes. At this point, since it no longer forms a flag, it's to be burned.

My fiance and I we're driving and they seen an American flag on the right side of a truck and asked why it was backwards. I told them it wasn't backwards. They didn't understand what I meant so I told them the American flag wasn't supposed to be seen retreating. That seeing the flag from our point of view it was correct. They didn't know this.

It just kind of ticks me off sometimes when I see people fly any kind of flag when it's tore up, even if it's not an American flag. The minutes my flag starts to get rips on it, I get a new flag. Some people just keep their flags flying when it's all tore up, when it rains a whole lot and wipes the coloring of the flag and all that. But yes, I gotta be fair though, we do have freedom of speech and people are going to do those kinds of things no matter what. But I'm just voicing my opinion. I just think it's kind of stupid when people fly tore up or warn out flags. I usually fly and American flag on the back of my truck along with a Don't Tread On Me flag, but I do not fly them when they're losing their color from so much rain, getting ripped up, or anything like that.

Seriously tho my school used to fly a severely torn flag (like absolutely unrecognisable) for years and years until some community member felt bad and donated a new one.
Once when I was about 12 or 13 I guess. I used to make money dumpster diving in SO CA for recyclable cans bottles etc. So one day I open a dumpster tgat was on one of my route and found a LOT like 25 Full size American flags. Some where litely torn on the edges most where just faded and old. Had to be at least 25 . the dumpster was used by a property manager place which managed like 40 property's in town. So my hues is many property's had poles with flags. And those where torn and worn so someone was sent out to replace them. And the old flags went to the dumpster. I spent 45 min digging them out just to find only 1 bag of trash had 10 soda cans in it. I was pisst as I put them all back... Cussing the whole time.

Every Community has proper-disposal of flag resources. The city Administration should know. Examples are the Elks Lodge (BPOE), American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Scouts. Our flag should be in good repair, it represents our nation, and the men who died for it - our freedom

The original flag code has nothing in it saying that if it touches the ground it has to be burned. There is nothing in the flag code saying that it can’t touch the ground. If a flag touches the ground you should just pick it up as soon as possible.

I get that it's disrespect but I kind of like that old tattered look on a flag. It makes me think that Flags been through some stuff. And if that reflects on our country than that means our country has been through some stuff. When you see a rip we've gone through a war when you see a smudge we've hit rock bottom... but the fact that that flag is still standing throughout all that wear and tear... the fact that that country is still there at its peak even though it's been through so much... It just gives me courage. It gives me the will to fight for my country. To know that it's been through all of this and the other Still Standing Tall and proud. It just makes me think I could be missing an arm and a leg and yet I'm still going to protect this country. If our flag and country can take a tear right through its middle so can I.

Theres no problem with kids playing on the flag tho. they're just having fun
I know a torn flag is a bad thing. But I look at a torn american flag as its still standing or that it will never give up. But thats me I think keeping a torn american flag shows its spirit to still fly
