I enjoy your videos very much and really like the various project you do. I had purchased similar kit few months ago and it being my first battery pack I was assembling, wish you made this video back then but I managed. I wish I had easier access to 18650 cells to make more!
Amazing how this guy so smart he can assemble Marita battery pack with no instructions. I bet when he visits different countries he doesn't need to ask for directions.
A word of advice to viewers of this. Whilst it is perfectly safe to use ex laptop batteries of 2.2Ah capacity in these, be aware that they often will NOT run more powerful devices such as cordless angle grinders and impact drills. The BMS puts a block on them as their open circuit voltage gets pulled too low under load ... I know because I have several of these. However, it would appear that using ex Dyson and similar brushless devices that require high starting and run currents resolves the problem. So cannibalising two or three non operational, genuine, original batteries from ANY drill manufacturer may well provide sufficient working, but low on charge, 18650 cells to build one that works well. Interestingly, ONLY my angle grinder and impact drills do not work with the batteries I've made from laptop cells. At LEAST six drills, some Makita, some generic but converted to run on LiIon batteries, ALL operate for quite some time on full load without problems. Just be careful of assuming they don't work when it may just be that the load current capability is just insufficient for some devices. In future, I shall be trying to obtain heavy duty cells from the sources already mentioned.
@@darkosvk if the individual cells are rated at 10A discharge that should be more than ample. Just remember: 1. Cells in parallel are cumulative for current 2. Cells in series are cumulative for volts, but NOT current 3. Series/parallel are cumulative for both So ... 3 sets of 3 cells in series will give a total pack of nine cells i.e. 3S3P so if each cell is 10A capable then the pack wiuld be a 12.6v (fully charged) at 3x10A or 12.6v 30A capable. This SHOULD be ample for all power tools including angle grinders and other high current demanding devices (most brushless motor devices seem to occupy this camp). Finally: DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES MIX CELLS OF DIFFERENT MAX CURRENT RATINGS! That's the most sure fire way of causing overheating and potential fires.
@@boblewis5558 Great explanation Bob and what combination would be in this particular battery case where we have 10 cells....5p2s? Does it mean than 50A?
@@darkosvk basically, yes BUT it is easy to get carried away here as the compact size and tight space don't lend themselves to good cooling so you wiuld need to include some pretty accurate and fast over temperature cut out. to run that level full time. The cells will soon start ti warm up with a 600 watt plus heating capability going on. It might be wisest to drain no more than 25-30A and even then you should keep a close eye on the temperature and more importantly the temp slope i.e. how fast the temp is rising as LiIon cells get thermal runaway VERY quickly. I'd focus on the extra capacity Ah wise rather than continuous high running current. Don't forget commercial 18/21v power tool batteries of 5s2p are typically only 6Ah rated and to get to 9Ah they become 5s3p in Makita, Bosch, Dewalt style packs. One thing these 12v packs are good for though is with a cheap eBay buck boost converter set for 21.5v output @0.5-1.0A to use as a recharge supply for those portable power tool batteries. An 18v3Ah battery (54Wh) can be fully recharged several times without problem from a 12.6v 15.4Ah (194Wh) battery (less the conversion losses of the buck/boost) and means such power tool batteries, even 9Ah can be given a full or partial recharge when away from mains power. Highly useful, especially if you want to also recharge the 12v batteries from your car (Do NOT charge directly from the alternator). You just change the output of the buck/boost to 12.6v and connect the input of that to the car. I've used this method a lot as it means you can recharge batteries on the job away from the car and when the 12.6v battery runs low you can just recharge it from the car battery/alternatir, while carrying on with the job some distance away.
@@boblewis5558 Safety first and I agree. If you have to analyze this particular battery case, what do we deal with? Following manufacture guide and assemble this pack with 3200Mah 10A cells what do we get at the end and would it be safe?

finally. there is a makita battery board with balancing out there. great.

That was a lot better kit than the last one. Previous one didn't have balancing for the cells and that is a dangerous thing.
Well, if you pair cells with same internal resistance and same charge/discharge rate - Battery pack can work without balancing.
