    That was amazing.
Best part is everyone is going one way and Evens is going the other way.
Funny story Johnson's engine room. Evens called for smoke. The office shouted back you know what that will do to my engines.
Everything going on he was worried about cleaning them after.

This video is fitting after the loss of James D Hornfischer. If you are interested in this battle and don't know you can read his books The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors. He's also written other battles in the Pacific. If you have read them then you know how good he was and how much we will miss him. Thank you for the video and hopefully we will get a USS Johnston in WoWS someday.

Sun Tsu already wrote that soldiers with no way out will fight beyond their normal capabilities. Thats why he recommended to leave the enemy a way to route from the battlefield. Its the same concept Caesar used to defeat Pompei. His veteran army was outnumbered 2:1 and cornered with their backs to the sea, so they fought like maniacs and slaughtered the senates legions instead of just getting captured. Its a fascinating, universal part of soldiers mentality.

The Japanese SHO-1, 2 & 3 plans were all very ambitious and required concise timing and co-ordination that would be difficult to achieve even with today's technology. The brave Men and ships of TAFFY 3 paid a huge price but achieved so much more than they should have. With Halsey off chasing the decoy simply for honour and glory condemn those fine sailors to their fate and they did not let anyone down. • @hi14993
    @hi14993 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Nice but I have a couple nitpicks:
    3:33 Taffy 3 consisted of 6 CVEs, 3 DDs, and 4 DEs
    3:46 2nd Fleet Force A consisted of 4 BBs, 6 CAs, 2 CLs, and 11 DDs
5:48 this quote is correct but attributed wrongly. This was said over the 1MC of Samuel B. Roberts as she broke off escort duties and began to line up a torpedo salvo on the Chokai. There is another one said by the captain of the Johnston that I think is even more badass. Although it was said when the ship was comissioned not during this battle. Quote "This is going to be a fighting ship. I intend to go in harm's way, and anyone who doesn't want to go along had better get off right now."
8:59 this order was intended for DDs at first. DEs were to follow behind and make a follow up torpedo attack. Samuel B. Roberts was the only DE to press the attack with everything she had. The other DEs backed off after firing all conventional ammunition and returned to screening the CVEs with smoke.
10:14 this is just wrong. Sure Hoel had sunk, but Heerman and Samuel B. Roberts were still fighting and at that time were in the middle of engaging Chikuma with everything plus the kitchen sink. they had fired all armor piercing, all high explosive, all flak AA, and all star shells(flares). Heerman was still firing at this moment. The exact time is debatable as different ship logs are off by slightly different times, but shortly after 0900 (around 0902ish) the Roberts took the blow that put her out of action.
tbh kinda disappointed that one of the messages to other ships in the area was left out. TF34 was supposedly blocking the San Bernadino Straight. Yet, here comes a massive Japanese force from that direction. Admiral Sprague asked "where is TF34?". As part of the key to deciphering messages there was a throwaway phrase used at the beginning and end of messages. On this day, the beginning was "turkey trots to water" and the end phrase was "the world wonders". Bull Halsey's staff in TF34 forgot to cut off the end of the message and read out "where is TF34? the world wonders". Hoo boy was he mad.

I absolutely love this and I think it highlights the enormous potential the game has in historical matchups or at least faction vs faction matches. I can’t, for the life of me, figure out why that’s not a thing. Japanese vs American, German v British etc. They could find away to make it balanced and even via tiers and types. It would add tremendous value to the game IMO. This is what I’ve always wanted from WoWs.

The part about the air attacks being ineffective is based on outdated scholarship….
And Kongo definitely never got any hits on Johnston; she wasn’t even shooting at anything at that point. Regardless of whether those hits came from Yamato, from cruisers, or both, none of them could have come from Kongo.

i would love to see the story 0f HMS Glowworm. One of the few victoria crosses recommended by the enemy, in this case the Hippers captain. Glowworm didn't survive but rammed the hipper doing enough damage to put her out of actions for a good period of time. there are pictures taken from the Hipper (3) showing the Glowworms desperate battle.

One can only imagine the carnage that the Japanese Center Force would have inflicted on the beachhead had Taffy 3 not put up such fierce resistance. The men of Taffy 3 truly saved the day.

There is a correlation between the presence of USS Johnston and USS Roberts on the sea floor and the present lack of Godzilla activity.
Unconfirmed reports will say that he is now afraid of the water and has disguised himself as a a small hill on okinawa.

The telling of the Battle of Leyte Gulf and the heroism of Taffy 3 is a great story… however the accompanying visuals are not up to snuff. Was the USS Ranger CV4 at Leyte Gulf? A part of Taffy 3? Even in the Pacific in October 1944? No, no and… yes. OK, she was in the Pacific but nowhere near the Philippines. She was recognizable by her six smoke stacks abaft of the island, 3 to port, 3 to starboard. Were light carriers part of Taffy 3? No. They operated with the main battle fleet, in this instance Task Force 38. They were distinctive and recognizable by the 4 stacks abaft of the island all on the starboard side. Light carriers were relatively long 600+ feet, rather sleek and fast, 30+ knots, as they were built on cruiser hulls. The Casablanca class carriers of Taffy 3 were shorter, somewhat stubby and slow, 19 knots and built from the keel up as carriers. The ships portrayed, both Japanese and American seem accurate enough except that some of them, particularly on the American side, simply weren’t there. Also, the speed of the ships in the video is waaaaaaay too fast. None of this is intended to diminish the effort of the makers to portray the incredible heroism of the men of Taffy 3. It’s just that it could have been so much better.

We’re using a game called “World of Warships” to produce these style of videos. True Escort Carriers are not in the game. So we’re using what we can that’s close enough to them, hence why Ranger appears in the video. Same when it comes to the American Destroyers all being destroyers and not Destroyer escorts, because there are no Destroyer escorts in World of Warships

Excellent video! The Japanese objective on that day was to disrupt the landings. They completely failed in completing their strategic purpose. Then failed to succeed in the tactical situation as well. On that day the US Navy fought like Samurai the Japanese leaders didn't.
