I managed to not own a PC when Homeworld was popular, but many of my viewers have been asking me to play it for years, so glad I'll finally be able to experience this and hopefully document the experience.

I still have the original disc to the first Homeworld. (lost the cd key though.) This is my all time most favorite game of all time. When I found out that this remastered edition was in the works I squealed and peed my pants!!! (true story). I cant wait to play this and relive some of my most enjoyable game moments.
I hope homeworld will catches the attention of RTS lovers, and make some tournaments that will be live streams.
I've a big command conquer and age of Empires fan and never have heard of this game until today.

If you look at the number of views of the videos thats been posted on here. The most seen video is only 65k. This make me think that not many is paying attention to Homeworld Remastered
I'm not sure I like the parallel they draw between the player and fleet command, to me it always felt like the action taking place was coordinated by the combined efforts of fleet command and fleet intelligence. I felt the "commander" aka the player character was not so much just one person, but a group effort. Something like, and I know it sounds weird, some sort of group consciousness. The commands you give, not so much your choice, but the result of an organic process of hierarchy that governs the fleet. I never felt like I am in command, but more as of an observer, taking part in the decision making. Perhaps I may be alone in this.

if they SOMEHOW manage to get that cataclysm code, and integrate it into remastered multiplayer, we would have 6 races to choose from. 7 if they integrate the raiders. and every single one of them is unique and fucking awesome! beast vs vaygr! kushan vs hiig! somtaaw vs taidan! those matches!
cataclysm was made with a different company (Naughty Dog) so maybe they may need to go through different channels to get the go ahead for it, however i agree that they need to remake it ! fighting a HD beast would be EPIC!

All jabs aside, this is a great game that deserves a lot more renown than it currently has, and it's easy for us to get excited about the series increasing notoriety. I'm just hoping it blows Starcraft out of the water. High hopes but hey, I can dream.
Hope the number of sold copies is high enough for them to consider HW3. I appreciate Shipbreakers though, but it's different.

Before the Khar Toba and the guidestone were found (which united them under the Daiamid council and the construction of the mothership following afterwards) there were warring Kiith clans on Kharak. The heresy wars being the biggest example.
I love and have loved homeworld since it came out, but this trailer just seems like it's pandering to attention starved plebs. I don't want a crappy bro-shooter style trailer with a "Sergent teaching the newbie" trope, I want beautiful music and voice acting.

I just don't want even a small amount of the bro-shooter crowd who can't play anything strategic, going to buy the game, play it for 30 minutes, realise it takes patience and thinking to play, take the game back and rate it down because it's not a fast game with pew pew noises and explosions

God I'm excited for this game. Been waiting to play a modern version for ages since the old ones never worked properly on any PC I've ever owned, especially Homeworld 2.
I remember when the game first came out. I was stationed in South Korea, and saw a fellow soldier playing it. He was on the third level, and when I heard Adagio for Strings on it, I immediately went out and bought a copy for myself.
I still have the original games, but went and bought it again on Steam as well.

Never before has a game left such an imprint on my memory like Homeworld did. The atmosphere, the soundtrack, the battle chatter everything was superlative!
Cataclysm or GTFO, you don't need the source code to re-make it, quit your lame excuses.
While they don't need the source code, it's gonna be a lot more work. As they would pretty much have to rebuild almost all assets from scratch.
But they have hinted a lil that they may end up doing it as a DLC, if remastered is a big enough success.

Thank you Gearbox for remastering two of the iconic games of my childhood. The game was lost to me for many years, but now thanks to you guys I can experience it again, and that makes me very happy!
For many years I have been talking about Homeworld with my friends, and how much we loved those games. I was afraid the series would be lost forever, but you guys made it alive and kicking again. Awesome.

This game took weeks of my life away. And I happily gave it. The story is epic. The gameplay is solid. Its one of those games we as the main group of gamers look back apon with fond memories. I look forward to giving even more time to this game. And hopefully you will to.
I liked Homeworld a lot but not it's limits. I was hoping you could jump your fleet to another Galaxy to survive or somewhere safe to rebuild while it makes it difficult for the enemy to find you.

They spent so much time on the textures and integrating the stupid HW:Complex mod that they didn't even update the render engine... And hardly touched the effects(They really do look copy pasted from HW2 huh?)

Clearly Rts is my favourite genre as I'm just not enjoying new games nowadays, even AAA"s, yet I enjoy even 'sub par' rts eg iron harvest or spellforce 3. Not massively enjoying act of aggression. Any other rts you guys would suggest?
I haven't played company of heroes yet. But not sure I'll like it as it looks like Dawn of War 2 which was pretty meh with no base building. Dow3 was just atrocious.
No more salvaging everything, collectors that simply "lick the sugar off" asteroids instead of consuming them, and support frigates that refuse a band-box of several units and have to be micromanaged... now, the first two are just differences, the 3rd needs a fix when possible :) I do appreciate the remaster and the effort it took, believe me I know that you can't keep everyone happy as a programmer, just my observations. Too, for all of us old players out there, might be good if they knew... it's a new beastie. Luckily, the original versions I already had still work, but I do admit... the eye candy on the remastered version is fetching!

I'm glad to see you guys spending time refurbishing these great games. At least while you're busy polishing someone else's game you shameful hacks won't have time to make another Duke Nukem or Colonial Marines. How do you guys manage to stand up straight and look your peers in the eye after making those games, by the way? I suppose if you have any sense of shame you'd just blush, stare at the floor and walk hurriedly past other developers.
I can see a future Homeworld 3 in which you can change the default plane of movement.
***** Ever read Ender's game? "The enemy's gate is down." In space, orientation is such an important factor. In HW your guns actually have to face the enemy to work.
If your entire fleet operates on a separate x-z plane, then your ships don't have to take time to rotate up/down. Less time wasted in ambushes. And your opponent would have to deal with the confusion. This would be the next stage of HW's 3D gameplay.

Cataclysm's source code is lost and not part of the series canon. Therefore there won't be a remastered version.

It's well known and explicitly stated both GearBox and BBI (original creators of Homeworld) and discussed to death by the Homeworld Community. A 5 second google search would but I guess doing that would be too much for someone like you.

I literally took down the CD jewel case from the shelf and it's in front of me as I watch this
I saw this game 16 years ago. Yet I never played it...shames me. Yet it still blew me away those years that you fought in full X/Y Axis. Long with the scale of the combat was far bigger than any of the other RTS at the time. So seeing this being brought back in a Remastered Mode tells you what Relic created was ahead of how to make a RTS right.
So if you enjoyed Homeworlds and haven't played Company of Heroes and Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War 1 (not the second. As it is completely different game). You'd enjoy them the same. As they are the right levels of challenging and rewarding if you pull off what are impossible odds.
While the graphics have been brought up to modern standards, the mechanics (at least in HW1) are a bastardization. No fuel, die rolls instead of bullet physics, tactics have been completely removed, formations simply don't work, corvettes behave like fighters, and getting units to do what you want them to do is an exercise in frustration.

one question gearbox, how much of the voice of the bentusi will we get? I know we lost Campbell Lane a good while ago, but im still hoping to hear the original voice of the bentusi in all his splendor when i start up my copy of the game tomorrow

All the positivity for this makes me so happy. I've been struggling with games lately as I've just not been able to find anything I like anymore. I played HW1 and 2 long ago So this really makes my day that the fan base for this fossil of a game is still so huge. So now if we can just get a Free Space remastered edition I would set.
So what is the core gameplay here? Like you find resources first and you take them than you build a ship and take enemy fleet in the sector but leave 1 enemy ship alive so you can gather more resources?

mazack00 Those lets players shouldn't affect your decision on buying this game. If you don't buy it, you'll truly miss out... again... like the first time people missed out on it.

***** I didn't miss out the first time. Unlike these poor scrubs, I was an avid computer fan when HW1 was released in 1999 and I managed to play it before it was labeled game of the year in 2000.

***** I still have my original non-game-of-the-year version. It has lore documents and lots of cool tidbits inside. So, I still own the greatest RTS ever (especially since they butchered the HW1 ambassador/generic fighter sound, filled the game with crap from the HW Complex mod, and tried to integrate a lot of random mechanics from HW2 like strike groups) I do hope that everyone gets to enjoy Homeworld, however, I disagree with a lot of the choices Gearbox has made, so they will not be having me as a customer for this product.

They chose this narrator for this video because the old narrator passed away. They will be using the original narrator for the games though.

I loved this game so much! Re-master looks OK, it just looks like they took the existing models and just updated the textures and lighting on maps. Would of liked to see more detailed re-models of the ships with all the extra little details modeled out instead of being done through textures. Still I will be getting this, incredible value for the price they are asking!
homeworld 2 hasn't seen too much change other then some effects an some small texture and turret model improvements, but homeworld 1 has a massive change in quality, remodelled, retextured, looks so much better. I also hear they improved the engine too, to take larger scale fleets in battle.

Its just remastered giving the original games but with new graphics. Isnt everything gameplay wise exactly the same? Similar to halo anniversary? Exact same game but with enhanced graphics. Or am i reading it wrong?
ShortAsianGamer To make HW1 look better they moved it into the HW2 engine. The two engines do things slightly differently (weapons fire is ballistics based in the original game but percentile based in the sequel, amongst other things). Some people have already been complaining because the HW2 UI is a lot more cluttered and invasive on the screen than the HW1 one, and questions over whether HW1 fighters will no longer use fuel have gone unanswered.
The question is to what degree the 'feel' of HW1 (which many fans prefer) has been compromised or lost, and we won't know that for a couple of days. It's also why they've included the original HW, so people can still play that instead.
Adam Whitehead They will not use fuel this is confirmed, fuel was never fun to manage anyways so not a big loss in my eyes, I am more concerned about the general feel and look of the combat but I am sure they found a nice balance, guess we will find out.
Jeff Broxton i liked it, homeworld 1 always had like this "scary" feeling because many things could go wrong, like, you set the wrong formation, tactic etc. or you run out of fuel, which means instant death for your fighers so you always needed a carrier or support frigate with your fighters in hw2 they nerved the importance for formations and tactics, and since its now in the same engine i bet they also scratched that from the first homeworld..
This game was a big part of my childhood. PLEASE do this game justice and don't mess it up:)

Other way around... Homeworld came out 23 September 1999, Eve Online came out 6 May 2003. Playing Eve I have always been enthralled because it had so many things that reminded me of Homeworld. Both epic games

As a player of traditional RTS (Starcraft 1, Rise of Nation, Age of Empires), how much do you recommend this game? Thanks for help.
The main difference is that in Hw you need to control your units in 3d space, which takes some getting used to. Also, you don't build a base, because your ships build every other ship.

Exactly. Your "base" in this case is a mobile fleet you need to defend and move as required for objectives. I think for a land combat game "Company of Heros" is closer, with its basic buildings and units coming in from offscreen (in Homeword, built by the Mothership or shipyard). There is resource gathering though, and the normal things required for that. I always liked the fact that your fleet survived with you, made each ship feel more important... even if it was just a bunch of fighters that survived that last mission.
3D space seems like bit of a challenge. Resource is my favourite part any RTS I've played. And how is the learning curve?
It has been years since I played Homeworld 1, but if I recall they had normal tuturoials and also the typical slow ramp-up in the mission structure to ease you in. I don't recall any issues learning and playing the game. I missed Homeworld 2 so no idea there. 3D space was controled from the command screen, X and Y was normal mouse movement and Z was turned off and on with Ctrl or Shift. It worked quite well, and most of the time you are zoomed out controling the entire battle from the overview.

The new interface was redesigned to be more scalable for different resolutions. We'll have to see how well it works, once out. But from Totalbiquits preview vid the new UI seems to be quite solid.

OK, on the side of the "mother ship" it has 02.... where is the 01 ship?
01 ship is Kushan Mothership from HW1. Pride of Hiigara (from HW2) has 02.
Like Terran said, if it's holding true to the original games 01 is HW1 and 02 is HW2. The Hiigaran actually rebuilt the mothership for the campaign of HW2.
APJ1986 Which is interesting, because in Cataclysm they stated the 01 mothership was repurposed as a shipyard in orbit around Hiigara, so it was still there. Wonder what happened to it.

well, since homeworld 2 takes place, I believe over 100 years after homeworld 1, they probably scuttled it or left it as a monument in orbit around hiigara (probably turned into a museum)
then again, they did dump the second mothership at the center of the galaxy, you would think they could just keep it in stationary orbit and come back for it.
JAV1L15 From lore it would seem that it remained in orbit around Hiigara and eventually scrapped it. You can tell that there is a clear difference between 01 and 02 in the main control center of 01 being open and having a handle. Also the engines are clearly much smaller. The 02 is the military variant while the 01 is the colony/exploration variant.
This franchise needs a movie trilogy or tv series. VERY underrated!
