I was 15 in 1976 too, and loved SLIK, short lived as their career proved to be. But Midge went on to even greater things, didn't he, as we all know. Whenever I recall 1976, the same things instantly re-register in my mind: ABBA, the hot summer, all those ladybirds and, of course, SLIK!

Main reason that this song didn't get a lot of airplay was that Midge couldn't attend all the press releases following a car accident when it was released.

this was one of a handful of songs/groups I loved when I very briefly lived in England and when I returned to the US found out no one ever heard of (John Miles, Status Quo being other examples) I bet there is a bunch of other good "never made it to the US" british rock music.

When you think about it now, this was quite an ambitious gamble for writers/producers Bill Martin & Phil Coulter - for 1976 it was a rather clever mix of prog, pop & Bugsy Malone.
It was, in fact, the successor to Puppet on a String. Or was it Boom-Bang-A-Fucking-Bang? If I could spell dhiarrhoeaia I would describe this song as such. (Not the band's fault!)
@@billybum417 No, just a copy of such. Embarrassingly cringeworthy, I'm sad to say, especially since I knew Mr Ure when he sang Edgar Broughton and similar.
The opening is actually a take on the "Concerto de Aranjuez" which had charted a few weeks earlier as an instrumental called Manuel and the Music Of The Mountains.
Just got curious about this one after playing FOREVER AND EVER elsewhere and yes, I remember this one now from my youth. They weren't THAT bad were they, you could really tell that MIDGE URE had some talent and would soon find himself fronting one of the best bands of the 80s.
I believe this would have been a much bigger hit than it was but there was some problem at the pressing plant or distribution or something in its vital second or third week when people couldn't buy it.

Just about the worst follow up to a number one you could have. even though it's an absolutely amazing track, there's no way the kids would have got this back then.
@buckley54 I can't work out - from ur comment - whether you like this track by Slik or not! You refer to it as "rather tuneful crap" (an interesting turn of phrase).
