We had next-door neighbors who loved these ballads. They would be over 100 years old by now, but they meant a lot to me. The wife died in 1994, and the husband died in 1998. I liked them well enough that I never really got over their death, so I like listening to these ballads, but it is also bittersweet for me. R.I.P DOT AND MERRILL HARVEY.

I only got to know this ballad because of Dylan’s song hard rain that’s gonna fall.
Trovo questa ballata molto educativa. Mentre il ragazzo vorrebbe solo sdraiarsi e morire in pace, la madre con un certo senso pratico lo richiama alla responsabilità, perché, anche nel momento della morte, pensi all'avvenire dei suoi cari. Se tutti avessero questo senso di responsabilità, si eviterebbero molte guerre fratricide per l'eredità.
Studiato a scuola,ed è venuto il mitico Giordano a suonare per noi!

We performed this in our english day 4 years ago. I was the one who acted for Lord Randal. This is amazing and I like this so much. After a long time I just found this and I still remember all stanzas...... 💖
This ballad has nothing to do with fairies, elves, and taboos of the deep woods.
It is about a man being poisoned by a deceptive lover.
Brundlefly Lord Randal's lover is actually the fairy. The fairy punished Lord Randal for breaking the taboo.

Again the fairy theory is new on me. But F J Child (who numbered this as 12 in his collection) said it was all but universally agreed that the 'eels' were in fact snakes hence the lethal effect. Other versions make it more explicit by having them brown and speckled and having been found in hedges and ditches.

yes we studied this twenty years ago or more and our teacher asked us to read it ,I raised my hand and asked her to sing it when she agreed I sang it to the tune of A hard rain's a gonna fall the next day she brought me the printed lyrics of Bob Dylan's

Many variants exist for all the Child Ballads, with the canonical versions being a snapshot from one time and place. I studied these at university, fifty years ago, and still find joy in tracing out fresh linkages. The Unquiet Grave is another favorite.
