  • It was a missing persons case that had gone cold for three-and-a-half decades. Jonelle Matthews vanished without a trace after performing in a school Christmas concert in 1984. The 12-year-old’s disappearance gained national attention, but the case went cold. Then, in 2019, Jonelle’s remains were discovered by construction workers 20 miles from where she lived. Last October, authorities arrested 69-year-old Steve Pankey. He has pleaded not guilty and previously denied having anything to do with it. #InsideEdition

My brother was missing for 22 months before part of his skull and jaw bone were found five miles from where he disappeared. 22 months was absolute torture. I can't imagine it going on for decades. It's been 25 years since he went missing, and the official case is closed, but I believe that something else happened. The not knowing where he was was the worst, but not knowing for sure what happened is a close second. I'm thankful they finally have closure for Jonelle. Obviously I wish it were better news, but closure will hopefully mend their hearts some.

@KASHMAER the official report says he fell and hit his head and drowned in the river near where we were hiking when he went missing. But in my heart I believe he was kidnapped. After 25 years there's only been the two small pieces of his skull that have been found. Where's the rest of him? Why did it take 22 months for those two pieces to be found? There's too many unanswered questions, and too many other variables for me to be comfortable accepting that he just simply drowned. I want to believe that's the answer because obviously it's the better option of the two, but in my heart I just know that's not the case.

For several weeks after the disappearance, police placed Jonelle's birth mother Terri Vierra-Martinez under surveillance, without telling her that her daughter had gone missing. Ten years later and after Jonelle was declared legally dead, Gloria received a letter from the birth mother, requesting permission to visit the child she gave up for adoption, something Jonelle always wanted. The birth mother had used a search consultant to help locate the child. The adoptive parents notified the birth mother about what happened, and the families became friends.

It is strange, you see a missing case on TV, you have nothing to do with it & never met or knew the victim, but keep calling the police about the case, then give them a list of suspects. That in itself is so bizarre in nature.
