Indonesia's forest fires flare up after a four-year hiatus

  • Indonesia is battling a surge in major forest fires this year - and locals are ill-equipped with their buckets and DIY tools. Even though some parts of Indonesia have been battling land and forest fires for years, which have often caused transboundary haze to neighbouring countries such as Singapore and Malaysia, there have been no major fires in the last four years.

Must give them face lah. Indonesians are very sensitive. Cannot confront them head on or accuse. Megaphone diplomacy doesn't work. Quietly sit down and drink kopi luwak and then say "by the way, there are some fires here and there, do you need any help?" Respect. Adek must respect Abang. Vivian Balakrishnan, Kishore Mahbubani and Tommy Koh are masters in this art of diplomacy.

Government should hold land owners responsible and impose heavy fines or jail terms. Millions of people's health including neighbouring countries are affected. Cant believe they cant sort this problem for the after all these years. It's truly an embarrassment for the Indonesian government.

You do know it is EASIER to hold smokers producing second hand smoke on DAILY and even HOURLY basis to kill people responsible, especially in Singapore.
If you can't do that, you expect Indonesia to do that???
Those farmers also have their RIGHTs to enjoy their lands, and the NECESSITIES to burn their lands to grow more for survival.
So with those bird brains in charge, how can we expect Indonesia to do anything when Singapore can't even do the right thing itself?
      Double standard?
You do know second hand smoke haze is many times more dangerous than those haze from Singapore?

@@jamess5084it’s by no means natural. We’re not talking about Australia here. More than 99% of the time the fires are lit deliberately and illegally as big corporations engage in unethical and unsustainable business practices to chase profits. In open defiance of Indonesian environmental laws. And ordinary Indonesians who may be living rurally and who may not be enjoying the same level of healthcare as those in Jakarta or Singapore, suffer because of it

@@spdfatomicstructure do your research and read indonesian news sources as well, not just singapore or malaysian. you are not getting the full information. do you think the indonesian government is that stupid and let the companies do it again and again. one thing I can tell you though, it is not high in the agenda of the indonesian government. it is not even in the newspaper or news site. even jokowi said it is not a big issue as compared to 2015, and the authorities is doing much better this time. they are fighting the fire, and they are not responsible for the wind direction. so singapore or malaysia can wait for the wind to change, or they can send people to solve the problem, coz it is not a priority for indonesia.

@@jamess5084 we’re perfectly happy to send people over to render assistance but that’s only if the government in Jakarta gives the green light. And fighting this season’s fires won’t be enough. After the current crisis more needs to be done to definitively address this problem at its source and prevent any future recurrences. It should be a priority because many of those affected by the haze are ordinary Indonesians who are living rurally and therefore may not have the same level of access to good healthcare as someone in, say, Palembang or Jakarta. I would suggest that the fire & the forestry departments have to work together to solve these issues mainly in Sumatra, Kalimantan and part of Java by using their own helicopter fleets if they have one or use UAS/UAV for patrols, surveillance with scheduled monitoring with alternating teams from both the agencies supported by the police & the military/air force too with the assets.
Plantation corporations too should set up their own fire department since it's a threat near to their property with the potential of harming innocent lives.
Operations for cloud seeding, making heavy rain 🌧️☔ should also be carried out particularly in those areas of frequent fire occurrences like the peat lands.

You have existing laws, you police won't move, as if I own the forensic labs and equipment and am paid to catch the perpetuators.
This talking haze is super hypocritical when you have daily issues of big time lethal second hand smoke at home. You have to the power in your own government to deal with a more dangerous haze, and you have the thick skin to go after other government whose haze is because poor farmers need to clear lands at lower costs... ... since higher costs means less farmers less food and higher price which you will still complain.

Why don't they make a law stating that no plantation can be cleared by fire. The owner of any plantation land cleared by fire must be fined an amount equivalent or more than the cost of putting out fires in the surrounding areas. Moreover, impose a ten year prohibition on growing crops on land cleared by fire. Liability should be presumed if fire breaks out on their land so they are obligated to guard it from fire even though they allege they didn't start it.
