I know everyone has their own opinions and you don’t mind negative comments, but I want to offer a different take. I suffer from anxiety. Many years ago it was very bad, I was young and barely functioning it was so overwhelming. For some reason I found reading Fine Gardening magazine so soothing. I poured over every issue, repeatedly. Now the odd thing is, I didn’t garden. At all. Fast forward to now. I’m so much better and hardly affected by anxiety anymore but I think we can all agree that this is a stressful time. In addition I suffered a significant loss last fall and I’m in the process of selling my house and moving. Your channel has become the equivalent of those old fine gardening magazines. Once again gardens and gardening are soothing my soul. I still don’t garden. I’ve got some herbs and a couple of jalapeño plants, but watching your channel and several others has been a lifesaver in this time. Even if you never donated so much as a cherry tomato to the needy you’d still be helping and contributing. Thanks to you and Aaron.

So glad to hear you are doing better. Try a container pot or two to get started. The process of learning, trying, succeeding (and oftentimes failing), and gaining satisfaction is truly therapeutic and, since it's on a small scale, not overwhelming. Best wishes.

Yes, this!!!! Their videos soothe my soul. I watch them before I go to sleep at night so that I will have pleasant dreams.
And, her advice has helped so much in my garden. I started a vegetable garden for the first time in years, and my go to for advice has been Laura, MiGardener ( who I found out about because Laura recommended his channel), and Monty Don.
Even if she never gave produce or flowers from her garden away, she is helping others I

I cleaned houses for a living for 18 years. #1 Someone once said that people waste their money on hiring me when they could do it themselves and #2 many that hire me say they feel bad that they have to hire me...because they should be able to do it but just don't have the time (or desire to when they do have the time.) So, I always tell those people that #1 I was able to feed my family because of those people "wasting their money" and #2 even the proverbs 31 women had help, so their isn't anything wrong with having help.
All of this to say, what might seem like a waste or extravagance to some, is an income to many others. Think of the companies that make all the products you use. You fed many mouths just in your purchases! Never be afraid to waste money. Someone else will benefit from it.

Kudos to you for answering Susan’s statement so well. I think that it’s easy to look at a TH-camr and think that they should do everything and be everything to everyone. But apartment gardening and urban gardening isn’t your niche 🤷‍♀️ And that’s okay! Lots of your info is still super helpful no matter where you plant your vegetables. And donating and helping provide for those who can’t produce as much food as you do counts for a whole lot. Keep doing you Laura!

My thoughts exactly. Haha and she answered it with more respect than I would have. Lol the people that Susan listed specialize in that area of gardening. Not everyone will follow that. Also, there really wasn’t a crisis in food. It was food shortage as in getting it out to the stores as quick as people were buying it. There wasn’t and actual food shortage. People talk so much behind a screen about things they know nothing about. They’d know Laura and Aaron are good people if they’ve seen more than one of their videos. 🤷🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

There are some people who are so stressed today that they're taking it out on other people who are completely innocent. I've recently had a situation where a person blamed me for bad weather and COVID and how difficult her life is. All I did was ask for a refund for a product she never sent. and she refused. Stress can certainly change people. I add them to the prayer list.

Here's a kiss on your forehead Laura! Your gracious, positive character really shown when you addressed Susan's comment. She made some good points but those seemed to disregard that we apartment people aren't (yet) converting all our bedrooms and living rooms into pantries and hydroponic veggie systems any more than you are turning all your outdoor living spaces into veggie gardens and veggie greenhouses. Your flower gardens are LIVING spaces, exactly like rooms in your house and psychologically and emotionally every bit as beneficial and healing as a peck of potatoes. There are many, many channels where we apartment dwellers can go for info on what she mentioned.... I prefer to come here and "live the life" vicariously with you and your family!! I've been a horticulturist and Landscaper for more than 30 years. It has been an adventure every day especially living in Cape Town. We have such diversity in our special little corner of the world. Fynbos is the smallest floral kingdom of the six and only stretches for about 900km/2 But we are sandwiched between two oceans so the biodiversity in plants insects and birds is special.

Yeah, I felt Susan's comment but reasonably respectful (although I don't personally agree with it) until the last bit with the "WAKE UP". Those two words added at the end were extremely rude and unfortunately that rudeness probably had the opposite effect of trying to get her point across as that overshadowed anything she was trying to say. I think some people hide behind being blunt (especially online) and like to believe they're just honest and say what needs to be said when in all honesty they just lack common courtesy.

Unfortunately, many of the comments are equally rude so if you live in a glass house . . . Very disappointed that people think they've got to run to Laura's defense when she very professionally and diplomatically handled a [perish the thought] comment that wasn't all unicorns and rainbows.

I have primarily only ever grown food, because I didn't want to spend my efforts on something that wouldn't be usable to me. It's hot and humid where I live and I can't be out working for long without getting covered in sweat. That being said, now I have a good mix of (mostly) veggies, but also some flowers. I'm never going to be a manicured lawn type of person, but who am I to poo poo others who have different priorities than me? We each have our own preferences and there are plenty of TH-cam channels that cover each of the things we want to learn about. It isn't Laura's job to do it all. I understand where Susan was coming from with her comment, but she was extremely rude in the way she asked.

My mom and me are like that. My mom plants all kinds of veggies and some flowers. But I only plant flowers and next year I might do a few tomatoes. But the flowers are far from a waste of time for me. When I am with my flowers..planting and tending to them..I feel so at peace. I worked from home during the quarantine and had children in the house at the same time plus 2 dogs and also dealing with so much uncertainty.... multiple times a day I would go out to my garden and visit the flowers..it helped me keep my sanity and for those moments I was able to mentally escape.

Not everyone wants to grow food and not everyone can grow food, and for those people, they can't learn to plant anything else if everyone focuses on food production. Not to mention, a lot of what you talk about can be applied to any type of garden. Soil type, lighting, spacing etc. is all part of all gardening. I grow mostly food (vs. landscape) and I have learned a lot about brands, tools and supplements from you that I have applied to my food crops. And every other media platform is "covid this and covid that" and while being aware is important, I come to your channel to learn about plants and for a bit of an escape. I also learned how to rid my yard of mosquitos with one of your videos which keeps my toddler and myself healthier, which is equally as important. Hi Laura, Landscape designer and gardener here. I love your videos and I wanted to address the Susan comment. I work for a lot of clients that care deeply for their landscapes and I am happy to have this job so I can help them accomplish their landscape goals. I'm glad that people in my area have the means to hire me and many many other landscapers so I can provide for my family, (put food on the table....). Having a home vegetable garden is awesome, but in my part of the country, (North East) we have an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables from our local farmers. So we don't need have a food shortage as Susan might think is so wide spread. If there is a food shortage is other places or countries, I think a great way to help is to donate money to charities. I also think people need to stop calling her a "Karen" cause that just continues the negativity. Lets do what we gardeners do best and kindly educate people on what they don't know.

    • @Sullivan_Owen
      @Sullivan_Owen 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

not all communities, especially inner city communities have access to fresh produce and farmers. In my city, there is a shortage of pollinators so that the community gardens struggle to produce food at all and there's a push to bring back the necessary wildlife to help grow these true community gardens where the harvest is divided among the residents. While I don't agree with Susan's tone, even in the prosperous US there are communities that don't have access to fresh food and need education and support-but I don't think that falls on one TH-camr to solve. I also agree with you the comments back are just as antagonistic as the initial comment.

I appreciate your perspective on Susan’s question. I have the same feeling in my area in regard to water. Water is not in crisis where I live. Personally, I don’t pay for water nor sewer (I have well and septic). While I fully understand water rights, water purity, and water accessibility is an international problem, it is not an issue in my area. So, for me, water conservation is not necessary. I fully support accessibility for all people, but for me to shave a minute off my shower does nothing for anyone anywhere. If we have a drought, or if people need *my* water, different story. I will happily do my part. I assume if you lived in an area where space and food were a grave concern, your garden style would be very different. I consider you an artist working with your own tools and vision. Keep up the great work!

Laura and Aaron. First off I do not want to nor should anyone else want to single out this one person. We should follow your lead on how you answered it with understanding and respect. I want to let you know that you are one of two channels who have helped to calm me and get me through some TERRIBLY HARD days/months/yrs. I have depression/anxiety and Complex PTSD (apparently it is the worst kind i m told) and I have isolated myself from my children grandchildren friends and really the entire world. I have learned so much about so many different things regarding gardening and I love to watch you interact with Aaron and your handsome son and family. I really enjoy to see/hear about your mistakes and respect that you share it all for us all to learn from. I used to have a garden and flowers insides and out. I would get so much joy just watching them come up in spring etc. I lost all joy and stopped everything. This year with help from you I felt good enough...worthy enough to plant flowers on my balcony. I even planted some pea's . It started last fall when i took a clipping of a beautiful coral geranium outside my dr office. I babied it and got it to root. My daughter almost killed it when she forgot about it but i nursed it back and it is full of gorgeous bright coral blooms and is sprouting new branches(whatever they called) and brings me so much joy every day. Thank you for helping me, teaching me that i can do it, i deserve it and even if something happens it will be ok to try again. I have noticed that your heart is happiest when you help others and you always encourage others to do the same. I feel it is wrong for people to try to make people feel bad for whatever reason it is---even growing grass---The world is in turmoil and we all need MORE BEAUTY KINDNESS LOVE COMPASSION PATIENCE ENCOURAGEMENT and LAURA/AARON n mini n animals in our lives to make it through. Thank you and God Bless you and all of America...I am in Canada and my heart hurts for what is happening there. EVERYONE SHARE THE CHANNEL AND SPREAD THE LOVE.

Bless you for being open about not having all your dahlias planted - I'm still playing catchup myself and have several packages of bulbs to plant.

All I can say is , you do you, it’s your space, I appreciate all the videos, , I don’t worry about the right lighting, I just enjoy the chatter about a beautiful garden and watching your enthusiasm for it! So please don’t worry so much , and keep doing what you are doing, because it is working! Thank you again for providing inspiration world wide! From Australia

I want to tell you why I love your channel. You inspire me to focus on the beautiful things in life. Growing up that came naturally to me. I was an artist and eventually became a professional musician, so I really believed in the importance of having beauty in our lives. Somewhere along the way people “out there” tried to convince me that beauty was frivolous. I seriously questioned the value of my chosen profession, and I even stopped playing music as a result. After having suffered losses of family members and a major trauma in my life I happened across one of your videos. Seeing your passion and joy for beautiful gardening, your happy smile, and seeing glimpses of your family life brighten my days and encourage me and help me to try to focus on good and beautiful things in life. There are so many people who want to focus on the negative, but you show how possible it is to allow ourselves to focus on good things. These things heal our minds and souls. What you are doing by putting out these videos is incredibly important that goes way beyond gardening. Thank you for what you do! By the way, I have also really learned a lot from your many videos about vegetable gardening too! I not only have more beautiful flowers around my home but I now have the biggest vegetable garden I have had in years thanks to inspiration from you! Please continue to have the confidence that what you are doing is right and good even when voices “out there” try to dissuade you. Keep up everything you are doing! You are helping people, truly!

Thank you guys so much for all the work and effort you do! You have taught me and my husband so much ❤️ my 3 year old daughter loves watching your tours with me she is all about flowers. We had no idea our whole family would be out gardening like we are and it’s thanks to your family sharing the joy it brings 🥰
