If you had the power to see the future, would you take it upon yourself to prevent harm from happening? With a touch from his hands, Johnny is able to make those hard choices. Based on the 1979 novel by Stephen King, THE DEAD ZONE tells the story of school teacher Johnny Smith (Christopher Walken). After a fatal car accident puts Johnny in a five year coma, he awakens with the gift of sight. Directed by David Cronenberg, THE DEAD ZONE is easily one of our favorite Stephen King film adaptations.

My favorite King adaptation. The pacing is perfect, the atmosphere and music are top notch, and Christopher Walken's performance as Johnny Smith is incredible. He really captured the essence of a haunted and broken man, gifted with a strange power he can't control or understand.
I have to agree. I'm a long time King fan, and most of King movie adaptations were AWFUL, but this one is an exception. Very good movie true to the book in all the important aspects. The Green Mile was done pretty well, too.

It has been DECADES and I STILL REMEMBER THIS FILM with Christopher Walken. He's BadAss.
The only movie I have ever seen where the hero dies and it's a happy ending - he achieved his purpose. He saved the world.
and i am glad stillson never came to power he should had listen to his advisors before he fired those missiles
One of the great Stephen King movie adaptations...with a fantastic script from Jeffrey Boam,wonderful direction from the legendary David Cronenberg and a quite simply terrific cast featuring brilliant performances from Christopher Walken and Martin Sheen.
One of Walken's best performances before he became a lovable parody of himself...
Love the cast in this movie; Martin Sheen as a maniac, Herbert Lom as his doctor, Brooke Adams as the love interest, Colleen Dewhurst as the killer's mom and of course , Walken, as Johnny! So deliciously campy.
Christopher walken is brilliant....and love this film.
Hands down Cronenburgs best movie.
He's got a fever and the only prescription is more cowbell.

the movie did not show well was how much each vision took out of Johnny, he was done anyway.
On The Actors Studio Walken said he removes all punctuation from scripts, so he can use his own cadence. Also claimed to have had a sound guy shoot a prop gun when he shook the hands of actors to see the future. Giving them their shocked look.

Better than most adaptations
Awesome music score and great movie like this makes me want to see it again and again. But then I am a sap for heroes with hard luck. Loved David Janssen in The Fugitive during the 60's.

Martin Sheen would later be in another Stephen King film one year later in Firestarter.
why was that kid in the house alone while her mother was working in the hospital? Where was the babysitter? That being said, this book was one of the best Stephen King ever wrote.
Kids were always left alone back then.
It’s a shame they never made a sequel to this, was it never considered? This was such a good film and very well cast.
Not sure how a sequel would work. They did make a television series.
