    2000 movie is the wrong choice. Should be American Psycho. The controversy surrounding this film was crazy even before it was made. The very announcement about the making of this film caused crazy reactions, anyone who was old enough at that time remembers it perfectly. Feminists and the media furiously protested and organized actions against the film, death threats were sent to Christian Bale, and people in the movie industry openly told him that playing the role would be career suicide.
    Sponsors like Rolex didn't want to be associated with the movie in a loud way, so the original line 'don't touch the Rolex' was changed into 'don't touch the watch'. It was a total frenzy, after the release too. Director had to cut some sex scenes out, and only after this edit, the movie was released in theatres!
    Yet thank God American Psycho was made, as it not only stood the test of time better than almost any other controversial movie, it became iconic and cult classic for a reason - the movie just perfectly portrays and mocks sick modern society, especially society of 2022, and that's even more remarkable if you think about it. Timeless masterpiece and def was ahead of its time!

    • @jevinday
      @jevinday ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree to an extent. American psycho was super controversial, it caused a scene (which is good because it makes people actually watch the movie and think about the themes as opposed to the content), but I also live in the US and haven't seen battle royale yet so I have no idea what the media was like over in Japan when it came out. It could have been a fucking shit show and I'd have no idea

    I've got to say, Joker is one of the most amazing films I've ever seen, and I've been a movie buff for forty-five years. As Roger Ebert would say, that movie takes you out of your seat and into a world of its own. You can't stop watching it, and the climax of that movie is just shocking. Kudos to Todd Phillips, Robert Dr Niro and especially Joaquin Phoenix, who really gave that performance his all and made Arthur Fleck come to life.

      I watched that film the morning my Dad was dying. Both before and after he passed away. And in a weird way it made me feel better. I can’t explain it except here’s this guy (spoiler alert 🚨) who’s an outsider, nobody cares about him except his Mother. Sadly I can relate to that only with me it’s my Mother and Father. But my Dad was my everything. (I love my Mom to pieces but we’re never gotten along 🫤.)Then she dies and he has nothing left and nothing left to lose. Obviously his mother betrayed him in a huge way and he ends up putting her out of her misery so there’s a disparity there but there was a lot of unfinished business with me and my Dad. I never got to really tell him how thankful I was or how sorry I was for some of the things I put him through. I felt Arthur Fleck’s pain thanks to Joaquin and the dark pall he had over him every day. Made me feel less alone. Even if it is just a movie

    I actually loved the fact that Joker resembled The King of Comedy, I had just watched it less than a year before joker came out so it was kind of fresh in my mind and I thought it was pretty brilliant to have DeNiro playing the interviewer. Lars von Trier is my favorite filmmaker. I was hoping you'd put The House That Jack Built for 2018 because a bunch of pretentious asses walked out of the screening at Cannes, but I get why you chose the Green Book. Good list! I haven't seen irreversible yet but it's on my list. Martyrs and A Serbian Film were much less hard to stomach than I thought they would be, I personally thought that the metaphorical value outweighed the graphic violence. I also felt the same way about the passion of the Christ, I am not a Christian but I do think that Jesus is a beautiful historical figure and thought that the way they were able to humanize Jesus was incredible.

I remember seeing it on the news for both of those movies, especially Joker because the families of the victims of the Dark Knight Rises early screening shooting were afraid that if Joker was released in theaters, something similar to that was going to happen. As for The Interview, I remember hearing that theaters refused to show it. I also remember the movie The Hunt I think it's called was supposed to be released in 2019, but due to the two shootings happening just days if not a week apart, the studio decided to delay its release until 2020, just before the lockdown happened.

    I’ve seen Battle Royale, Pearl Harbor though not sure what would be controversial about it, not saying it’s a good film. Zero Dark Thirty I remember not liking but I think it’s still well directed and acted. I’ve seen Ghostbusters 2016 as well which I know about the criticism made by people from trailers and such don’t think it’s a great film but I found stuff regarding this a bit odd.
    Seen Star Wars Episode 7 The Last Jedi again like with previously mentioned film I don’t think either are controversial just divisive, I don’t think it’s a good film. Lastly seen Green Book and Joker which I think Joker is well-made it’s just my mood wasn’t the greatest when I saw it.

    As a huge fan of the original ghostbusters, I can agree that the fan base was insanely divided on that one. But as far as controversial movies go, Sausage Party released to every major theater that year. That’s a tough call to make.

    How can you folks at WatchMojo ignore American Psycho? The movie is controversial because the protagonist is a Wall Street yuppie in 1980’s New York City, hiding his true nature as a misogynistic serial killer suffering from NPD (Narcissistic Personality Disorder).
    The fact that you guys left out such a controversial classic is truly a sin. Shame on you again, WatchMojo.

    I really hate when people complain about actors not being what they portray because so what that girl wasn’t artistic it’s called acting terminator was it an actual robot? Jacqueline Phoenix isn’t mentally ill it’s called acting for a reason realize how hard it would get to have actual people on screen.

    • @banjorox1
      @banjorox1 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It's autistic not artistic. And it wouldn't be that hard there are numerous autistic actors who said they would have done it. Furthermore that wasn't the only issue, it was portrayed in a completely inaccurate, stereotyped way that suggested no understanding or research.

      I actually liked it too. I'm a Star Wars fan. But I'd better be considering my origin. ;)
      I admittedly prefer Kylo over Vader, but hey, Kylo didn't kill our kind!! And he's much better looking than Anakin/Vader ever was.
      Also fun fact: I had an AU where Kylo actually became Supreme Leader after killing Snoke, but how was probably different since in the AU, there were other chars so no Rey to be there during that time. :P

    Ghostbusters was so good, I hate the original but the female version is amazing and it'll always will be also most all of these are about sex and murder geez if murder is then every horror movie would be on here also Joker is so bad.
    2014 should be anything cause that movie was controversial because they casted Matt Bomer as the trans character! He did good though and I'm glad he got casted because I feel like if they casted a real trans woman then it wouldn't be as good

    Did you know that the 2016 Ghostbusters had an extended edition that was taken out of theaters, as it was incredibly sexist to men, even more than the entire movie itself? The only way to watch the extended version is to download it online. I highly recommend avoiding this.
