I love what you said about Freddie at Wembley being like a kid jumping around his bedroom. I also love that you realized that Queen were a real band and not just "pretentious" when you watched them at Live Aid. They were viewed that way by the press for much of their career. You've mentioned several times about the band being playful, and I think many of their critics didn't like it that their lyrics weren't always serious . But their music was always serious in the search for excellence. We've watched you become a fan, you now can begin to understand that EVERY Queen song is different from every other one, so stop being surprised! Time to do another concert reaction...there are still quite a few to choose from.

It was the last song on the last album Freddie did with Queen, Innuendo. Brian said Freddie was so ill he had to prop himself on the mixing desk with his microphone. Brian was shocked he was able to belt it out. He said his voice sounded like a laser going through glass. It’s amazing how good he sounded being so frail and ill.
    Thanks for doing this.

„That track was strange - recalls Brian. I did the most of the lyrics for Freddie to sing and you can imagine what that felt like. I did ask him at one point if he was okay about it and he said, Yeah, totally okay about it. I will give it my all. And he did. He sang, I think, some of the best vocals of his life on that track, and most of the tracks on that album are incredible. He really was getting very weak by that time, but he could still summon up that strength to sing.”
I am always impressed by his strength, determination and perserverance listening to this song. He was a musician, a performer from top to toe.

as usual as time goes on Brian takes more and more credit for things
in many interviews and on TV he repeated that he and Freddie came up with the theme and wrote the lyrics together. most of the song was complete but Freddie wasn't well but from the session Brian had all the material for the rest of the song but polished it up and added wings of a butterfly
theme as Brian said was a sad clown with his smile painted on
      Freddie used
      wiki
The opening lyric and melody of "It's a Hard Life" is based on the line "Ridi, Pagliaccio, sul tuo amore infranto!" (Laugh, clown, at your broken love!) from "Vesti la giubba", an aria from Ruggero Leoncavallo's opera Pagliacci. The same melody is also quoted in the soundtrack of the movie A Night at the Opera after which Queen had named their 1975 album.
      wiki
Pagliaccio the clown because "the show must go on".
The aria is often regarded as one of the most moving in the operatic repertoire of the time. The pain of Canio is portrayed in the aria and exemplifies the entire notion of the "tragic clown": smiling on the outside but crying on the inside. This is still displayed today, as the clown motif often features the painted-on tear running down the cheek of the performer.

Thanks for doing this one Rory, it's very sentimental to me I played it at my husband's funeral just 2 years ago, he died of cancer at just 61, he was a big Queen fan from a teenager in 1975, the lyrics help me to carry on and try and make the most of everyday, love all your reactions to Queen music and the documentaries, I always look forward to seeing your reactions and to how you have grown to appreciate who Queen really are and what great musicians they all were x

Great reaction, it is nice to see you reacting to something from Innuendo, my second favourite Queen album! Innuendo is a great album, it does leave you with the thought of what might have been, it was a great new direction for Queen in the 90's, it was a no.1 album as well, Queen were still going strong. The Show Must Go On was a top 5 hit, one month before Freddie's death. Freddie also manged to do some of his best singing on the Innuendo album. The Show Must Go On, has a little call back to Queen's debut album and the song My Fairy King. In my Fairy King the lyrics are, "someone has drained the colour from my wings, broken my fairy circle ring". In the Show Must Go On, the lyrics are , "My wings are painted like the wings of butterflies, fairy tales of yesterday may grow, but never die, I can fly".
Queen does get accused of being pretensions, but they are far less pretensions then many other artist. They were themselves, and they always did things with a good sense of humour.

I don’t know if you’d ever listen to early, early Queen.
The performance is from the Oxford gig on 20/11/1973; you can see this on Ryan Newton’s YT channel. On their first tour accompanying Mott the Hoople as their opener (Queen were not the main act - as they were a bright and upcoming band).
Although there may be no live video for the performance and some audio blemishes (it’s bootlegged and not offical), there is a song on their set list entitled ‘Hangman’ (the guitar solo has been cut).
Freddie’s tone sounds a lot younger, even attempting falsetto that he never attempted again in later performances.
And there’s even a sound check (20 minutes) if you want to listen to their rehearsals.
    Hope you enjoy your listen.
From a devout Queen fan, keep up the work.

Freddie was too sick to film a video but he still hit those notes. The compilation video reminds us of how many times we enjoyed his different performances and confirms his importance in our lives over the years. We made memories with Queen playing in the background, a song can take you right back to who you were with, what you were doing and how you felt. He was a musical anomaly and we truly lost someone special when he died 31 years ago November 24th 1991. Far too young but he sure made sure we had plenty to remember him by. 👑

thanks, Rory! such a great song.. of course, the video is compiled from past ones.. b/c Fred was too sick to film... Brian wrote it, but recognized that it might be too much for Fred sing at the time... According to guitarist Brian May, Freddie was hardly able to stand or walk, let alone sing and record the vocally demanding and damn near-operatic song, “The Show Must Go On”. But Freddie slammed a shot of vodka, and said "I'll fucking do it, Darling!" went in and completely "lacerated that vocal."

Brian had previously in many interviews and on tv said he and Freddie discussed the theme and wrote the lyrics together with Brian later adding wings of a butterfly
if he was well singing SMGO would be a challenge as it is difficult to sing words clearly in high range in chest voice Brian could only manage it in falsetto

7:27, When it came to that note, Brian May was unsure if Freddie would be able to pull it off in his condition, since he barely had the strength to even stand up. This song was released as a single in the United Kingdom on October 14, 1991 in promotion for the Greatest Hits II album, just six weeks before Freddie died on November 24, 1991. Following the death of Freddie, the song re-entered the British charts & spent as many weeks in the top 75 as it did upon its original release, reaching a peak of #16. The song was first played live on April 20, 1992 during The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert. 🌟

Another fantastic track penned by Brian. It’s a testimony to how well they understood each other.
He said, “ Freddie would not talk about his illness, but he was putting it out there in the music. ‘Songs like “The Show Must Go On”, in my case, or “These Are the Days of Our Lives’, in Roger’s case, were things that we gave to Freddie as a way of him working through stuff with us,’ said Brian. ‘The Show Must Go On’ did not stint on the drama or the directness of its message.”

    • @bluebell3720
      @bluebell3720 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I think it should be credited to him and Freddie as the wrote the lyrics together or even the band as a whole ( I know it is on the album as they all were at that time) Brian used Roger and Johns they came up with chord sequence in a jam session throughout SMGO also the chord sequence influenced by Pachelbel's Canon. was used which seems far more Freddie than Brian

I thought that too at one point, but for me, it was the difference between the queen you know and then early queen, songs like stone cold crazy, dragon attack, son and daughter, after that, it’s amazing how they went from that, too the household name they are
