We had to figured it all out ourselves. and unfortunately noone speak English. But it’s ok. We still enjoyed it without the curry. It was really good already.
I was told that the rice is special one imported from Thailand. I remember, my first nasi dagang was circa 1989, at Dungun. I was lucky that my first one was the best. That time, no fancy-fancy fried chicken la, daging bakar la... just a simple kari tongkol(tuna)... and I prefer it than nasik lemak as the way its cook/prepared
Based on my family recipe, nasi dagang is made by a quarter of glutinous rice and 3 quarter of regular rice. We steamed it until it almost cooked before pour coconut milk on it and let it cook. For the fish, we boil it first for a long time until the water almost dried up, then we cook the gravy, we put the fish and cook it with slow fire for almost a night. If we make the gravy at 9pm, it will be finished at 3am, and we need to stir it occasionally. For the keropok lekor, usually we knead the fish and sago flour with cold water and for the sauce, we cook the chilli paste with palm sugar and some vinegar until it become thicker. I lived in KL before for 3 years, but i cannot enjoy much the food there, so i bought the spices and the basic ingredients when i back to my hometown and i cook nasi dagang during weekend to cure my tastebud craving. Im glad that both of you enjoyed it. Have a nice stay in Terengganu, where nature embraces heritage.
This was traditionally a dish consumed by Malay Fishermen because it could last longer (most original condiments were either preserved, pickled or deep fried to last) and provided much of the nutrition needed for a tough day ahead. Should have got the keropok/kuah with it..yummy! BTW Dagang means trade.
Good short briefed.. Actually Atas Tol is one of Village in Kuala Terengganu.. The one that JetLag enjoyed was at one of their branches. The main stall is located in Kampung Atas Tol just behind the big tree.
Teh Peng or pronounced as teh beng is ice milk tea (or ice teh tarik) the tea was sweet & frothy because they add honey into the tea.. Btw, we never put sambal onto our nasi dagang.. But we will add extra gravy with cili padi & crush the cili padi into the rice for extra 'kick'
Nasi dangang Terengganu is a mix of gelatinous rice and normal rice. The fish, usually is tuna, boil first before being cook n the curry. If you are going to Kelantan you should try Kelantan nasi dagang, they use different rice, reddish rice, beside nasi dagang Kelantan you should try nas kerabu too. SERUNDING beef or chicken is a must try food, Kelantan are famous for it, but if you are not going to Kelantan try look for them in Terengganu. Serunding can be eaten by itself, with rice or sandwich..
JetLag Warriors you are welcome Remember to try Serunding, beef or chicken. They are actually, meat floss, and are usually sell display in a glass jar or plastic package in the market, maybe you can get them in Pasar Payang, Kuala Terengganu. You can ask any Malay, and they will tell you it taste good.
KT is my birthplace and my wife is from Selangor. My wife learned how to cook Nasi Dagang from my mom. It was from several attempts until my mom finally gave the thumbs up - tasted exactly as she would do it. Two months later, my mom passed away but the recipe lives on. Due to the fact that not all can stomach fish, my mom's recipe has 2 dishes, beef and fish. If you are in KL, come over. I will get my wife to cook nasi dagang for both of you (not daging) hehehe.
Nasi Dagang is a mixture of rice and glutinuous rice while Nasi Lemak is just rice cooked in coconut milk. Nasi Lemak has ginger and onions but Nasi Dagang has ginger, fenugreek, onion and sometimes lemongrass. Nasi Dagang, you must eat the fish curry where the fish is simmer for hours to get the texture. Nasi Lemak is just the sambal.
The authentic Nasi dagang is eaten with mackerel curry or chicken curry and cucumber pickle. Fried chicken is unusual combo..anyway if you like it then should be no problem
Dagang means 'trade' ... closer to the meaning of a person leaving his hometown to do trading somewhere else outside his hometown .. probably nasi dagang originated from traders long time ago that came to trengganu to do trading and ate nasi with tuna .. nasi dagang must be eaten with its curry gravy .. which ivana missed it because the curry gravy was served in the big pot and you need to take it yourself .. so if you are going to have nasi dagang again tomorrow please do not forget the gravy in the big pot .. love you guys .. can't wait to view your video tomorrow .. take care and have fun ya !

I think what you had was nasi lemak the terengganu kind. Nasi dagang served with fish gravy instead of the sambal. The boiled fish and the cucumber salad served both nasi.
As a KL native I've always preferred Terengganu's nasi dagang compared to the Kelantan nasi dagang. Anyway in KT it is actually common for patrons queueing up a line at nasi dagang joints. Not just nasi dagang atas tol but other nasi dagang stalls/restaurants as well. Especially the ones that were viraled on line. Couldn't compare both nasi lemak and nasi dagang since it is 2 different dishes on its own. I like both. It's just a matter of where you get your nasi lemak or nasi dagang.
As i like pulut, i like the Kelantan redish rice nasi dagang which the pulut texture. However the fish, i like the Terenganu version because the fish come in big chunk.
Kerepok Lekor is made from fish and sagu flour. Fried kerepok Lekor has less fishy smell but the boiled ones have stronger fishy smell. You should try the ikan parang kerepok lekor which is a little white in colour compared to the ones you are eating.

It was a good attempt at the keropok lekor. Even for a local Malaysian, I didn't like it when I first ate it. Somehow it grows on you... I like the deep fried version and it has to be crispy not soggy. Good try guys!
Need to put more gravy (kuah) to it..ask for "kuah asing" or separate gravy if you want to try it bit by bit..can apply to everything like "sambal asing"-separate sambal..etc..

Well in terengganu, they have nasi lemak not with anchovies sambal but with tuna sambal (sambal ikan tongkol) the same fish with nasi dagang.. now that would be awesome..
@@aa.r2588 I've been to nasi dagang atas tol before, the staff would usually serve the curry when you take your nasi dagang. So not sure why the curry wasn't there in the video.
If fish is not your thing, go and try nasi Kerabu with grilled chicken, the most famous one is at Fauzi on Jalan Sultan Sulaiman. In fact there are many versions of nasi in Kuala Terengganu. You could have an episode on tasting and comparing nasi lemak (fatty/creamy rice), nasi dagang (merchant rice), nasi minyak (oily rice), nasi kuning (yellow rice), nasi kerabu (blue rice with fresh herbs), nasi kunyit (tumeric rice) and nasi bajet (budget rice). 😋

You missed out the nasi dagang essential component; the mackerel tuna curry (kuah nasi dagang = literally translated as "nasi dagang's gravy"). It is slightly sweet than Indian curries. Local mackerel tuna (ikan tongkol) is its main protein ingredient; not chicken nor other meats can substitute it. The sweet gravy and rich coconut milk rice are inseparable pair in a proper nasi dagang plate. Another one is the vinegary cucumber+carrot+pineapple+onion/shallot pickles. Other components are basically add-ons that we normally don't include in our nasi dagang. You were eating Terengganu nasi dagang. We have a Kelantan variety that uses different rice; a special mix of white and brown rice. Its gravy is lighter coloured (yellowish) compared to Terengganu version that is darker. Kelantan nasi dagang also includes pickles and has a hardboiled egg that Terengganu version does not have.
Tea Peng = Tea Ais. Peng (means ice in Chinese). In Terengganu, we usually say Teh Peng, instead of Teh Ice like in KL. In Malaysia, we tend to mix a lot of languages. haha

I only eat nasi lemak when I moved to KL, when growing up in Kelantan I eat Nasi dagang, Nasi Kerabu or Nasi berlauk ... no such thing as Nasi Lemak.. Nasi lemak is a rare treat hahaha
Teh Peng is actually teh tarik cold version. Same as u make teh tarik which u do the teh tarik then saperate the foam and then put the ice then put the foam back on top just to get the shape as u what u get in the video. Also ofc like most of the comments, Nasi Dagang is a must eat it with fish curry
Nasi Lemak the coconut milk is boiled together with the rice. Nasi Dagang is steamed and halfway the coconut milk is poured separately, and then the rice is steamed again. Because it is steamed, that it is why it is not as sticky and as milky as Nasi Lemak.
6:10 It is similar because both teh tarik and teh ais/peng are milk tea. Tarik means "pull" and the act of pulling is what makes the foam. See this guy tarik 0:52. However, if you order teh tarik, they will serve you the hot one. If you want cold, you need to say teh ais/peng.
Tea peng just same ice tea Malaysian version. Peng come from Chinese word beng, means ice.. You know that you can eat nasi dagang with keropok lekor together, that so good..
The gravy.. thats like 50% of the dish. Intereating fact.. Terengganu state has the best education achievement in the country .. at least at high school level.. due to the population's main diet of fish ..
Hi!, Steve n Ivana, soo enjoying seeing you both enjoying soo much fun eating, always good comments.eazzy pleasing. Stay safe always n happy journey ahead.
Di Terengganu keropok lekor lebih banyak ikan dari tepung. Di Sabah, lebih banyak tepung dari ikan hahaha. Nasiblah baru juga November tahun lalu makan keropok lekor di Dungun.
Guys you need the nasi dagang gravy 😭😭😭... also fried lekor should be crispy outside and airy inside. The boiled one - you cant even find them in KL those are funky.
Hi,maybe u can try nasi campur with budu sauce which is fermented anchovy and also tempoyak at Restaurant Singgang Budu, Kuala Terengganu..or u can try The Panggung@Aroma Kampung Restaurant for the catfish curry with tempoyak .just for your reference 😁
While you guys are in Terengganu, try meeting up with Mat Dan, a famous personality who migrated from UK to Terengganu. He would share with you guys the best dishes and how to have them
A couple of years ago, I was in Terengganu for about 2 weeks to film a documentary about the people of Terengganu, with a small filming crew of 8 people from KL. We literally ate all the time, non-stop, it was almost ridiculous. Every time we stopped filming, we ate. I think we did more eating than filming! The food there were delicious and the people were extremely nice and laid back. We even had random people inviting us to their homes to eat. We even met this Australian guy who is married to a local and been staying in a beautiful small village there for 20+ years. He said his wife keep asking if he wanted to move to or visit KL, as she has a few houses in KL, but he would turn back every time as soon as he sees KL from afar on the highway. He has adopted the kampung life and loves it. He keeps insisting that the real Malaysia is in the east coast, not the cities. Terengganu is a state with endless charm, wether it be with the people, the culture or food. It was an experience I will never forget and cherish forever. I hope you two will enjoy your stay in Terengganu as much as I did or more.

Maybe u guys need to re visit the ns dagang.. the gravy is compulsory.. more umphhh...
Try nasi lemak in terengganu different from KL. It comes with fish like nasi dagang. But with sambal
In the East coast, nasi dagang replaces nasi lemak.
I only eat nasi lemak when I moved to KL, when growing up in Kelantan I eat Nasi dagang, Nasi Kerabu or Nasi berlauk ... no such thing as Nasi Lemak.. Nasi lemak is a rare treat hahaha
True
You can find a slightly different version of nasi dagang in kelantan.
Notice the different kind of rice.
Okay just one more to go(at least) nasi kerabu. Can’t wait.
Ivana is like the best tour guide. If not I think Steve would just mindlessly walking around Malaysia
10:00 that a lots of Lekor for 2 persons, especially when the other persons don't like it...
I suggest u to try 1 unique laksa called laksa sarang burung(bird nest laksa) at Pantai Tok Jembal
While you guys are in Terengganu, try meeting up with Mat Dan, a famous personality who migrated from UK to Terengganu. He would share with you guys the best dishes and how to have them
Love u guys
