Lol, nooo...don't do it! Keep on singing!! Trust me, I feel your pain. I have a range like hers, I looooove opera and Jazz, and I loved singing it when I was younger, then I joined this church. That was the first time I'd performed publicly and they went wild! I wasn't expecting that, nor did I expect what was to follow. I was young, and despite my ability, love for God and singing, I didn't know much about performing. Nor was I prepared for the expectations they'd impose upon me, and the constant comparing I would endure. My beloved (black, church) family expects constant perfection, song choices that will get THEM moving, & don't sing a sing someone else in your community previously made popular, unless you're prepared to kill it. Never mind that the words have special meaning to you & you want to present them in your own way to God, smh. I was also subjected to constant open critique because of my singing style. (They prefer the growling, yelling gospel style or else, you just weren't worthy of the mic, which was ludicrous). I begin to hate performing, and eventually, I thought I hated singing as well. After 16 years, I left that place and I'm finding that I do still love singing! I can still hit my desired notes. I sing around the house, in different churches around my city, and for my extended family. I sing my high notes, my smooth runs and jazzy riffs in front of them, but only for God and I love it now. There's always gonna be someone better, and they'll always be someone who wishes they have your voice. Doesn't matter. If you love it, keep doing it!
