I think you hit the nail on the head with the phrase "mental game". So much of skateboarding is a mental game and about overcoming mental (and literal) obstacles. It's why it's a great sport even as you get older. Like Rodney Mullen said in his TED talk; it is about iteration, progression, using blocks of acquired knowledge to progress, and overcoming that fear that we all have. You have to commit at some point for it to happen.
Dude thanks for the comments. I can’t see ever stopping skateboarding now because with every small step in progression it’s motivation for the next step. Are you getting out there a lot with the nicer weather?
@@Steves_SkateXplosion Absolutely beautiful Golden Week long weekend here in Japan, but a popped something in my quad doing shove-its on Friday, so, R&R here ;). But also waiting on a s/h 9.25 board to arrive on Monday, so keen to see if the extra width gives more stability/confidence
Great video and great progress! I will say, needing more speed was not necessarily the problem. As someone who recently learned to frontside 50-50, it is easier for me to pop onto the ledge or curb with less speed, and that is how I usually warmup before trying to add in speed for a longer grind. What helped me get 50-50 grinds easier was actually learning and practicing 50-50 stalls first. You should try that by placing your board a few inches away from a curb or ledge, sitting parallel, and then work on ollieing into a stationary 50-50. Once you have that down, the moving grinds will be a bit easier! Best of luck!
@@Steves_SkateXplosion I’m 6’ 3 and a bigger guy. I just got a new board not really knowing much about modern decks and components. I have a 8.5 with a tapered tail. Like it so far but feel I may need to go up in size at some point and try a popsicle style! Love your insight on the channel too
Dude I’ve gone through a ridiculous amount of skateboard decks. So many it’s sickening. Old school and popsicles and shaped. I’ve settled in the 8.5-8.8 popsicle range and that works pretty good for my size 12 shoes. You might love an 8.8 or even a 9.0
That’s awesome dude. You could set the object at the edge of the grass so you land in the grass without having to worry about landing and rolling away.
another great video. You are correct about being a well rounded skater. Being able to skate transition and few grinds improves your overall skating. This is why I am looking for an all around board. I see the limitations of my bowl size deck. I need a deck I can ollie , grind and ride transition
@@Steves_SkateXplosion I'm thinking either 8.5 or 8.75. I have an old 8' and 8.125 that I will try out during the week to see what feels better. This should give my an idea of sizing. I think the wheelbase should be 14+ but not bigger than 15
Yeah I love wheelbases around 14.5 to 15 max. I have an 8.5 Dressen with only a 14 wheelbase and it feels too small. But the Cardiel is perfect with an 8.62 width and 14.6 wheelbase.
Excellent work. give those ledges some board stall and nose stall love. Then slides. It all works in the bowl too. Those Ollie's are airs. I just got some elbow pads at the thrift store 12$ finish sewing up my ancient ghetto knee pads and no more excuses for me.
@@Steves_SkateXplosion most days. You can rock over that curb ledge. Board stalls will help your rock too. But after you board slide and nose slide, ledge or coping... You'll be thanking me. Thanks dude. It’s actually pretty wild how the videos evolve because my ones from even just a couple months ago lack the energy and enthusiasm that I have now. I guess with more and more videos I’m loosening up?
🤘 you were pretty much popping out/off 180 towards the end, pretty cool! Is there not a nice low block to kick turn on and board slide there? Thats fun and so easy even I could do it. Use the slippy coated board though!
@@Steves_SkateXplosion well, I think as you can ollie and pop close to 180, you'll have no problem on nice convenient sized size block... some you can just kick turn onto.
Looks to me like you’re more ready for a ride on grind into the bowl. You should try it. You have the mechanics of it already. You will just have to crush your fears and drop in after a short grind on the coping.
OMG dude I’ve been thinking the same thing. I do a very very easy version of that where I’ll ride up and slowly shift into axle stall position and drop in. But it ain’t like you’re saying. Not yet anyway.
@@Steves_SkateXplosion one thing I did was to take the ride on grind until it almost completely stopped and then just dropped in. Basically, you’re combining the ride on grind with an axle stall drop in. You can do the ride on grind and just run out if you are not feeling the drop in. Eventually, you’ll drop on in and realize that there’s nothing to be afraid of.
@@Steves_SkateXplosion th-cam.com/video/KGnx4TjJMRU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=PXfOhbGNrWsCL4C1 absolutely. I did my best fakie grind in ages. Jon Bishop joined the over 50 club recently. Whoa cool. I skated a couple 9.25 decks up until recently. That was my go to size while I got more comfortable. Now I’m down to the 8.5 to 8.8 range.
Man dude ,you're an awesome motivation driver, your videos are Gold
Oh man that’s so nice of you to say. Thank you!
Nice job! You’ll get those Ollie 50-50 grinds soon!! Once you do, it’s so addicting!
We’ve got a downtown skatepark here that has the perfect ledges for working up to 5050 grinds so I’ll grab some video of that before long.
i love grinding. i like doing airs. i dont have any time left for the flippy trick things
Same here man. We gotta be somewhat selective because there’s so much to learn and so little time.
