- From a old collection of Beta tapes I had in a shoebox which had a number of tapes of WGN9 and TV 44 WSNS broadcast games from the early 80s and later transferred to DVD in 2002 now digitalized and up on youtube for the first time.
This one from TV 44 5/6/80 Comiskey Park Kansas City Royals vs Chicago White Sox Larry Gura vs Rich Wortham with play by play from Harry Caray and Jimmy Piersall includes pre game interviews and Baseball Report post game and scoreboard

I love watching these old White Sox games at Comiskey Park! It brings back some great memories. Thank you for adding these!
Same
10,000 fans at the Cubs game earlier in the day and 10,000 fans at the Sox game that night. Even though school was still in session it was a poor day for attendance for both Chicago teams. I used to go to both of the teams games. Great to see Harry Carry with Jimmy Piersall announcing the Sox game.
i lived in LA then. dodgers always led mlb in attendance because owner refused to televise home games...9and the good weather helped too)
I knew Harry originally did Cardinals games but I didn't realize he worked for the White Sox before coming to the Cubs.
I remember him more for Sox games.
Great to hear Harry & Jimmy
I love watching these Comiskey Park TV44 White Sox games, I do want to make a huge request to the uploader, if the commercials are on these tapes please leave them in there for now on going forward for future uploads. It really completes the time machine experience like on the Fuzzy TV Memories uploads of White Sox games from this same era.
Dam! Would be absolutely perfect if the commercials were in this. I loved channel 44 when I was a kid.
I agree that's the only thing that's missing is the commercials. That completes the whole time machine experience.
Sorry guys not gonna happen..I only leave commercials that relate to sports or station promos or movie tv spots..not going to include paint stores and bs ads..only sports related I understand the time machine thing but those ads suck just slows it up
@@pheniafilmsthemlbarchiveso9229 I would think that not editing them out would speed things up considerably for YOU in posting them. Viewers can always skip over them. Thanks for leaving the WBMX spot, though.
This Royals team would go on to cruise to the AL West Championship. They got real hot in July and August and we're arguably the best team in the baseball in 1980. However, they caught a hot Phillies team in postseason.
The Phillies were the best team in baseball in 1980
A well-known mixologist..classic!
These are GREAT videos. The game so well rounded in the late 70s thru most the 80s. I'm loving these and I'm not a White Sox fan. I just love watching how all facets of the game come into play. That said, a Rangers game would be awesome. Thank you for sharing these!
Al Oliver is in my HOF.
I have been a cubs fan all my life and It took me 59 years to finally become a white sox fan after watching these nice thrilling games on the replay, what took me so long
Please bring on more SOX in those collared uniforms. Yes, it is not the magical year of 1977, but some of the characters remained the same in 1980 and 1981. Especially great to "revisit" Comiskey Park.
Are there any full 1977 games out there other than the one vs the blue Jay's ??
caray and piersall outstanding
Just as good as our Phillies Kalas and Ashburn.
I love Nancy Faust playing the "Rocky" theme at the beginning of the interview....lol
Love the 1980 White Sox-please keep the new videos coming! Great work!!
Enjoyed the post game interview.
Just watched this and for those who think a 2-0 game is boring, it was chock full of good pitching and defense. A spot pitcher fills in for Steve Trout and got a shutout!
Thank you, gotta love TV 44 Sox games, especially with the pre and post game coverage!
I was at the game the night before and saw ben olgvie charge the mound and remember seeing his teammate holding him back on the ground like that, first time in 40 years seeing that! 😃
8-year-old me did not like it when Tex Wortham pitched.
The season that George Brett hit .390 I believe.
Yes it was!
Tony LaRussa’s first full-year as a MLB manager.
Big mistake
Too bad hes back. God help us!
As a New Yorker, all I had to do was hear Mike Proly say two words and I said, "I know that accent. There's no mistaking that." Looked it up and sure enough: Jamaica, NY. Went to high school in Mineola. College, St. John's.
I'm not sure if these White Sox uniforms were the worst in baseball history, but they are certainly in the Top Ten...
It is good to see Bobby Detherige play. In my Best of the 80s project, which I have several videos about on TH-cam, when I replayed 1980, Detherige was on fire and then he just stopped playing. I contacted Detherige on Facebook and he was gracious to answer my question about what happened in his career and he said that Jim Frey just didn't like him and sent him back down to the minors even though he was batting .308 with a .833 OPS with the Royals. He also made a real night running catch in this game so he looked good defensively too. He should have had a better chance in the game. If Frey didn't like him, then he should have just traded him and let another team give him a chance.
Not many games of Detherige out there this might be the only one..is there anyway you can check with him? I’d be happy to send him a copy/link via Dropbox or at least let him know about this youtube upload (was thinking of that when I put up this game) 👌✌️
@@pheniafilmsthemlbarchiveso9229 I'm sorry I don't. I just searched for him on facebook back in 2016 and that's how I found him. That's a great idea as he seemed like a great guy from the time I interacted with him and it bothers me to this day that he didn't get more of an opportunity.
I see a Bob Detherage on Facebook who is a friend of formal Royal Art Kusnyer. That is probably him.
@@fortmyersroyal please let him know this game is out there..only played a few MLB games I’m sure hed be thrilled to see
I saw the Yankees play the White Sox at Yankee stadium back in 1981.
Harry Caray (PBP) & Jimmy Piersall (C) 1-3/7-9
Joe McConnell (PBP) 4-6
Love the interview!
1:46:11 - "come on Banny, you can hit that garbage he's throwing up there"
Jim Morrison almost "broke (the ball) on through to the other side" when he flew out deep to left @52:39 ... This must have the most fly ball outs in a single game in history. Anybody able to look that Stat up? I'm curious about it.
Love your good work, thank you. It may slightly predate VHS but anything from from the '77 hitmen would be a something.
A lot of oddities for the Royals in this one. Their outfield was in shambles at this point in 1980.
I started following the Royals in maybe '78 or so and I almost never saw Hal McRae play the field. By '82 or later, you NEVER saw it. From what I've heard, he could barely throw anymore because of prior rotator injury. The few times he would have to throw from deep in the outfield, he would almost sling it underhand.
And Bob Deathridge in RF....never have heard of him. Apparently, he had a cup of coffee with the Royals to patch these holes.
Umpires (13:52)
HP Jim McKean
1B Ted Hendry
2B Larry Barnett (Crew Chief)
3B Jim Evans
Why they sent chappas down to the minors is beyond me, he was a good player
RIP Quiz.
At 22:38 Harry talks about his trip to Wrigley Field to see the game earlier in the day between the Cubs and Padres and Jimmy asked him who he pulled for. You would think since Harry will be a Cub Fan and a Bud Man, he would enthusiastically say "The Cubbies, of course, what a stupid question." But no, Harry doesn't answer the question and instead says he wanted to see Dave Winfield and Ozzie Smith. I found that interesting.
That's because he hated the Cubs until he worked for them...makes sense, having been a Cardinals & White Sox announcer.
Harry went to Wrigley to begin negotiations to come to the Cubs. He didn't want to play his hand. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
Now that so many games from Wrigley have been uploaded, it appears to be the best town to play baseball. The closeness of the fans and the loyalty to players like Buckner. Why Dave Kingman left Chi is beyond me. You can't put a price on appreciation and Wrigley had it for him esp in 1979, 48 homers 118 rbi's AND Kingman batted .288. His statistical success, fan support, moola, .. why leave for NY again to bat .204?😊
$3 for box seats!
Last season Bill Veeck owned the team
Sox always led the league in garbage on the field. Miss old Comiskey!
Amazing footage! Love 70's-80's baseball.....but boy are those some ugly Sox unis!
Those Sox unis....wtf?
best to turn off the sound . tune out a blabbering boozer. " Greetings with Champagne "is what he meant
As a 90's kid born in 84, I hated Harry Caray growing up. He sold his soul to the Cubs.
youre a moron
Well, we can thank Eddie Einhorn for that. Harry wanted no part of Sportsvision, which turned out to be a flop!!!
Lousy broadcast, amateur hour
You say that in my neighborhood and see how quickly you'll be carried off
