    Your video is still paying dividends to the Public. Thank you Jimthecarguy. I feel a lot less apprehensive about replacing the rear shocks on my 2003 Saturn VUE. At 75k miles it had decent, almost stiff handling but then I let it set for three years starting in 2018. Giving it a test spin before selling in 2021, both front brake hoses had collapsed at the guide clip, the starter solenoid stuck, a right rear brake fitting started leaking, and now both rear shocks are kaput. And oh, a shovel was needed to scoop up the rust...but the engine and transmission are good and the interior and the visible exterior look good. But the rear shocks do not cost that much, and you make it look pretty straightforward and no reason not to do the work to ensure a safe ride for the next owner. Thanks again.

    Great video, thanks Jim. One thing learned by experience - put the wheel well fasteners back first, before the ones around the fender edge. Here in the north, salt eats up the brackets and you may have to put a finger behind the bracket to hold it while inserting the fastener. As long as the edge isn't fastened yet, that's easy.

    Great video thanks. I'm a student and this video will save me hundreds. I got quoted for $3500 in maintenance today. That's more than the cost of my car. Nice tutorial. I just did this same job & would only add 2 things.....(1)For those doing it in their driveway without a lift, take the mud skirt all the way off. You dont have to but it just makes it easier & you dont risk breaking it.
    (2) For this job or any job, big or small, where those plastic push pins/snap rivets need to be removed...go get some push pin pliers at harbor freight. They're like $8. They make removing those little bastards a breeze. You can use a flathead & it works most of the time, but I've encountered several that were either so old & deformed or brittle, or were located in a spot that was hard to get a screwdriver in, I couldnt get them out with a screwdriver. Those same ones came right out with the pliers. Sure you can just buy new push pins but if you dont mangle them because you removed them with the correct tool, you dont need to.

    Wonderfully straightforward video and we appreciate the fast forwards too. Here in the Midwest things are a bit rusty. We did the fronts just fine but the rear shocks are proving a bit of a challenge due to a rusty bolt. The lower bolt was quite rusted and I freed it and cleared the holding nut but now the bolt just rotates stuck to the metal sleeve in the bushing of the lower shock. I can't get it out. Top bolt comes out easy as there is not rust. Any ideas on how to free this sucker. I have sprayed it with penetrating oil to no avail. Right now it just squeaks and rotates the whole bushing. Thank you in advance!!

  • @MatthewFordVictoria

    The rear ones look much easier than I thought. I was told I should get my shocks pumped up to handle the weight of a Lift on the back for transporting an Electric Wheelchair. Does that mean I need to remove the existing ones and have new ones put in? Or can the shocks I already have be pumped up somehow to raise the back up a bit, counteracting the weight of the chair when it's on? If I have to replace them, what kind should I get? I have a 2007 V6 Saturn VUE .

    Hi Jim, great video, Wife's Saturn Vue XE 2008 needs both front struts and rear shocks, plan to do myself (done this type of work on my vette moons ago). Just a couple of questions based on this video... my gun is single hammer (is this adequate for the job?), and sometimes has issues getting bolts off tires at 100Ft/lbs. torque, but mostly works. So, looking at your video, what type of gun are you using? Is it safe to assume that it is dual hammer? If so, what PSI is it set to? My concern with using the gun (dual hammer) to tighten the bolts on the bolts for the shocks and struts is over tightening based on a gun that can exert crazy torque (400ft/lbs. I think for some dual hammers?) on the bolts to either strip the bolt or nut receivers... so clearly some of this is "feel" but is there some guidance on how "tight" it should be outside using the FSM to find and use a torque wrench on the bolts? I didn't see any mention of it in the video, so I'm curious since I've seen both methods used... i.e. just nail it with gun or use torque wrench and dial it in.... can you provide some feedback? Thank you. Chris

    The fact that it is a Vue should be in the title. Saturn has quite a few different models and most of them have front and rear struts. The method for the front struts is similar on all, but only a couple models use rear shocks.

    • @AraceaeFanatics
      @AraceaeFanatics 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You may not need to, but it doesn't hurt to spray any bolts you'll be removing. Remember you're spraying any accessable threads of the bolt, not the head of the bolt. And I'm pretty sure the bottom bolt is the same size. He doesn't appear to be changing the socket between the removal of replacement of both.

    • @AraceaeFanatics
      @AraceaeFanatics 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For future reference for others, the answer is yes. Any time you work on anything that is suspension related, you need an alignment afterwards. The only thing repairable on the suspension that doesn't require this after the repair are the sway bar end links.

    Thanks for your video. One question in mind. On the rear shocks there is a small hole or mark in the middle. Is there a difference when you put the shocks in if the hole or mark is outside or inside? I have seen a similar video who recommended that the mark has to be inside.

    This is baffling me I'm going to put some coilovers on my dad's Redline and all I want is a basic video just show me the how to you know things like torque tools needed and any things that you might get hung up on but apparently nobody and all of the Google has ever replace struts or made a video or even a freaking brat about it I know the car is lame but come on so is this car
