    Born and raised. Precovid, there was something called doors open mke. It happens in September and a bunch of Milwaukee businesses that are usually closed off to the public open their doors to everyone for a few days. The coolest ones we’ve gone to was the safe house, a few private art collections, and the upper floors of the USA bank building. The promenade on the river is so fun to walk with friends in the summer. Seeing all of these places I go passed daily being appreciated by people who don’t come from Milwaukee is really fantastic and I’m glad other people can appreciate it. There’s A LOT of issues with Milwaukee, with segregation and gentrification, but it’s a beautiful city and one day will be an amazing city.

      Doors Open Mke was online in 2020 and our video of the Basilica of St Josephat was featured on it. We'd love to be able to attend the 2021 edition, assuming it is in person again :)

    I lived in Milwaukee from 1947 to 1973 and there were things on this list I never saw--I live in Boston area now and Milwaukee is so under-rated. I love it. I come there 1-2 a year. I know some people leave Milwaukee and never come back. Maybe they are ashamed to say they are from Milwaukee. That's stupid.
    I love MKE and I learned a lot from this documentary. I might add 3-4 other areas: UW-M, and Marquette U. areas, the Sherman park Neighborhood; and of course Bronzeville and sites along Prospect Avenue like the Barnett Art Gallery and the Jewish Museum of Milwaukee at 1360 No. Prospect Ave. Excellent small museum. Go, Bucks! Go, Brewers and Go, Packers!

      yup it gets worse every year , don't forget to CC when you are in the city. Bring plenty of money for all the parking tickets you'll get. Last july got a ticket for being in a snow lane WTF???? oh and don't forget the homeless train to no where that no one rides. It's called the Hop and has killed people. Oh and don't forget to bring extra smokes for everyone on the street begging. Ask Milwaukees mayor why he rounded up all the homeless right before a political event in milwaukee and sent them to all the outlining WOW counties ???? it was great calling the cops while walking through a park and seeing well there is a reason we called the cops.

    • @xheralt
      @xheralt 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dudereally9315 So wrong, I almost don't even know where to begin. Parking _can_ be tight, especially on the East Side neighborhoods. The "snow lane" sounds like it was being held open for other reasons, like emergency vehicle access to a major facility; pay attention to signs next time! Don't give to panhandlers, "Keep the Change" (or the smokes or whatever). I'm not the Mayor, but given how angry and tightly wound politics are (especially after that insurrection in DC) I can see extra security is necessary. Could be a disguised assassin lying in wait. Milwaukee is far from the first to take such precautions. And your last sentence isn't even coherent, you're so carried away with rage, so I can't address it.

      I was thinking sometime in mid-November I would go but I’ll have to wait and see so I don’t rack up too much CC bills in a short span of time since I’m planning to go to New Orleans in September. If not November I can always go sometime in 2023. Only disadvantage for Milwaukee in November in my opinion is the daylight being very short due to DST. Sunsets are like 4:30 come late fall and winter time but at the same time I do wanna see what an early sunset looks like there 😅

    Great video! Planning my itinerary to visit Chicago and Milwaukee.
    (Hopefully US will open for tourists from France!)
    My plan to visit is on July-August . Your video helps me a lot. Question is it super hot that month, also is it necessary to rent a car or the transportation in downtown is good like here in Paris? Thanks

    • @JamesandLaurent
      @JamesandLaurent  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, it is VERY hot in the summer. Chicago is at the same latitude as Barcelona and Milwaukee at the same latitude as Perpignan. But it is a continental climate here. The temperature is not necessarily hotter than in Southern France, but it is a lot more humid and therefore more oppressive on your body and makes you sweat more.
      Public transportation in Chicago is not as good as in Paris, but still manageable. You do not want to deal with a car in downtown Chicago. LizzyFay has an excellent TH-cam video on Chicago public transportation. Milwaukee is a little bit more difficult. But because it is a smaller city, you can walk to most places or rent a bike (same as VeloLib).
      The big question is how to go from Chicago to Milwaukee. You can either rent a car one-way, or take the Amtrak train, or the Greyhound bus. If you take the train, the Hop (street car in Milwaukee) goes all the way to the train station and takes you downtown for free.
      Depending on how long you stay in Chicago, we have three videos about Chicago, one about the Top 10 free things to do (exact same video as this Milwaukee video), one about the Top 10 museums, and one about things to do off the beaten path.
      We hope you enjoy your trip. These two cities are a lot less touristy than New York or San Francisco, but they are both underrated gems.

    Believe it or not, Milwaukee, before 1860, was run by the Irish. That all changed when a Lake Steamer, The Lady Elgin, went down coming back from Chicago. All the Irish politicians and Irish "big shots" went down with the ship. The Germans quickly took over.

      @badguy1481 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JamesandLaurent In 1860, the Irish militias in Milwaukee were considered a threat by the then governor of Wisconsin. WHY? Because the state, at that time, was actually considering succession from the USA because many people in the state considered the Federal Government complicit in the institution of slavery. As a result, the Governor was concerned that the Irish militias would side with Federal troops to quash the state's rebellion. (The Irish, at that time, were afraid that the freeing of slaves would cause many Irish to lose their low wage jobs to freed Blacks). As a result, he ordered the militia's guns confiscated.
      So, of course, the Irish Militia wanted to re-arm. To do that they needed money. One way to get that money was to sponsor a cruise "excursion" to Chicago to attend the Republican Presidential convention. A side benefit of that would probably be they could offer resistance to the selection of Lincoln as the Republican nominee.
      And that's what they did. The took the Lake Steamer, "The Lady Elgin" down to Chicago. After a day of participation in the political hul-a-baloo, they reboarded the ship and began the return trip to Milwaukee. When the ship reached to a point on the lake about 40 miles north of Chicago, they were struck by an out of control sailing vessel going in the opposite direction (to Chicago). The ship took massive damage and began to sink. Many people were able to abandon the ship. But many of them died in the cold water of Lake Michigan. Even the ones that made it to shore were killed by waves splashing against rocks on the shore. It's estimated that 300 people died.
      Many of Milwaukee's Irish elites died in that disaster. The German immigrants who began arriving in Milwaukee from 1840 to 1860 were well established by that time. That's why many of Milwaukee's German Beer breweries started during that period.
      Since so many of the Irish elites were now gone, the Germans took over the city.
