FINALLY an actual vlog instead of a news station -- I've been searching for something exactly like this for AGES with this current storm. All of the news channel interviews are exactly the same and just focus on the buying/store/long lines aspect versus the actual prep work at home. This is super educational. At 20minutes, I am reminded that the electric utility crews that I worked with installed "pole-top split bolts" at 90 degrees like you described. They provided a great deal amount of resistance to top splitting.

Couple things. For those relying on gas generators. Don’t overlook filling your boat gas tanks as well. Get you a hand pump from Harbor Freight. It was a life saver after Katrina and gave us a few more days of running while the gas stations were brought back online.
The other tip is to thin out your beautiful oak tree. They will act like a sail getting pushed on by the wind and wet grounds and their roots don’t run deep enough, even 100 year old ones will push over from the storm. I know it’s too late now but something to think about in the future.
Very good point and I should have mentioned it. My boats are full and so is my mower. I have AA powered fuel pumps for removing fuel.
Andrew I hope you and Tiffany stay safe. You just may look like a genius after this is all over by adding those big bolts in your roof posts. Tiffany, no breakfast on the Blackstone. Seriously, praying for your family safety and minimal/no damage to your beautiful home.

I must admit, you do have an edge on me, and that is good. We all can learn more. ✔️
The hundred dollar limit is usually a pump limit. I first ran into it back in 2005 with a ford explorer with 2 tanks, pump would cut off at $50. The limit is there to keep thefts down. Some enterprising individuals with a stolen CC and an IBC tank in the back of a pickup can pilfer a lot of gas in a very short time so they put in limits to deter that sort of thing.
I’ll take snow storms over hurricanes any day of the week. Keep on keepin on
Well one thing for those of us that like to be prepared. If the solar gens run out. Fire up the Generator off my propane and charge them up... Then were up and rolling again. I find it entertaining that my friends and family pick on me for being prepared. Guess who they come to when things go south.... That's right..... Me, the prepared one..... You can believe I give them all kinds of business about it too... But I always do what I can to help. Just the right thing to do.

$2.30 per litre (aud) in Australia we are paying. For those playing along at home 3.3L to the gallon.

We started Saturday preparing for storm
The $100 limit has to do with the pre-authorization that most gas stations use to prevent getting ripped off, if you are buying more than $100 in diesel try a truck stop since they cater to bigger fuel consumers. It may look strange but they regularly pump out 2-300 gallons at a time.

It looks like you are right in the path to me. Excellent video!!! You even showed this long time New Englander some things I never thought of. Our noreasters in the winters are similar to hurricanes only add snow.

Andrew, I would also add the 6x6 plates to either side of those posts, that would help prevent more/possible post end flaring. I dealt with the similar force on a post in that direction and had to engineer a plate when using posts to jack up my roof overhangs when I replaced my columns. Also, your family and farm critters are always welcome over at my homestead here in Mississippi in case you really need to bug out.

With gas stations cutting off the card, go inside and prepay for fuel… prevents the cutoff.
Most gas stations here shut off at either $75 or $100 mark. It’s aggravating to say the least.
Especially since gas is so high and showing no signs of dropping.

Tying down your porch roof looks perfect. We were building a pavilion in the architect. Had a specific drawn out mechanically engineered base of the posts, it did not look like it would work but he explained and showed us in the totality of the assembly. Assembly it was stronger than any other connection😮 and it was after we looked at it. We all agreed engineers earn their money

Also, if you are using your card at the pump some companies have a limit for charging outside for security reasons.Try going on the inside to use bank card it should be unlimited 🙏🏻

The 100 dollar gas thing is US Wide. I live in AZ now, But moved here from Wa State and it was the same in both places. Pain in the A$$
It is! If fuel is going to stay sky high, they need to up the limit.
14:40 need to invest in a whole home surge protector, dedicated surge protector for central air and lighting/emp protector for solar
Have one for the AC and an entire main panel surge protector. It's never went out 🤷

Yes all pumps cut off here in Nashville at 100 have a lawn care been dealing with this for years use to be 50 the 75 now a 100 non ethanol 4.15 as of this message

Ian kicked the crap out of us last year, there are a lot of houses that are not even repaired yet. That storm was supposed to hit up where this storm is going. Ya never know when or if they change out of the blue. I hope it fizzles out for everyone's sake!

When you filled up your small gas container for your chainsaw, did you run a couple of gallons of the ethanol free gas into your truck first? That is a good practice to be in to run all of the other possible gas out of the line before you fill your container.

Up here in Ohio, we have a saying "Its not the Wind that gets you, its the Pickup Truck in the wind that gets you". Bunkers are built underground. That little thing you have may protect against a low energy wind event, but take it from a Midwesterner, a Tornado with rip that thing out of the ground and toss it. I am assuming your Water Table is just below Ground level as to why you built above ground. You might want to consider using that new Back Hoe on your new Tractor to dig up a hundred dozen yards of soil then pile it around and over to give you the mass it needs to withstand serious winds and the debris in those winds. We call those Root Cellars up here.
Lol you are correct about the water table. This will absolutely handle a hurricane the way it's designed. We typically don't have flying vehicles in a hurricane, nor do we get those monster tornados your referring to.
No Tornados, no snow (mostly) and I see your Daylight is about 12 hrs mid-winter versus the 9 hrs I get.... tempting :) @@TKCL
No snow here since 89, we did get an ice storm about 5 years ago. Just be prepared for crazy high humidity, hurricanes, bugs and lightning.

If this thing is coming near you and you are low lying, just go ahead and evacuate. In Louisiana, we went through H Rita and there was 20ft storm surge. The National Guard was rescuing people who didnt evacuate from rooftops, with Blackhawk helicoptors. You might drown in that shelter if the storm surge is high enough. When it rolls in, it will be fast. There is a supermoon which equals higher tides than a normal full moon too. Storm surge backs up into rivers, creeks etc and floods even more..plus the rainfall. We couldnt get back to our house for a week after Rita until waters receeded enough. Even our kids school which was higher ground got 6ft of water.
I'm around 100ft above sea level and we built towards the top of our hill. No risk of flooding in the shelter other than ground runoff.
@@TKCL Oh that's good! Flooding is the worst! We are at about 135ft & rolling hills.

I would have put a six x six metal plate on each side to keep the post compressed.

As a veteran hurricane person, all the preparations have been done. Floridians should be prepared but a lot do not. Have had to rescue to many in the past from post hurricanes.
