Lightfall is almost certainly gonna go down in history as one of Destiny's most infamous expansions ever. As we all know, that probably isn't for all the best reasons. But Lightfall is now over a year old and, as we close the book on Lightfall and head into The Final Shape; I thought it'd be fun to go back and take a comprehensive look at the year of Lightfall. Everything it did right, everything it did wrong, and everything in between. This is bound to be a long video as I plan to cover everything from Season of The Seraph all the way to Season of The Wish and where we are today. So strap in and welcome to the Lightfall Retrospective!

There are some lore reasons as to why at least some of the pyramid ships were empty.
One could view Europa's as being either ours or Eramis' depending on who won between us. It is clear from Shadowkeep that The Witness was trying to groom us into becoming a disciple. Even tempting us with Statis to do so. However we had Elise to act as the 'angel on our shoulder'. So while we gladly took statis, we refused to follow The Witness.
The lunar pyramid of course was Nerazecs that crashed into the moon during the Collapse. And Nezzy was killed by Savathun.
As for the one that was on Io, idk. But even Rhulks pyramid seemed empty outside of the Scorn and Taken he summoned. Like these ships could house an entire city, you can look out from anywhere in Rhulks pyramid and see that.
I don't know if this is true, but based on the cutscene where the Witness was formed, it kinda looks like the pyramids are part of the architecture. So I kinda always assumed the vessels were part of that civilization before it merged. That kinda explains why it looks like a city inside if the people actually lived there or did so if they were spacefaring too.
Again, I have no idea if this is true at all. It's just kinda my headcanon.

@@emeraldfrog2237 That is indeed correct. In fact, the ships we enter aren't even named, per se, we just call them whatever the first location inside it is called, aside from the Typhon Imperator and the RoN raid ship, which is apparently called "Essence"
The actual reason: bungo is to lazy to make a new race so they said f this and just made one guy with PowerPoint presentation ( Beware of Overdelivery, You're Creating Patterns )
Personally I LOVE the increased difficulty of Neomuna... you cant one shot body shot a redbar enemy and actually have to aim and utilize your abilities and even environment, thats great!

I really enjoy hearing your perspective on this retrospective. It's hard these days to not have someone clickbaiting or rage-baiting, going completely over-the-top one way or another. It's hard to get nuanced takes these days and this video, while not only entertaining, nails it fantastically. There were some parts of Lightfall that were good, some that were bad, and most that was in-between.

I’m sticking with my opinion I’ve had since the beginning that strand should have been fully unlocked after on the verge with headlong being its own quest mission separate from the campaign (I still don’t think we ever got the special gl or the pulse in the promotional material… the ones with the same kind of look as epochal integration)

I was disappointed by lightfall, but im still so excited to see what more destiny has to offer that I cant wait for Final Shape. I love this world that Bungie has created

As somebody who watches a lot of gaming content, including a whole lot of retrospectives on older games, it's cool to get one for the game that me and my friends have sunk the most time into together.
I think one really cool part about the video, is how positive you were about the upcoming content that bungie used to fill the gap between Wish/Final Shape, and you didn't even know how insane Into the Light was going to end up being.
Honestly, Into the Light is the closest we've ever got to the Age of Triumph release in the final year of D1, and that is high praise coming from somebody who absolutely loved that time in Destiny.
Toad it was a pleasure to watch this video. I really do enjoy how all your videos flow , the time flies by super fast. I didnt even realise it was a 30 minutes video. You are one of my favourite content creators I have ever watched. Please keep up the good work!

To say that hype was at an all-time high was both very true, and in a way, an understatement. Between the Lightfall trailers, the different Exotics and Strand, and all the changes coming to the game (loadouts, difficulty scalars, armour mods, etc) seeing the final trailer that dropped 24 hours before had me almost scared as to what was going to happen, in a good way.
Of course, hindsight exists and I feel that if Lightfall’s narrative was better (less forced comedy and focus on Strand, more focus on the structure of the story and a Veil explanation) it would have been the best update and expansion to the game
This is my first time seeing your channel and I just wanted to say this: HUUUUGE props for the production quality/editing. I’ve started making content recently and now more than ever appreciate content like this. The hours are worth it, great video:)

My only complaint is the icon of the raid being on nneomua and not near the traveler. Wouldn't it make more sense for a raid near the traveler to be near the traveler.......thats my 3 sense fight me later

Lightfall certainly didn't make me feel better about Bungie or Destiny going forward. After nine years of trying to be positive for this franchise, it wears on you.

My Lightfall synopsis is content wise honestly the best year I’ve been in. Unfortunately story wise (in the DLC itself the seasons had pretty good story imo) disappointing which caused a chain reaction souring the entire community. The sour taste of the community loomed over the entire year and felt bad despite my personal enjoyment of the year.
23:00 a small change they could have added in the cutscene is have Immaru do the resurrection thing in the corner while Ikora and the guardian run to Eris, to avoid any confusion.

one thing i will glaze lightfall for is strand, the concept and execution of how the abilities work was fucking amazing, the whole thing about the strands being the LITERAL FABRIC OF REALITY and titans being the ones to rip and tear through them, hunters gracefully dancing with them, and warlocks reweaving them to their will, was the coolest part about the DLC
also i was REALLY worried how they were going to explain cayde coming back, but the way they did it is actually insane

Thank you for making this beautiful lightfall retrospective. as a veteran D2 player who decided to stop playing after Bungie introduced sunsetting I find that your wonderful sense of hope and optimism for the game is encouraging me to get back on the path of the light and join my fellow guardians and my fireteam one last time :)

I can say confidently that lightfall as a whole, is definitely the expansion my friends and I played the most, and we’ve been playing Destiny since 2014. This i KNOW is due to them adding loadouts. It’s crazy just how much more fun the game got with that simple addition. It gave us a reason to actually really grind our other characters. About 40% of every season is spent by us just making loadouts on all our characters, making transmogs to go with all the loadouts and actually trying out builds and way more exotics that we’d never use before. And while I didn’t really do any of the seasons stories because I get deathly bored of the way they make us do them, my friends all completed every seasons story this time around. For the entirety of Destiny 2 for some reason we’ve only played 2 out of the 4 usual seasons they release with an expansion. Other than the story and the raid difficulty, imo lightfall was the best expansion for my group fun wise.

The highlight of my friend and I’s run through the campaign was finding Datto Jez and Daniel at Neomuna and t posing in front if Jez.
I've been playing since roughly the mid point of season of Arrivals. So i may not hold as much experience as some of the other veterans, but, after playing through every expansion, especially those that were not yet vaulted (R.I.P. Red War, Curse of Osiris, Warmind, and Forsaken). I have faith that Bungie won't mess up their finishing lap of a decade long saga. Especially with everything that's been going on, I believe that they're putting in every bit of effort, pulling on all the strings of unanswered questions and mysteries to bring us something that's more than just a satisfying finish to the Saga.
I will continue to play destiny, I will see it to the end, and whether that means i have to get Destiny 3 or something else, i don't care. I love destiny, through thick and thin. Lightfall was fun, and i'm always happy to play what Bungie gives us... Even if it is admittedly worse than expectations that were set.

I personally think that Lightfall would have been amazing IF they told us what the Vail is, killed Nimbus instead of Rohan (if would have been more fitting), and made calus a better villain.

There was some lore about a guardian getting controlled by Nezerec and was forced to kill his ghost and rip out his eyeballs, that is really effing disturbing… but imagine if we got to see that in real time during RON. I think it would make it a lot better, it would show how powerful Nez is and would really give you a memorable experience.
Seraph was my favourite time in gaming. Period. I adored that season and the game during it.
So to open Lightfall's first mission and be thrust into a mission that had nothing backing it I was more than a little disappointed. Like we had just spent months with Osiris learning about this hidden stronghold and that it's likely on Neptune but that's as far as we really got, then we jump into mission one of lightfall and osiris is raving about the veil like he knows it's the most important plot hook of the expansion while we had next to nothing on it or even confirmation of a city on Neptune (look back at beyond light and our cautious entry to europa's wastes to deal with a distress call or to the witchqueen where we need to rush to mars to assess the situation).
In lightfall, pale megamind rocks up to our god and home and says u all suck and we proceed to sprint away with osiris who has been gifted knowledge and decided not to share with us... like it just doesn't flow well at all or follow our guardian (or the vanguard's) behaviour. Our going to neptune is almost entirely to make sure osiris is safe for Ikora meanwhile he knows where we need to go and what to do.
Now I hate unconstructive criticism so what I think they should have done is thrown us into some massive battle jumping between pyramid ships or assaulting calus' leviathan as they all approach the traveller only to hitch a ride as they mysteriously turn tale and flee to neptune with us getting comms from osiris on what what limited stuff he's learned in THE FEW HOURS (Cutscene wise) since we stopped eramis and learned about "the veil" and neptune's mysterious secret stronghold. Osiris does annoyed and confused very well and even in the lightfall campaign but I have played it and now gone and done lore reading about it and I'm still a little lost as to why the veil is accessible via vexnet (see the strike) or how it has anything to do with neomuna's citizens (is it not just a giant paracausal fungus they're hiding from the witness? they don't even know how to tap into it... they made the metaverse with it like come on.
anyway... lightfall could've been better and I wish we could explore more of the city itself
The problem about Lightfall is that TWQ seasons did a poor job to lead us there besides season of the Haunted.
The Veil should have been mentioned more before as something the witness was seeking (even without naming it) and give us the premise that it would be a “race” between us and the Witness.
Instead it was just a last minute thing, and us going to Neomuna was also last minute as a “see i’m not crazy” from Osiris.
I think the mishandling came from Plunder, we gather Nezarec’s relics to wake up Osiris, but imo he should have woke up halfway through it with fogged memories, and have the “Nezcafé” be a way for him to clear Savathun’s memories to learn about Neomuna and the Veil.

I still think that a theory my friend and I came up with for Lightfall's story would have been so much cooler:
The Witness does something that cuts us off from our light, and through that absence of the light we discover strand and master it in order to reconnect to the light and fight off the Witness's and Calus's forces.
Wait the light actually fell in your concept????? This expansion needed to be dark
The new void super for titans lets other guardians grab the axes so it makes me wonder if they can do something like that for arc and solar

Every time The Veil is mentioned in the Lightfall campaign, we here in the comments and Toad all take a shot
When they said that Lightfall was the beginning of the end, they meant the literal beginning. If the end was the entire alphabet, we got just the letter A, maybe a B.
A week out from The Final Shape, I think Lightfall was a good year in total. We’ve had some real low points, but Into the Light saved the game. This may not have been the year for story, but it was the year for quality of life upgrades. If this wasn’t marketed as a full DLC and as a filler DLC (akin to Rise of Iron), it would have been received much better. In fact, if we had one filler DLC that brought quality of life changes between major expansions, I think it would be a good model for Destiny.

I'm in-different to lightfall now. Mostly due to burn out having dropped out during the half way point of season of the deep and only now coming back during the long wait period of Season of the wish and am currently playing catch up of all the seasonal stuff i missed (mostly deep and Witch content, i finished wish day 2 of my time back.) Lightfall was over hyped during that period between Season of Seraph and its launch. I loved the look and feel of strand, and the look of Neomuna. The story while was "interesting" it did feel rushed as all hell and while i prefer Nimbus to Shaw Han, an equally disliked character, both are badly written for their parts in the overall story, but i did like the enthusiasm of Nimbus even if it was ehhhhh misplaced in quite a few of their scenes.
great video! i think your thoughts sum up how I feel about lightfall too, it wasn’t really worthy of that name; it was just a filler expansion that failed to tell a good story but her some good aspects to it. ironically I think every season we had was overall solid maybe minus defiance.
looking at it personally now I feel really indifferent to lightfall and feel like it really blundered and wasted a lot of good potential. But things like strand and Root of Nightmares (yes, I agree it’s too easy but I really enjoyed it including the day one experience, probably one of my more fond d2 memories).
i do really hope final shape can pull through, it’s definitely a make or break at this point and i really want them to conclude the story on a good note.

Imagine Nez if we couldn’t break him by standing on plates. Imagine having to rotate the arena during damage while he teleports and jumps about, what a miss.
The Lightfall we definitely feels like Bungie sacrificed something to flesh out and fix things behind the scenes to make the end of Destiny be the best.
I still have one question in What is the statue of the Veiled lady in the Deep Stone Crypt raid. I always thought that was “The Veil” being some title for the lady, or is she representing the darkness power of Clarity that Clovis used to make Exos

I am not saying its a bad thing, but like... In a way, after learning more how the seasonal stories worked. Both by watching some stuff about the past ones I didn't get to experience and seeing a few of them first hand, Defiant until now. Almost feel like Lightfall was a seasonal story that was expanded upon to make an expansion out of it.
Why do I feel like this is the case?

But is strand really, really fun, especially after all 3 classes got built upon a bit more with banner, specter and walk? Yes, 100%.
