I always thought of Hiei's power to be more like an extension of his aura, in the case of Fist of the Mortal Flame, and the fact that in order to summon the Darkness, he molds his energy into bait like a Transmuter would. I see his Darkness technique to be more of an emulation of the Dragon, especially given that by the end of the tournament, his aura is that of the Dragon. He doesn't actually create the Dragon from thin air, but calls it, and eventually adds its aura to his own. Think more of Zeno Zoldyck and his Dragon transmutations. Kuwabara is a strange case.
