      Hard to imagine the west country without semaphores and boxes ! They have always been there ! I remember summer holidays in Cornwall and Devon the 60s and 70s, going by car but using the local trains and branches often. My sisters and brothers went to the beach .IBut went to the nearest mainline station, on the branch train to spot all day long .I remember being in awe of signal arms that dropped down instead of going up! Perplexed in fact. . I asked my Father why but he knew nothing about railways ( RAF man most of his life .37 years ) , so I was none the wiser! I still remember the clanking of the signal levers in the boxes and the bells and the clanking of the signal arm dropping down even now ! Sometimes a friendly signalman would invite us up for a look . Just myself or some other spotters I had met on the station and made friends with .

      @Sam_Green____4114 that sounds like such a great memory, being in Devon most of my life I’ve not really seen much of the semaphores, rarely had the need to venture to Cornwall, usually went the opposite way, feel like I’ve missed out not having visited there more often nor paid enough attention to them on the times I did visit. Devon lost their semaphores much earlier than Cornwall, before I was born I think, the odd remnants remain though.

    Great video, great record. As somebody else said perhaps some dates at least on each clip as you go from new light signals to older semaphores and back. Mostly at Par but took me a few seconds to realise one shot was suddenly at Liskeard. Again , great video as all these records on the day suddenly become history so thank you so much for recording, editing and posting.

      Thank you, glad you enjoyed the video and it’s good to know what I was trying to portray has come across in this video, recording a few moments in time of historical change. My first time doing such a video and it never really occurred to me to add those details in, appreciate the constructive criticism and noted for future should I do another like this, thank you.

    Back a bit I was waiting on Totnes station and was amazed how the china clay freight trains whizzed through. Good to see actual locos. I’m further down the line & apart from specials just the sleeper train & fuel train for Longrock depot at Pz are loco hauled.
    I didn’t realize HST’s were still running, all I see are the green things!

    Cornwall used to be a great place to see proper trains, now as you said we still have three sets of castle class HSTs per day working, and the odd DB class 66 around the Par area.
    It’s also getting hard to see any class 150 these days, we are surrounded by them plastic green things which are crap to travel on which I don’t film.

    • @LamboJon
      @LamboJon  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I still quite like Cornwall for the trains, only place locally I can see HSTs in daylight frequently(for now) suppose the HSTs have replaced the 150s for time being, 150s still in regular use up here in Exeter area, the HSTs are too long for Topsham station so can’t be used on Exmouth branch.
      The Cornwall appeal is slowly diminishing though unfortunately.

    I don't understand why there 's not more freight to the West Country because of the distances involved for going all the way west with trucks carrying goods ! I just don't understand why they can't make it pay . Surely containers arriving at Felixstowe and travelling to Plymouth or further west would be batter off on the railway? They could have one train with a portion of containers for Plymouth then a second portion continuing west !! Then they pick up the empties on the way back ? But they cannot even make a container train to Bristol pay its way can they ? Unbelievable ! Has that stopped running now ,the container train that used to run to Bristol !

    • @LamboJon
      @LamboJon  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I don’t understand it either, seems so strange that there’s not more freight of any capacity, there’s been the odd bits and pieces but they’ve always been shortlived. Cornish roads are dire for traffic too, removing some trucks would help massively I’m sure, or certainly reducing the distance they have to travel at the very least.

    The saddest thing is all the signal's and signal box's are disappearing through what network raiil say is modernization, un fortunately not many signal box's left so what happens to alll the signal men who have did that job for many years ? Nice video you've managed to capture disappearing history in the near future all those signals and boxes will be gone, and they call it modernization. ,😢

    • @LamboJon
      @LamboJon  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s a shame the signal boxes are consigned to the history books but the modernisation has made the lines more efficient running if nothing else. Shame the signallers working there have been displaced though, hopefully the signal boxes will remain in place as landmarks for a few years more though.

      @@LamboJon at least par signal box will stay in place network rail have turned it into aa classroom for new employees, but the rest are on the hit list apart from one goonbarow doesn't seem to be on the hit list as for the modernization of signaling yet again at Westbury yesterday signal failure trains cancelled or delayed a few weeks ago just outside London a pigeon caused havoc on the overhead wires causing all line shutdown in fact their having more trouble with what we call progress that the old mechanical signals,

      Judging from the number of yachts stored on dry land with their masts up this part was a winter recording. Water colour likely to be from sediment/top soil washed off the land by heavy and persistent winter rain. The rain water run-ff into rivers in South Hams ( Devon) colours the water a dull red.

    • @clivephilpott3911
      @clivephilpott3911 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @tomcarr1358 what rubbish you spout. I cross the Tamar Bridge daily and report any sewage discharge to my local MP with photographic evidence.
      I crossed the bridge this morning and yet another discharge of raw sewage was in the river Tamar.
      Please find out the facts before telling porky pies. I assume that you work for the SWWA to make such remarks.

    Seams odd they are putting colour light signals in rather than go straight to etcs

    • @LamboJon
      @LamboJon  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Most of the older rolling stock isn’t compatible with ETCS, so doesn’t make sense to blanket fit that yet, especially as south west generally just gets cascade of newer old stock that’s being replaced elsewhere.

    Devon and Cornwall are very boring now since the GWR and CrossCountry HSTs are gone

    • @LamboJon
      @LamboJon  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The GWR HSTs are still around, just shortened and predominantly in Cornwall but I do agree it’s not great now there’s less and less HSTs about the place.
