Have you ever considered stopping dyeing your hair? I dyed regularly for 30+ years due to societal pressures, and so last June I made the decision at 61 to stop altogether. Best decision and most liberating thing I've ever done. My hair is now healthy again.

You really need developer to open the cuticle of white hair and deposit color. The Clairol product doesn't have a hope of covering white without that. Also since developer has a limited activation time the Revlon product makes much more sense than something mixed in the tube and losing its power every day. I say white hair because gray is just the cast that white and pigmented hairs give each other. If you look at those hairs, they are actually white.

I agree with you about Clairol. Try Loreal Root Rescue next. I use the applicator only to apply it, then I message it in with my fingertips, gloves on. Thanks for all you do to help us.

Revlon just sent these to me and I LOVE it. I honestly would have never even tried it. So glad because I really love it. It shockingly covered all my gray. Super fast and easy! The only thing I didn't like was the strong ammonia scent.

Hi...watched your video...I really needed my roots done...was so nervous about doing it myself...after your review I went to drugstore and purchased the Revlon Root Erase in Light Brown...I have dark roots with heavily highlighted hair...followed the directions...left on for additional five minutes...rinsed...WOW...it came out fantastic. This stuff really, really works. Thank you very much...desperate times call for desperate measures...Ha Ha!

I can confirm Angie's experience as mine was the same. I was so excited to try the Clairol product with the ease of the brush and no mixing. I even left it on for 15 minutes. Clairol, you need to rework your formula, it doesn't live up to it's promise. Thanks for another great video, Angie!

Awesome review--I'm happy to see Revlon develop this niche. It feels so wasteful to purchase a full box of color merely to retouch my roots, and I'm happy to see this can be used multiple times! Thank you for adding this timely research to your channel.

Haven't checked out the Clairol ingredients but the Revlon does have ammonia which may make it color better. Looking for semi-permanent color without peroxide catalyst or ammonia if one exists.

I'm so bummed about the Clairol one not covering gray.😢😭 I've been trying to figure out what to do since I'm allergic to permanent hair dye now. That one seemed like such a good solution because it doesn't contain PPD (the chemical most people are allergic to). At the moment I get highlights to try to hide the gray...they don't contain PPD but they also don't cover gray either. Back to the drawing board I guess, thanks for saving me the time and money of trying it! Great review!

    • @cish6047
      @cish6047 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Same here. Maybe hair-color products just work differently on different peoples' hair, as I would guess there are different variables such as diet, hair type and even water differences that could determine an outcome of these hair colors. I'm not sure about that, but it seems plausible. :c)

    • @susansauls8902
      @susansauls8902 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I believe it is because the Revlon was more permanent color than the Clairol product. That's why it had to be pumped into the cap and be mixed. The two different sides had to react, which made it a stronger and more permanent color. The Clairol product didn't have that, it was already prepared, so it was pretty much same as a color rinse or wash. It didn't have the chemical power behind it that the Revlon had. Created an extra step, sure, but that one extra step made all the difference in the results.

There is a Clairol root touch up that comes in a box- it works very well. I recently tried the gel formula and it was a huge disappointment. Well as the Revlon is a Permanent colour and the Clairol is a Semi, one would expect the Revlon to colour greys better. It depends how resistant your greys are. Mine take colour very well. My friend has very resistant greys that don’t. I suspect I would be fine with the Clairol. I also wouldn’t want to be permanently colouring my own hair in between salon visits. Only semi.

I use Revlon Colorsilk hair color. It's ammonia free, $2.84 at Walmart. I use it for all over color, and it's so cheap I just mix half the mixture at a time for root touch up. It's the best color I've personally used, even better than the ammonia based colors.

@@decorrater8548 I leave it on for 30 minutes, the same amount of time if I do a full color. I suggest if you try it, to buy a shade lighter than you think you need. It tends to run dark. And the conditioner that comes with it is amazing!

I, too, have tried both and the Revlon color is far superior.
Now that the salons are closed, due to Coronavirus, I had to touch-up the grays in a tiny bathroom (cover entire counter with plastic...old shower liner works well). It came out pretty good even though I really couldn't see the back that well. Hey, as long as it looks good on the surface until the salons reopen, I'm good.

I have been using the Revlon one for around 8 times now and I love it. I get 2 applications from one; but I do my whole head and my roots are mostly white. I color every 3 weeks and use the medium golden brown. The color does not fade on my fine hair and doesn't get dry or frizzy. I use a dab of a cream leave in conditioner after each shampoo. I use to use Clairol Perfect 10 which I also loved; but it is hard to find anymore.

Thanks for this video! I always have used the Clairol Root Touch-up that you mix and paint on. I’m going to buy the Revlon one based on your video. Not only did it work great for you, but the pump feature dispenses just the right amount. I would always have to guess the amount on the Clairol Root Touch-up, as I get 2-3 uses out of each box. My greys grow like yours, only on the top of my head, and a few at my temples. The medium brown looks perfect for you!

I used this Revlon one for the front half of my head. I like the brush, it feels very solid in my hand. I tried to not take too long, but it was the first time I did my hair by myself. My hair got kind of dry at the end of spreading, I think that's why the direction said to wet it again after going thru the sections. I essentially filled the cap half full, washed the brush in it and used a bit of that water to wet my hair again. It took me about 15 minutes total. The smell wasn't too bad (I have never used ammonia hair dye before this). I had left over hair conditioner from last Revlon hair dye (not this product) that I used after this dying, so my hair is very soft. My hair color match to the other color is excellent.

Wow what a difference! I am so surprised the Clairol was basically a waste! It didn't seem to have done anything! I will definitely buy the Revlon, that IS my hair color except for the white just framing my face. It's a "look" I'd rather not have. What I really want to find is a way to make my hair shiny again, I wonder if there is a gloss you can put on? Anyways, you find the best of everything :) Thanks Angie, hope you have fun with your daughter!

That doesn't surprise me - I've been using the Revlon Colorsilk for close to 2 decades and it simply can't be beat. Did I try other brands? Sure, but nothing out-performed the Revlon. Add to that the fact that Walmart has it for only $2.97....hands-down winner. (They used to make a root touch-up that came in a sort of 'bingo marker' applicator and it worked SO well. Then it was taken off the market for some unknown reason!) Turns out it cost more than the $2.97 box of regular hair color so I just use that every 3 weeks. No complaints here!!

Oh nooo, I wish I had waited for this. I bought a Clairol root touch up kit yesterday. Granted the one I bought works more like the Revlon one there and isn't the GEL you're using... so let's hope it works better. Eeek!

Thanks Angie, I have been looking for a temporary root cover product. You made this so much easier for me. You’re the best!

I have used Root Touchup by Clairol which is a permanent color you have to mix and had very good results. I am primarily have white roots now. I had seen the one you tried and wanted to try it too, for those times before I do my roots. Think I will just stick to Root touchup now, or else, try the Revlon one.

Not on topic at all but I know you like mineral sunscreen. If you haven’t already, you should try Innisfree blueberry watery sun cream! It’s very lightweight in texture, blends in instantly, and leaves no white cast!

Wow!! The Clairol did nothing. I would use the Revlon hair color. Thanks, Angie!! ❤

So happy to see Revlon do it right. Mixing is necessary for the chemical reaction to be “fresh” and therefore able to color correctly and penetrate the hair. The match is fantastic. Marketing needs to rethink the outer package graphics however. More than lack luster 🥺. Got to up those visuals to draw in the consumer or they will never know how fantastic the product is. Thank you for this fun experiment 👍😄. Hugs from Az

I have used Revlon for years...that is the one that works. My hair stylist gets mad when I use box color!

You can take any decent permanent color and apply to roots only with left over for another time. My guess is this is more expensive per ounce.

Wendy Fried but would it be done in 10 min?

LAS let’s see her results because truthfully I’ve never felt grays were covered in less than 45 minutes.

I've been using 10 minute permanent color for years, starting with one that Revlon use to make, then replaced that with Clairol Perfect 10 which was also very good. That became hard to get, so I was using one one from Sally's; which did not have many shades. I was happy to see that Revlon came up with a new one. I can get 2 full head root touch up out of 1 bottle. It is much easier to mix equal amounts and it doesn't run. The color is great and it lasts and doesn't damage my hair. My hair roots are 90% white.

I just used Revlon and will be interested in how long it lasts. Frustration with Loreal and others has not only been greys not being covered but how easily they come back. I don't wash my hair daily and sometimes in 3 wks I see greys, never a month. Fingers crossed!

I have used the Revlon one twice now and LOVE it. It says up o 3 uses however, I just want little touchups on the little hairs above my ears. I love that I can just paint on a little bit, wait 10 min, take a shower and off I go. I will def get way more than 3 uses from this. I just put the brush and cup in the shower with to wash them out. I love it!

Angie, thank you so much for the review! 💖I've been using the REVLON Root Erase since I watched your review 3 years ago. It worked so very well until they discontinued it. 😭 Can you please advise if you found something comparable to it since it's not sold anymore? I'd be so thankful!! 🙏💐🌟

Yes, I see that now. Kind of wish I had seen it the day I got these but I was so excited about "no mixing" etc. I'm learning that I didn't really compare apples to apples here but at least we learned that this Clairol product doesn't really work on gray coverage.

I love that the revlon gives you multiple uses. I will sometimes use a regular box of color and only use half but that’s a pain to try to measure out correctly.

I love Revlon color silk. I've been using it 25 years. I love the no ammonia and color results. I've tried different brands. I tried Clairol for awhile and I didn't think it lived up to Revlon. I no you were doing root touch-ups, but I'm not surprised Revlon did a better job.
