Great Britain is such a quaint island in general. You could be down south by Lands End or up Jorth by John O' Groats and you'll find the same small villages, rueal roads, ancient castles and homes littered across the countryside. I reckon this may be a huge reaosn for conservatism in rural areas. A lot of the outright SNP or Labour areas here are well built up and secluded from the traditional countryside. Funnily some of Scotlands most reliable Conservative voting constituencies are those near the border that lack big cities and oush for things like the reopening of the borders railway and preservation of the old textile buildings from centuries gone by. Thanks for the recommendation. I was born in Rhodesia in 1966. We declared independence unilaterally in 1965, or so I'm told. But then there was the Lancaster House agreement which meant that bit of history was no more. But my dad got a medal for his part!😂❤
We can dream, this is what this song is about, pride in all of us, what we can be, and who we are. Respect to our Forfathers who made this land beautiful and home.
I live in the US, and this is the first time I’ve ever heard of this song. Wikipedia says that this song is played before cricket matches, and that there’s a notable amount of people that believe this should be England’s national anthem. Very nice to finally be introduced to this piece 👍
Yes I'm an Englishman and this song is sung at the cricket test matches, especially against Australia in the Ashe's test. Very moving even for the Australians
Thank you so much true Brits hear this which is the unofficial patron anthem of England, with goosebumps and a tear in the eye ,in a good way, so welcome to England, true Brit. In the USA 🙏💕👏
"Jerusalem" is often played as a recessional hymn at English church services, & it's also play at sporting events if England rather than the United Kingdom as a whole is competing. You also may have heard it as part of the soundtrack of the movie "Chariots of Fire".
Even though I'm American, this still brings me to tears every time I hear it. I also hear this along with the other British anthems during st. George's day. Because unlike most Americans I do not forget where I come from. A good and dark times, England will always be the one that stands when other nations fall.🇬🇧💜
As a Zimbabwean of British stock, there is no better fitting song to be England's national anthem. Amazing country. Sending kind thoughts, best wishes and love to my kith and kin in the UK. 🇿🇼🤝🏻🇬🇧🇿🇼🍻🇬🇧
I am not from the UK, but an Italian-American by proud ancestry and nationality. It has nonetheless long been clear to me that the self-sacrificing Christ-Inspired fight for human dignity and civility for the world as a whole has heroically cut its way through England and the British Isles over many centuries as through no other land on earth, drawing both awe to and derision upon its inhabitants and those affected by them as to Christ himself, Who had clearly set the Ultimate stage upon the Cross and off again for all people everywhere, sending Jerusalem straight to the UK and beyond. The first time I heard this song it produced an intensity of feeling in me of naturally appropriated familiarity that brought tears of joy to my eyes by its conviction to the most noble cause of The Savior, as it has ever since in my repeated hearings of this profound hymn.
Funny becaause the Italian National Anthem gets me teary eyed and I have no idea why. No connection to Italy at all apart from I love Italian food and beer! It's just such a great National Anthem. I love the bit about Italy called, we are ready to die!
I lived in England for two years, I heard and sang this gem by William Blake in the packed Westminster Abby. Even today I feel my heart clapping with emotion.❤
i would vote remain, but just to piss off the Tories i'll vote for independence,i still love my English brothers and sisters,we are the fckin same lunatics, all of us. hahahaha
With I vow to thee my country, which is not, necessarily, the nationalistic song as many people think, but is a prayer to seve a higher purpose,,above our human ego and to serve the word and the WAYS of the Kingdom of God. The words ' lays upon the Altar the bravest and the best ' gets to Mr, everytime I hear it.
I was at Saint Paul's Anglican Church in Edmonton in 1981 when we sang it. It was not for Remembrance Day. In 2018 the Anglican Church of Canada admitted that based on current trends it will cease to exist by 2040. Today Nigeria has more Anglicans than England and the USA combined. I am 69 and have to say that the world is changing too fast for me.
Thank you so much for including the anthem. I was stationed in England for nearly 7 years and fell in love with all of Great Britan. I miss it so much. The day I landed there it was as if I knew what lay around every corner. So green, so authentic.

I am Hispanic (also, I was an English major), but William Blake is one of my favorite Romantic poets, and this anthem (poem, really) stirs something powerful in me. The closest I've come to describing it is as awe. Blake was a creative genius, a true mastermind, and this is literature at its finest. I'd go so far as to say it was divinely inspired.
I’m Spanish but I’ve lived in London all my life and this brought a tear to my eye, as I remembered the days in which I sang this song along with the school.
As a Norwegian I have always admired the UK. It invented almost everything and have liberated us from tyranny. I love British crime and comedy and fantasy and such amazing music.
I agree although it will be a bit funny. "And now, the British national anthem, Jerusalem!" It be as funny if Spain called their anthem Hull. Still I think it would best reflect English humour and global understanding as well as bloody fine taste in music!
It was sung at my Grandfather's funeral, and I was the one bursting into tears when we got to "Bring me my bow of burning gold". A proper gentle Yorkshireman, I can still hear his "'Ello, my lad!" to this day, I miss him still.
Yeah I want this at my funeral and there's going to be a lot of jaw dropping wide eyed people when it's played. All the attendees will all think it's going to be a modern song..
I'm American, 56, and saw this sung in the movie Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner and it really stuck with me. I wrote the lyrics and sang it in my head for days and then found this video. Good ole Billy Blake really knew how to write. It really reaches in and grabs the heart.
I'm a Scot an ex member of HM forces and a supporter of Scotlands independence. But we all deserve an anthem of our own and England deserves this an awesome tune.
What a great performance from both Choir and Orchestra. I sang this after the secondWW2 was completed in the newly formed Australian boys choir. 68 years ago. I hope to have it played at my funeral.
I was once asked the question "what country do you consider home?" I thought long and hard. I think the truth is the country I would call home is the country I eventually wish to be laid to rest in, and that has to be England. As much as sometimes this country (well the politicians) infuriates me, this is my land. The land of my forefathers, and I will forever be grateful to call this green peaceful land home. Thank you.
I'm a big burly bloke but this song makes me weep. I cannot tell you the pride that feels like it is going to burst out from my heart whenI think of our little country and what it has achieved down the centuries.
+ian harvey I'm an American from the U.S. but when I hear this stunning and majestic piece of music it chokes me up the point of getting all teary-eyed also. England may be small in land area but it is a huge country in so many other ways. There will always be an England-always.
+PCplays99 That is one of the nicest things I've ever read on you tube, The Star Spangled Banner and God Bless America are on my favourites for what that may be worth to you. All the best from the uk
LOL, that's news to the Irish and Scots and all the others they fought like hell to keep from leaving their empire, even when they requested to do so peacefully like the Americans with their well-intenioned, but naive "Olive Branch Petition." What galls me is to see the Irish in Ulster decide to stay in the EU alongside their fellow Gaels in Dublin. Why trade one empire for another?
+Steven Barrett Scotland entered into Union voluntarily, grew very rich, and Glasgow became the second city of the British Empire. The Irish were treated badly, by both English and Scots. America has treated minorities it conquered very badly too, and still has problems today.
Isadora, thank you for your reply. BTW, it doesn't look like we'll ever ditch the habit of treating our minorities like dirt. Just catch some of the hot air, bile and bloviations emanating from the GOP convention to see what I mean. Admittedly, I'm biased as a Democrat. But I used to be an active Republican until one day when I saw how the real up n' comers saw what they would later publicly come out and snidely put down as the "little people." Disgusting. Maggie Thatcher, if she was alive now, would not recognize what's become of both my country and our (deservedly minority-by-numbers) party. It deserves to be swept out of office or at least this time given a through-cleansing of its worse members and tendencies. If you think Trump's out of bounds, take a look at one of our most notorious pro-WASP Congressmen, Steve King of Iowa. He's never met a pro-Kiplingesque bit o' nonsense enter his thick head that he couldn't say enough kind words for it. I l love my country dearly, but expressing that love sometimes means I've got to do so in a public forum like this so more people can see what's what become of my nation's two party system and good decent civic-minded politics. The GOP has tons of Bible totin' quotin' bangin' "christians" all ready to tell you Obama's even worse than a "radical Islamicist pro terrorst-loving Manchurian candidate president" . . . but not one of the loudest Pharisees interviewed recently in Cleveland, esp. by MSNBC's desk hosts can adequately point to any reliable Biblical scripture verse or section in our two thousand year Tradition, save for "Deus Vult Est" the blood curdling cry to round up Crusaders centuries ago. Even more puzzling is the "comparison" of the average Trump voter to the average pro-Brexit voter by American reporters and pundits. Two different kinds of campaigns for two decidedly different kinds of results sought. Amazing. Pray God gets through enough thickened skulls and hearts of some of our most bewilderingly hardened fellow citizens and subjects. People have to listen, though, using all God has given us to make the best with in order to achieve the most humane results for all.
When I hear this song it really does give me goose bumps I imagine standing there chest out over looking lush green fields and church steeples and the crack of a cricket ball being hit off a willow bat then the roar of Merlin engines roaring in the air as a squadron of spitfires flies over rolling there wings oh I love to be Englishman !

@@EjvindGEMDark " ...among those _dark, Satanic mills._ " Gee, I wonder what that might be referring to? Everyone in the comments is loving this hymn for the wrong reasons.
This brings tears to my eyes, as does Shakespeare's: This royal throne of kings, this sceptred isle, This earth of majesty, this seat of Mars, This other Eden, demi-paradise, This fortress built by Nature for her self Against infection and the hand of war, This happy breed of men, this little world, This precious stone set in a silver sea Which serves it in the office of a wall Or as a moat defensive to a house, Against the envy of less happier lands, This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England …
I love all these comments from people from Ireland and scotland and wales that for once aren't hating on England. This is what we love to see and it's all pulled together by this 1 hymn
I'm english and I don't think they really hate us. It's just banter and when it really matters we all come together. I love my Scottish, Welsh and Irish neighbours ❤
I love this hymn. I'm an American now living in Canada who was privileged to live in England for three years. Thoughts with England and Manchester today.
What I so admire about this piece is that it has a striving element. "I will not cease from mental strife, not let my sword sleep in my hand, till we have built Jerusalem ..."; rather than merely celebrating British glory
I think that the reason this is so great isn't just the music - it's the words. It's talking about how great England is, but also about how we need to keep building and bettering so that it becomes the New Jerusalem (Heaven) on earth. Not about conquest or fame or power, but making life better for everyone. And that's not only hopeful, that's inspiring and a great thing for England (and everywhere) to strive for.
Exactly. It’s the most healthy kind of patriotism there is. It’s optimistic, but not complacent. It’s about always striving for better, not resting on your laurels.

During lockdown, I believe many of us have appreciated the beauties and landmarks of England much more than before. It is a beautiful, old, sweet, little country.
I first heard this hymn when I went to see Chariots of Fire at the theatre during my youth. I can listen to this over and over again and it still stirs my soul and I do not have a drop of English blood.

To make it the national anthem they would have to change the lyrics to make it non-England specific, as the UK is made up of countries other than England.

We might have our differences and like to rip on each other but when it comes down to it we all live on the same island. I would defend Scotland like it was England because this island is our home whether you're English, Scottish or Welsh, we're all one people. I even see the Irish as part of our family 1) because i have Irish family members and 2) because they're part of our little group of islands, same with the smaller islands like the Isle of man. Funnily enough i actually find the Scottish accent attractive on a women. I probably have one of the worst English accents ....... Manc, its not as bad as Scouse though lol.
Many don’t understand the true meaning of this hymn. It’s much deeper than people realise. It’s all about the struggle to defeat the feudalistic, monarchical system and the building of a new Jerusalem. Fantastic hymn. It could well end up being England’s anthem
Although I am a Dutchman, I truly love this hymn. First of all because of my love for the UK, that liberated my parents’ home country in 1945. And because of all the cultural riches that made me love Great Britain, also thanks to my wonderful teachers (who taught my to read Blake, Wordsworth, Thomas, Auden, Elliot, and so many other writers).Even if you left the EU, you will remain forever in my heart.

Nicely said, my Friend !

The English don't always do patriotism, but when they do, by God, do they do it well!
True
Scotland actually basically created the Union
