    I recently discovered your band somewhat by accident while browsing around TH-cam. The Dixieland Crackerjacks have become one of my all time favorites. No matter how bad a day I may have had, your music always makes me smile (no pun intended.) This piece and "Five Foot Two" are the best so far. Many thanks for your fabulous renditions of this timeless music and best regards.

    You guys are great! I live way down South in Dixie and I've heard dixieland from New Orleans to Birmingham to Pensacola and your sound is as good as any. Love it.

    This is great music! Thanks to all the band.
    The two people who walked past the camera as the band played had no idea what they were missing!
    There's a really good blog about Louis Armstrong's versions of this tune on the excellent "dippermouth dot blogspot".

    Now that's happy music! Can't keep from smiling when I hear these extremely talented musicians play this tune. My only question is: How does that bass sax player get enough air thru that huge horn?

    • @ABrandsma
      @ABrandsma  9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      jeff Craven The answer to that question lies in finding the right kind of mouthpiece. Many modern pieces are designed to make a lot of penetrating or loud noice. But disadvantage is you loose your air very fast. If you chooce a more moderate, vintage design, you can play longer lines.

      @@ABrandsma A belated thanks to the answer to my question about getting enough air to play something like a bass sax. I bought a 80 year old tenor sax, had it restored to learn to play; as a trombone player I thought my lungs were dying on that sax. I'll go to the local instrument dealer and see if they can fix me up. Any suggestions for a good student model mouthpiece?

    • @ABrandsma
      @ABrandsma  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you just start playing, my advice is to start with a fairly classical mouthpiece with a moderate tip opening. If you get out of air quickly, the problem might just be a too wide opening, or an embouchure that is too loose. Usually a Selmer C* (Just one star) is a good advice. Another thought might be that a vintage saxophone fits better with a vintage mouthpiece. In that case, very good pieces once were made by Arnold Brilhart. First a player with the California Ramblers, when he also worked with my hero: Adrian Rollini. Also older Selmer mouthpieces with a round shaped chamer, instead of the quadrangle shape that modern pieces have, usually fit better with older pieces.

    Hopefully you can come and play in Edmonton, Canada in the future.
    We have plenty of venues for you to display your artistry in.
    Especially the Edmonton Folk Fest in August.
    You'd like it here, close to our Pristine Rockie Mountains
