Yes it's still weird to say as a 40+ years watcher of the NFL that the lions build their team the right way and other teams need to build it like them... specially the panthers...
I agree--Detroit worked with the trenches first and worked out. This is primarily why Detroit under GM Holmes and HC Campbell are so good. If you can consistently run the ball and stop the run, you will be is and win a lot of games.
@@thetruth1816 true but easier said than done.... say a quarter of those guys are busts and another quarter are injury prone.... we arent having this conversation. Its not a exact science for sure 😅...
The 2023 lions draft was ridiculous in how perfect it was. Each of those four players has been key to their success and have all been absolutely killing it out there. Literally game one they were proving themselves!
I remember thinking "what the fuck are we doing" after the first 3 picks they made, and boy, am I ever happy to be proven wrong. Brad Holmes is a boss!
Is this the time where deshaun watson is greatly hated since he didnt only ruin the team during the time he was on the team, but after he left the team (giving up the 1st pick) by winning that game?
Thing is, it feels like the offense is pretty set. Maybe you go and grab another receiver or two and possibly a backup tight end to Sanders. But that's it. O-line is solid and was one of the best when healthy. It's definitely the defense that needs to be hard focused on next year.
Really solid analysis, this draft analysis is not usually done during the season, but it should be. Teams that are flagging often have failed in the draft.
The Lions redefined what a rebuild is The games against the titans and the Texans tells you all you need to know about the Lions They can win by 50 with their quarterback only passing for 80 yards and they can win against a playoff contender with their quarterback throwing five interceptions That’s scary
It the culture of grit that was layed out in year 1. The 2021 Lions team was not talented but they had some gritty players that played their ass off. They gave it all and to me were considered the best bad team I have ever seen. Then in 2022 they added some talent but again it was mostly grit for that year as well. Thats how they were able to go from 1-6 to 9-8 and knocking the Packers out of the playoffs. 2023 was finally the year when their talent finally matched their grit and that resulted in the first NFC North title and whiskers away from making the Super Bowl. And 2024 we continue just keep grinding and improving. The talent is there but now are grit so well established that this team seems like it can go the distance. This culture of grit that s what we will get us to the Super Bowl.
My concerns about the Lions draft were immediately removed with this thoughts experiment: "Ignore the order. If, before the draft, I told you these are the players who the Lions drafted in the 2023 draft, how would you feel?" It helped me understand that I was being too stuck on concerns about positions and order and not actually focusing on WHO they got. From there, it was easy to give that draft an A to A- (if you have complaints that they got little value later on)
Who do you think is the biggest threat in the NFC to Detroit as of now? I might be biased but I'll say us(Philly). We have been the best defense in the league since week 5, Jalen Hurts is a real MVP candidate and Saquon is also an MVP candidate.
Love your show, and loved it more when you became more than a disembodied voice over!!💯😂🎙❤️👍🏾 Staying with your assessment of the 🦁's draft, Only the WR Antoine Greene is no longer with the team. OL Colby Soresdal, QB Hooker, & DL Broderic Martin are valuable reserves. So in 1 draft they get 4 starters (1st or 2nd year All -Pro or Pro Bowlers in Gibbs, LaPorta & Branch), your MLB for the next decade in Campbell, a former Heisman candidate as your backup QB in Hooker along with depth pieces mentioned.
That's 4 starters & 3 depth pieces (7 roster spots!!) In one draft. Same in prior and successive drafts to 23-the Lions have one of the top 3 scouting departments in the NFL, beginning with Brad Holmes. He remade the 🦁s 2ndary in one off season. He was responsible for scouting and then acquiring Carleton Davis 3rd & Amik Robertson @ CB, drafting Kerby & Branch (now the top safety duo in the NFL), and Arnold & Rakestraw in the 24 draft. Recall that Holmes began his scouting career with the Rams as DB scout, and u get these results. I have loved what the Rams did as well in back to back drafts with their defensive interior, doubling up in both drafts to overwhelm a self-scouted area of concern due to the retirement of Aaron Donald. If I draw any similarities to Snead on the Rams & his pupil Holmes, it is that beyond a "F' them Picks" mentality, Holmes instead learned the value of scouting the late rounds (Nakua & Rodrigo respectively) and doubling down early. Holmes did a similar thing drafting Alim McNeil AFTER he grabbed Levi Onzwuzerike as DLs in the 2nd & 3rd(?) rds. Same with the versatile Steve Avila- he was on the Lions radar last year. So building thru the draft requires drafting talent beyond the 1st 2 days, and look how many teams botch that!!🤔🤣. I enjoy your work in general, but specifically this effort draws much praise. You can look at a team's success by looking at their draft hit rate. Its why KC took Karlaftis, and Leo Chanal and...🤣🎙❤️💯👍🏾👍🏾❤ #313GRIT🦁
I was crushed when the Seahawks drafted Devon Witherspoon just before the Lions picked at #6. I thought he would have been a perfect fit (I still do) for the Lions, both culturally and schematically. But missing him and the trade back with the Cardinals allowed the Lions to draft Sam LaPorta along with the other three. Sometimes things work out for the best……although at the time many Lions fans were strongly questioning Brad Holmes’ sanity. Not any more.
We likely wouldn’t have drafted branch since we got pick 45 with that trade back I believe so we would’ve gotten LaPorta but no branch without a separate trade up.
Far from the best, and certainly not a bad draft, while also not really hitting any Day 3 picks, I would just like to bring up my Seahawks draft. Starting with the first round, many people suspected the Seahawks should go for DL, getting either Bresee or Carter at #5 overall and instead we got CB Devon Witherspoon who is not a big numbers guy with Ints, but he's capable of keeping explosive plays down to a minimum. He's taken a step back this year, having recorded no sacks along with his no interceptions this season but he does not give up a lot, having only allowed 1 TD on 46 times targeted. The bigger pick from last year's draft for this year, is obviously Jaxon Smith-Njigba. The first of four straight receivers and as the #3 guy, his first season was not really going to matter as he was just developing. No one saw him as a bust, especially compared to Johnston, but no one was talking about him either, unlike Flowers or Addison. This year he's taken a massive step-up and looks like he could be a 1k yard receiver during this rookie contract alongside DK, just as DK and Tyler had 1k yard seasons each in 2022. JSN has stepped up in a big way this year, thanks to Ryan Grubb. We move on to the second round where we have another player who has upped his productivity in year two thanks to a coaching change. Mike MacDonald clearly likes Derrick Hall as he has started 7 out of 9 games and his snap increase has led to him being used in more blitzes and having 5 sacks+17 pressures on the year. Plus he got the fumble returned for a TD against Atlanta, he's been a numbers guy, and while he isn't a top end OLB, he's been productive and could easily see higher growth with MacDonald. Also in the second round is Zach Charbonnet, who... Let's face it, Walker and Charbonnet are not Montgomery and Gibbs, we did not build the same system as them and Charbonnet is definitely an inconsistent runner. This is the first moment where I scroll down slightly and think we could have had Achane with that pick instead which... whew imagine Walker and Achane. Now we get to the late rounds which are year, dart board throws and when a miss happens in these rounds then it can be whatever... so long as that miss isn't a starter, and we have our starting RG in Anthony Bradford as our 4th round pick who has been... an embarrassment. He is outright awful in run blocking (which could be a huge reason for my thoughts of Charbonnet) and he mostly just feels like someone we have at the spot so Haynes doesn't play every snap so he can develop into an NFL role. I hope Haynes can be the full starter next year and be capable there. Everyone else is not very notable, we have guys who mostly take Special Teams snaps and some depth pieces, and so no "diamond in the rough" type players. Even the likes of Olu Oluwatimi who we had hoped could fight for a starting position last year at Center, and now he's 3rd string behind a rookie who is behind a guy who snapped the ball over Geno's head twice in our past two games.
Vikings should be mentioned as well since KAM has whiffed on all his picks so far in the draft (excluding JJ who's hurt and Turner I guess since he is "young"). Luckily, he's riding the cottail of Spielman's roster so the Vikings are still one of the better teams. But KAM better hope he hit on his QB and Turner becomes a decent starter or else he should be out.
Me personally I never like Bryce Young although I have never like Alabama qb’s in general so that might be why. My qbs were stroud, levis, Richardson, and young. I just never got those vibes from young that suggested he was a top qb prospect
@@michaelwicklund Although I understand why they think that, I've never bought into the well QB prospect is from X school so he'll suck stuff. People said that about Oregon QBs until Herbert, they said it about OSU QBs until Stroud, and they were even saying it about NC QBs for Drake Maye. It never ages well, and only can continue because a school only produces a legit 1st round talent every several years, a majority of which will fail in the NFL.
@@harrisontull8377 to me it is a prove you can produce those kind of players who succeed in the nfl first before I bite. Many Alabama qbs have failed so to me they have to prove they can produce qb talent that works in the nfl before I will consider drafting one from that school. I know by that method I will think low on some guys who will be great.
@ I also in certain positions seem to be better and guessing if they will have success more so than others mostly due to some of the key traits. It’s never 100% but there are some players I just feel as if they will be big steals and I hit a lot or I think low on some players and they turn out to not succeed.
as a panthers fan who still hopes bryce young can succeed, that trade was a stupid ass move at the time and that hasn't changed. he needs weapons to succeed and we took away his top weapon & our ability to add other weapons in the near future with that trade. no rookie qb succeeds with the team he had around him. sell the team tepper
I still don't understand how so many could see Bryce Young over Stroud. I'm not some college football guru, imo it was easy to see Stroud as the top QB. I think people just got blinded by the hype around Young. Stroud was the textbook example of what to look for in a top college QB prospect, he had almost no red flags and was good to great in every single category, especially playing well when pressured, his biggest negatives were scoring low on that stupid IQ test (toss this in the trash) and playing on a talented team. On the other hand Young was good in accuracy, touch, processing speed, could read defenses and had good leadership and that's it. While having a metric ton of red flags, the biggest of which was playing poorly under pressure, but also barely meeting the minimum in arm strength (and I don't put much value on arm strength but even I was alarmed) and he wasn't just short, he was skinny and not athletic (unlike Kyler Murray or Russell Wilson).
Stroud can be a good QB. But I totally disagree about being under pressure. Michigan pressured him and he was mediocre. Same thing is happening under pressure this year. When he has time to throw, he is excellent.
