  • @Maochan81

    For anyone thinking about the two here are my comments. I had them both for some time, went with the MPC (personal preference). Digitakt is a drum machine, sampler and a great sequencer. It sounds really great, the workflow is very easy and intuitive. The LFO is really strong, lots of destinations and can work really fast. Parameter locks are really addictive and sequencing external gear is a strength of the takt. It's not a something i would use standalone. You can loop SCWF's, but can't compare it to a real synth, a cheap synth will do a better job. No song mode, no insert fx, just send to global reverb and detail. MPC Live is a mobile production studio. At first it's very simple to get a track going as well, but it can go really deep. It's almost limitless. Lot's of storage, sd card slot, hard drive slot, great internal synths, battery operation, lots of insert FX (4x per track). Real song mode, wifi, bluetooth. You can emulate randomness or parameter locks, not 1:1 like elektron but does the trick. Also don't compare 8 tracks on the takt vs 8 tracks on the MPC. You can have 16 pads playing different thing on one track and you can sequence all pads separately. Both are awesome imho.

    I have not used the Live much, but the Digitack with external gear is a dream. You can take a one bar loop with bunch of conditional triggs and parameter locks, and it will sound like a 16 bar loop. You can just jam on that and just keep transforming the whole thing for damn near endless jamming. If you want to turn your jam into a more composed track, just hook it up to you DAW and it's done. It's one of the most inspiring instruments I own. Great review by the way! 😀

    Different knobs on the Digitakt over the other electron machines. The "knobs" or encoders are now extremely high-resolution. This is a great improvement because you can really drill down when editing a sample or fine tuning a parameter or setting. All the Electron MKII devices coming this fall now have the high-res encoders. NICE.

    Brilliant stuff! I got a 0 coast and a Behringer Neutron, and I’m going to get myself a digitakt soon.. Would you know how I could link both my 0 coast and neutron to separate midi channels on the digitakt? I’m only aware of daisy chaining midi at the moment and have a slight understanding that it can be used in other useful ways.
    I have a beatstep pro controlling both at the moment but want to eliminate the beatstep pro and have the digitakt to be the main controller for both synths.
    All the best

    After all MPC originally stood for MIDI Production Center. Our expectations of what a "Production Center" has changed a lot since 1988, whereas the limitations ofthe Digitakt is in some ways more like the early MPCs. Actually the MPC3000, which came out in 1994 had 32 note polyphony! The Digitakt only has 8, but you can change the sample per step, but I find this a bit fiddly to use.

    The digitakt is more instant fun. Mpc live is more for if you like taking a look under the hood, very customizable, lots of possibilities for full songs. Now has AIR effects and three vst synths. And still pretty fun to program and record on! Much more capable sampler too. My MPC Live is very well-built, sorry you got a shoddy one, Jade! I have both and like both. I use the MPC to sketch out full songs and the digitakt solely for beats.

  • @RaveyStabs
    @RaveyStabs 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I would say the MPC will always be a good sample masher via chopping to pads and thats where the creative process for most is. But outside that there is not much scope for mashing via retriggering or more random manipulations like you can pull off with other sequencers such as the elektron as you say (but different ways for different strays!). I have a Korg SQ1 sequencer CV'd to other gear and can really appreciate that sort of randomness, but also appreciate the randomness you get from sample chopping and tapping out random pads until it sounds good. Both lead to happy accidents :)
    I'm not sure how the hip hop community feel or will take to the MPC Live, but Akais middleground with a DAW seems good to me (start on the live, finish/refine in the DAW, which many do). DAWs for me are a blank canvas (as you say) with too many options, and screen staring at blocks kills something and it becomes music by numbers and easy to get hung up on endless tweaking. I think many worry about this but I would say the MPC Live keeps its focus here.

    MPC and Digitakt are the two different philosophies. MPC has more functionality and can be a center of your kinda DAWless setup, while Digitakt is a very good part of this setup. If you pair them together and add midi keyboard you'll get complete DAWless production studio.

    Nice video, good information! I personally own some Elektron gear Rytm/Octatrack/analog four/ heat some of the sturdiest stuff if not THE sturdiest stuff in the studio, the analog rytm is my go to lonely island machine at the moment as it covers soo much. I own this stuff sine its out and im still learning from it and it's functionality. The swedish really know how to get some A+++ quality going. Thinking about the price it's a lot of money, but you get insane amounts of creative stuff and sounds out of it!! One of my first synths was the Minibrute which is great to start synthing as every parameter is tweakable by knobs+faders (no menu diving).... then came the octatrack which quadruples possibilities... it was like giving the minibrute steroids and the octatrack is a piece of gear which fusions with other stuff so good. It feels like the octatrack is the best toy when you want all your gear to benefit (as it got ins/outs/fx/sequencer/sampling) . The heat by the way is a beast when hooked up to other synths... I mostly saturate stuff and it gives signals a warmth and punch and fullness. Hope I could help some people.

  • @garyusinger

    I just ordered both. I look forward to learning how to use them together. If that seems like it doesn't work out, I will return one of them. I am looking forward to having pads so probably keep the MPC. I do have a Push 2 that I use with Ableton. Would be interesting to see how that will work with the MPC and the Digitakt. Yeah. Probably got too many toys. But keep thinking that I can get them all to work together in a creative way. One of the main reason that I got the MPC and the Digitakt is that I am afraid that my Mac might take a dump mid performance, and having a machine that doesn't depend on a computer is important.
    Let me know if you have any advice or suggestions. Thanks in advance.

      @@johncaccioppo1142 Actually I returned the Digitakt. It is a great instrument, but I didn't need both, and I feel like the MPC Live although it takes a little more work to load up sounds, is more flexible, and can do a variety of different things. It is a steep learning curve, but worth it.

    Can't wait to watch this video.
    I find the MPC live takes up too much time while brainstorming.
    I am still in love with the sp303 from the early 2000's, due to the simplicity and functionality that was readily available at the top of the device.
    I currently own the Toraiz and the Live. Because I was hoping to find that fresh 303 feeling. But I usually chop and layer sounds together from my phone with Audio Evolution.
    Trying to find which device would be more closely related to the sp303, ie. digitakt, mpc live, circuit, op 1, octatrack.
    I kinda like the toraiz, but always looking for input.

    this is the debate im going through right now. i honestly dont know what do buy.
    i've already got ableton push2 and love using that but like most i want to get away from the computer and just jam out. the MPC live appeals to me because its a MPC and you cant go wrong for sample based music. but since i have push2 somthing very different cant always be wrong and having somthing different might give more inspiration. portability is a component i look for, but a laptop pack can power the electron so no drama there.
    current workflow is recording guitars and bass guitar and basing tracks around those samples, so MPC on first glance looks the choice. but the jaming aspect of digitakt looks fantastic
    anyone have any recommendations ?

    Can you use the MPC Live as a multi-track? In the past, I had a Boss BR-8, that I was very productive with. It was cool except that it stored everything to a ZIP disk drive which are absolutely obsolete. It had midi ports which allowed me to sync my drum machines to it. Fast forward almost 15 years. I use Ableton Live but i decided i wanted a more linear multi-track recorder thinking maybe this would inspire more productivity. However, modern multi-track don't have have midi ports. I was thinking this might be the workflow i need. plus a a bad ass sampler to sample my modular gear into instruments. Would this be a correct assessment?

      hi thanks for your reply. I really looked into the electron product lines last night, and I am a bit confused about which would be best suited for me? I live in Ontario Canada so we seem to get gear almost 6 months to a year different than the usa or Europe, which is a bit odd. anyways I am trying to figure out the pros and cons between, brands, design and cost, which is also considerably different than usa or Europe. I am from the days of 4 track tape recorders and find the whole digital format really confusing. I am used to doing everything manually, which is more fun than moving my mouse back and forth. I was after the mpc live but your video has raised a lot of important issues, that I really have to think about. Hi! I was very convinced to acquire the MPC Live but lately I have read many comments of problems with crushes and bugs, and I started to worry and I do not know if it will be good to buy or not MPC Live. What do you think about it? Although I understand that it is just coming to market and have to update the OS and fix the corresponding bugs, will it be good to acquire it at this time? Have you had any problems with him? If you had to choose between Octatrack and MPC Live, what would you choose and why? I like the Digitakt but I think it does not have song mode and for me it is fundamental. I know that I ask you many subjective things but I hope you can respond and I hope to help a little with your opinion.

      Octatrack is a pain, MPC Live is smooth. Its a DAW in your lap that you control with your hands! it feels awesome. Octatrack..... Im still just playing samples (simply) with it, Midi is awesome though...and the sequencer is better. MPC Live for creating beats/grooves with Samples-Clips / Octatrack for more of a Sound Design-Midi control Analog Synths-Warp/Shift Samples into new sounds etc.

    Hey Jade, what setup you would recommend if you want to have the digitakt workflow but not having the sample-time-limit of 11 min oder 127 samples?? I would like to record a synth and percussion sounds via microphone into the digitakt, but that would mean that you need to leave out a lot of free space in the project-folder for the new samples. can the octaktrack do that? Please dont tell me the maschine or MPC Live, straight analog ;)

    • @JAdeWii_
      @JAdeWii_  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Octatrack is kind of a pita but if you put in the time it can be rewarding. Digitakt is a sample mangler and sequencer, good for one shots. you dont want to listen, but Maschine + ;) Maschine is the most "work station" out of all the ones you mentioned, and the new Maschine is completely Dawless, SO THERE'S THAT!

    • @jaamabay3830
      @jaamabay3830 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hell no, I'm kindof done with the maschine. I worked with it for too long and I just dont like this pattern & scenes concept. In the digitakt each pattern is completely independent, so you can add as much details as you want. In maschine you need to duplicate a scene, then a pattern, then another pattern and so on. you will not do that just to add details. Just doesnt feel organic to build up an arrangement out of scenes and pattern. Plus the digitakt worklfow is just beyond! I think I will go and try the boss rc202 or 505, you can sync it with the digitakt (at least I think you can..) and there you can add synths, microphone-stuff and everything that the digitakt cant really do like recording something with overdub ;)

  • @GuitarsAndSynths
    @GuitarsAndSynths 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would say get both as they are apples to oranges. If only can get one, then MPC Live. I think that you ideally want both and a synth like an OP-1 then have DAWless setup. Not bad because a good Macbook Pro laptop with Ableton Live and Push 2 controller actually costs more $$

  • @ILLGREEN1

    I have both the Digitakt and MPC Live. And I agree with your comparison. As a Hip Hop artist, I prefer the Digitakt because its straight to the point and has an old school charm in a new school workflow. Akai just feels overrated and too stuck up of a company to support. I thought they turned a new leaf, which is why I bought the Live but its the Ren 1.0 all over again. Good thing is my Live never caused me any problems or crashed. Akai prints features on the box but you get a coming soon message, lame.

    • @alexovercast3359
      @alexovercast3359 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dawless Jammin' The virus TI sale fell through unfortunately. This is the dilemma I have now... Digitakt is only 16 bit but upconverts to 24 on the output. Also supports over bridge (huge timesaver and makes it useful in the studio). Octatrack doesn't support over bridge, making it hugely inefficient in the studio but excellent at the center of a live rig. This is what stops me from buying gear usually. My plugins in the studio and how I've set up my work flow make it easy to get great results with the DAW, but it seems I have to compromise too much to bring it on the road, unless I bring a sampler or print stems to augment a DJ set.

  • @Soundwrecker
    @Soundwrecker 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very nice comparison Jade. I'm selling my MPC Live because I bought an Octatrack. It isn't that the Octatrack beats it -- it's that the MPC Live was so much like my DAW that it didn't feel DAWless, which is what I'm going for in a sampler / sequencer. I considered the Digitakt but wanted a deep machine at the heart of my live rig. SPEAKING OF LIVE RIGS -- when do we get to see / hear one of your shows? You have a ton of sweet kit and I'd like to hear your music. Cheers.

    Great review but a more accurate comparison in reality would be to compare the MPC Live to the Octatrack. Both are about the same price and have similar features. Choosing between MPC Live and Elektron Octatrack is much harder because of the features that the Octatrack has missing from the MPC Live in terms of better analog functions.

    Hi Jade, Big thanks for this! You said it was coming and I'm really glad you did it as it is what I have been wanting to see for ages from someone. It really gives me a good idea of what I should go for! If you were me, an abstract artist that wants to create abstract soundscapes, sampling from one piece of gear at a time, creating a large array of samples from the one piece of gear and then creating a multi layered soundscape from it what would you choose? Maybe this is a bit of a weird question because rather than using it as a straight out musician, I want to use it as an abstract artist that will then paint to the soundscape, this is what I do www.edwardball.co.uk

    • @JAdeWii_

      Dawless Jammin' Thaks Jade, that is what I was leaning towards, thinking those conditional trigs would really help a creative flow with the ability to randomise. It needs to be said that the Elektron file system is annoying. The notion of starting a new project, then having to get samples from the +Drive over to the working pool, then arranging kits from the temporary "pool" is a royal PITA. By the time you get going, your ADD kicks in and you are turning the unit off. I get a lot of my inspiration from the synth side. SO I need to lay down a quick fundamental groove, so then I can go work on the synth side. The MPC can do that. Then later you can go back and modify the kick or snare, or add hi-hats to suit.

  • @joebond9435
    @joebond9435 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    In my opinion for someone doing hip hop the Digitakt is more comparable to the SP404a .
    Whit the Digitakt You get a step sequencer, midi sequencer, some nice trig tricks, LFOs and visual feedback of your waveform and also it sounds good....
    but you lose the sp404 fx, the stereo sampling, built in mic, sd card input, battery power and that sp lofi sound.
    The MPC Live and the Digitakt are just wayyyyy to different to compare them... Also it has a lot to do with your style of music and what type of equipment that your using....for people to say that the MPC is too difficult is crazy.... It has wayyyy more features so you have to put your time into it and that goes for both of these machines to get the most out of them. If you’re rocking a turntable and vinyl and a synth..... the MPC is hard to beat. That’s why I got the Digitone👌🏿
    Also if you want to make a full track with the Digitakt you’ll need a DAW for song mode..... and that’s not DAWless , no time stretching, no pitch shift no warping.... Octatrack is more like the MPC

    These are complimentary machines, not contrasting. You absolutely need both - they stimulate waaaay different creative energies.
    MPC is an entire production studio. It's the closest thing to a DAW in a box you're going to get. The Digitakt seems like a trimmed-down version of the Octatrack
    with upgraded features. If the Octatrack MKII has the the same improvements as the Digitakt, I'd say wait for that to drop next month.

I love creating ambient/soundscape stuff and any type of sample mangling along with conditional trigs makes this sound very tempting. Thanks very much for your excellent reviews on the Elektron products in comparison to close competitors. My interest in the Digitakt stems a lot from working within its limits. I am trying to get rid of more gear, using less vsts and working only with my own recorded sounds.
