I bought an expensive ceiling fan for only 25 dollars, the switch was broken , I was ready to order it but then I found your video, thank you very much, the switch is fixed because of your video.

Thank you sir for taking the time for such a detailed video. The key part before putting the cover back on is pulling the chain to engage the spring, than snap the cover on. Thanks again.

Woohoo! My husband had just spent an hour trying to reassemble our fan switch and given up out of frustration when we found your video. It's perfect! He just hadn't been pulling the spring in against the tiny nub. The still shots helped us as much as your instructions did. Excellent video, thank you, thank you!

Chain broke & I took the switch apart...everything flew out. Once I tracked down all the pieces, I had no idea how to reassemble it. This video was perfect & solved my problem for me. It was clear & easy to follow. Thanks a million!

This video is very useful. My K.T.E 308-A 3-speed switch's chain broke and the Westinghouse (Zing Ear) replacement 3-speed pull switch at HD only gives 1 medium speed. It probably has different internal wiring pattern. The old K.T.E switch is not made anymore and it would be too difficult trying to source it from overseas. So, I decided to open up the old switch by drilling 2 rivets, separate bottom housing from upper housing. I then opened the upper housing by using small flat-head screw driver to slowing pry open cover plate and reconnect the broken chain using connector from key chain.
When I opened the upper housing which has spring, every thing jumped all over and I had no clue how to put them back together correctly. After putting it back per your video, the clicking mechanism works normally and I reattached the bottom housing to the upper housing using 2 small cable ties in case I have to open it up again.
    Thank you very much.

I know this is an old thread (and I have NEVER commented on you tube before now), but this repair fix was OUTSTANDING! Thanks! True, getting a new switch was just gonna be a few bucks and some gas but I like fixing things. I had no clue what to do when this thing exploded in my hands and the pieces went flying LoL!

Well it was 98 here today and warming up fast in the house. Then the chain broke. Your first video got me started and the second showed me how to put it together right. Many thanks! I texted my wife to tell her I fixed it and she didn't have to go to Home Depot. She texted back "Who's the man?" I replied "The youtube guy!"

This is good. I fixed by just taking off the bottom case and left the top case with all wires attached with the fan. After figuring out the placement of that dang spring, and putting the cover on, it was simple to click it all back together. Good video.

Thank you for your excellent video. It helped me put together my switch. My fan is not a Hunter but an Hampton Bay fan. The switch body was almost identical. I could not use the switches from Home Depot because the wiring was all wrong. So my only other alternative was to repair the old one. I got it apart and replaced the chain but was having difficulty putting it back together. Your video did the trick. Thank you again.

Great video. The close up still shots and instruction I believe are the BEST I've watched on UTube.
I tested my switch with meter and Load was having trouble with continuity on a couple of speeds. So I wanted to see what made this thing tick and took it apart. I mean completely apart. I found a few of my copper springs were cupped a little. I decided to put it back together and try it again on the meter but when I pulled it apart it flew into pieces and could not figure out how to install the spring.
    Thank you.

Thanks so much for your patience in posting such a small repair. It really helped a LOT! Not sure why they have to have such a weak point in the switch with that thin little chain link (and it will probably break again in a couple years or so, guess it keeps the cost of the fan down; all the parts on mine are plastic, NONE of the metal parts you showed, but they work the same), but at least I know what's involved now. THANKS SO MUCH.

Make sure you write down or take a picture of the wiring to the switch before removing. Remove each wire by pushing a real small screwdriver under the wire and then pull the wire free. I started to take the switch apart and the whole thing came undone in my hand wires and all. If you did what I did you may have to take a volt meter to the wires to figure out the hot one and then touch the remaining wires one at a time to the hot one to figure out the speeds. On my switch a Hampton Bay ceiling fan switch L = blk (hot) 1=gry 2= brn 3= purp. these colors change for different fans.

I have been trying like crazy to see if I could re-assemble my hunter switch. I have the chain back inside but as you stated the spring popped everything out and I didn't get to see how it was in there. I know I can buy a new one, but this is a challenge. I have another hunter that I am just tempted to take out that switch too and look at it. It drives a soul crazy to know this should be easy to do but just can't get it right. There are only 3 parts that I need to put back together. I think I'll email Hunter.

Excellent detailed instructions. Thank you. Chris used Westinghouse 3-way light switch #77021. Westinghouse also offers "3 speed fan switch, Dual capacitor" #77288 (abt $5) which might replace both the broken Hunter switch and the Hunter capacitor, which is a separate part next to the switch. How to successfully do that I do not know.

thanks informative. two questions. i have a dayton 3c219e. 1-- is this the basic setup for most pull chain switches? 2-- are there secondary markets where i might find a person with a dead dayton who would sell the switch? any recommendations, like fan junkyards? thx

    • @Kntryhart
      @Kntryhart  8 ปีที่แล้ว

1 - The fan switch I repaired is the only one I have ever tried to fix. So I have no idea what other designs are in production.
2 - You might set up an ongoing search on ebay so that if a similar unit appears you are notified.
3 - You might consider contacting Grainger (www.grainger.com/) to see if they can supply a replacement switch. I did find this pull switch (www.grainger.com/product/DAYTON-Replacement-Pull-Chain-Switch-34G191), but the part number you supplied is not listed.
      Good luck!

I appreciate what you have on your video but need help in preloading the spring. I could send pics of my parts since they are a bit different from the ones on your video. My switch is ZE-268S6 and the actuator and indexer in one piece construction.

Honestly, I see this switch is available for not too much money. In this case, I guess I would opt to purchase a new switch. The reason I went through this effort is that the old-style switch that I had is not longer manufactured.

I've just spent a couple hours trying to reassemble the 3-speed switch from a Hampton Bay ceiling fan, but my switch is slightly different from yours. I can't figure it out, and I'm getting overly frustrated. Every time I get it back together the chain jams. There is no "click" at all. Everything seems to make sense until the placement of the chain around the spring area. The case has the small nub, but the spring is internal at the bottom and fits into a slot in the actuator before the retainer is put in.
