With his editor, Nino Baragli, Leone trimmed this down to almost 6 hours, and he originally wanted to release the film in two movies with three-hour parts.

I like how he showed how despicable people are in that life and didn't attempt to glorify it whatsoever. Even the times of living the good life in the film were shadowed with undertones of disrespect, anger and pain.
It is the only movie that I know of that is far superior to its source material. It's a good and pretty exciting book. But what makes the movie great is all of Leone's imagination. The scenes after Noodles returns, How the scenes from the 3 different timelines are reorganised, and how it becomes a story about eternal themes rather than just a gangster movie.
He's a man of few words in interviews but his craft is on the big screen. If there's somebody living in a cave somewhere who is unfamiliar with his work they would never think this quiet and humble man was responsible for some of the greatest characters in movie history.

He accepted to make the movie at one condition: to shoot his scenes in chronological order. That was kind of a mess for production and so on, but I said ok. It’s a shame what happened to this movie. Originally Leone had an eight hour film, which he shortened in to six hours, made up of two three hour movies. For whatever reason, this was cut down into the 269 minute cut (Leone’s intent), but for Cannes 1984 this was cut to 229 minutes, which was released in Europe. Then when it was first shown in America, it was shown for critics. The only cuts made were to some violence and the two rape scenes. Then, without Leone’s permission, the Ladd Company had that version of the film completely recut and re-edited, removing about 90 minutes from the film, including the final scene with ‘secretary Bailey’ and re-worked the film to being in chronological order, that version saw a wide release in the US and it was destroyed by critics and audiences, notably Roger Ebert who called it a ‘travesty’ as well as ‘an incomprehensible mess without texture, timing, mood or sense.’ Ebert and his colleague, Gene Siskel also went on record praising the original cut of the film on their show, Gene even saying the uncut version was the best film of 1984, and the edited version was the worst. It was only after Leone’s death in 1989 that the restored uncut version was seen by many in America, and it began to receive more of that praise. Then in 2012, Leone’s intended 269 minute film was announced to be shown at Cannes, however, only 251 minutes were shown due to rights issues, this is the 4 hour 10 minute extended cut. Maybe one day we’ll see the original 8 hour film, unlikely, but maybe. If not, we’ll always have the 229 minute version, and maybe one day the intended 269 minute version. In general, Once Upon A Time In America is likely one of Leone’s finest works, a true epic crime classic, at least in my opinion, I could see why someone wouldn’t like it.
That bit were Connolly and secretary Bailey are in his office before de Niro arrives brought more meaning to the ending…the released cut left all that out and when he jumped into the bin lorry you were left thinking…where’s the context behind that.
Watch this in whatever form you find on DVD, and you'll probably love it, as i did, back in '94 on UK telly. Frankly a gem of a film and perhaps one of my top 5. The Good is my favourite.

They call these shots "noddies" in the industry- usually used to cut between two shots of the interviewee so you don't see the gap in the filming. But in this case it's showing both individuals. Bit wierd.
Elizabeth Montgomery was who Robert and James were both in love with when young. Robert never knew his best friend who he loved also wanted Roberts girlfriend until he became grown man and 29 years later his best p friend he loved took his girlfriend and had child, took his money and ruined Roberts life. Robert became poor on drugs he thought he killed his best friend to protect him. Friend made this suffer for 20 years invited him to his mansion and Robert realized his friend faked his death and made Robert think he killed him and he took everything from Robert. James Said I planned to ruin your life when we we're teenagers. Robert still loved his friend. James had become rich mayor.
This is one the greatest examples of why directors(and actors) hate producers. They come in with money and 0 talent. Hence why independant movies blew up in the 70s and 90s cause they didn’t have to deal with «money lenders» so to speak. Since the end of 90s, movies have reverted back to the old habbits where the only things that get financial backing are either reboots, remakes or brainless superhero movies that will pay themselves off on account of already being popular with kids and teenagers and grown-ups with kids who grew up on the said classics/comic books. Hence no artistic integrity or personal movies whatsoever(always few examples to the rule like Paul Thomas Anderson and QT).

It's amazing how shy this man is, yet he can play just about anything and anyone. Hard watching him lose himself over that politician. I don't care for him either but no politicians (NOT ONE) are worth getting an aneurism over.

They call these shots "noddies" in the industry- usually used to cut between two shots of the interviewee so you don't see the gap in the filming. But in this case it's showing both individuals. Bit wierd.

This is one the greatest examples of why directors(and actors) hate producers. They come in with money and 0 talent. Hence why independant movies blew up in the 70s and 90s cause they didn’t have to deal with «money lenders» so to speak. Since the end of 90s, movies have reverted back to the old habbits where the only things that get financial backing are either reboots, remakes or brainless superhero movies that will pay themselves off on account of already being popular with kids and teenagers and grown-ups with kids who grew up on the said classics/comic books. Hence no artistic integrity or personal movies whatsoever(always few examples to the rule like Paul Thomas Anderson and QT).
