I'm excited to talk to a fellow low-budget independent filmmaker today.
Granted, he does low-budget films on a completely different level than I or most people do at this point. But if we are going to talk about budget filmmaking, it is only fitting to have expert horror film and television producer, Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions.
Our chat sort out knowledge gems on Jason’s mentality behind his filmmaking and the budget strategy. Especially the ‘freedom’, he’s expressed in many other interviews, he gets from a low budget --- in the essence of the chances it allows him to take.
Jason has over 200 production credits for numerous horror television and films franchises. The likes of BlacKkKlansman, Jordan Peele’s Get Out, The Normal Heart, Paranormal Activity, Elizabeth Moss’s Invisible Man, The Purge, etc.
Black As Night, the Amazon original film, is one of the twenty-five projects he’s produced that have been released this year and streaming on various top streaming platforms.
The story is about a teenage girl with self-esteem issues who finds confidence in the most unlikely way, by spending her summer battling vampires that prey on New Orleans' disenfranchised with the help of her best friend, the boy she's always pined for, and a peculiar rich girl.
He’s recognized for his multiple award-winning works and his production studio which is currently booked and busy with over fifteen projects lined up for the rest of the year to 2023.
That is a testament to his company’s high-quality production. Blumhouse is known for pioneering a new model of studio filmmaking: producing high-quality micro-budget films and provocative television series. They have produced over 150 movies and television series with theatrical grosses amounting to over $4.8 billion.
Paranormal Activity: Next Of Kin will also be coming out this December. It is the second film in the franchise. Which continues to follow a young man who became the target of a malevolent entity, he must uncover its true intentions before it takes complete control of him.
All you horror and non-horror fans out there need no further introduction about our guest. Right in time for the Halloween spirits, please enjoy my 'spooky' chat with Jason Blum.

having gone to film school and now working in advertising (trying to sell a couple scripts and finance my first feature) I have heard so many, so many people say "I want to be a director" and it always surprised me that their aren't that many of use actually putting in the work. Just take this video as an example so much knowledge in one vid, so much you can take away from it and it only has 830 views, at the time of this comment. I have probably met 830 wannabe directors/writers over the last 4 years... now they all work in grocery stores and factories (slight exaggeration but it makes my point.) and they are all surprised that they didn't make it... but they don't have a finished feature, have never attempted to finance a "cheap" feature and just haven't persuade their dreams through. So to anyone reading this, as long as your working professionally or as a side gig, on a script, a short or a feature you are ahead! thank you Alex for all you do!!
Great comment, this inspired me to go even harder!
I saw this also, so went all in on my own dreams and made a feature film.
The Prey: Legend of Karnoctus Comes out June 7th
Let me know what you think, Thanks!
I know what you mean also people should checkout film courage they have some great stuff on there and del Toro interviews help a lot
You’re describing me, I’ll admit it. I really need to get my shit together and things like these interviews and comments like yours inspire me. I can’t even be mad cause you’re right. It’s just talk until I actually do it. Thanks for the push.
Your comment just gave me a reality check. Thank you for this.
I'm seeing this 2 years later what a great interview.
How does this film not have a million views at least? The ability to talk to such an important film influence like this.
I agree so much info in this video!😮
I was thinking the same thing! This is great
Jason Blum "It was a crappy movie but we got it made."
This gives us hope !😄
Blumhouse baby.
1. Insidious, 2. Paranormal activity, 3. The purge, 4. Halloween, 5. Get out 6. The invisible man, 7. Happy death day, 8. Split 9. Whiplash 10. Upgrade.
Whiplash-! Nice
Just watched happy death day. Each scene had a new surprise. Well done. Time to watch the others.
Proud of you, Alex. Sorry but I have to keep saying it because you're just doing it, man.
Impressed by Mr. Blum. Just IMDB’d his movies and had no idea I’ve see quite a few. There are at least two of my Top movies. Lawless is completely underrated. Whiplash of course and I dig the Hunt. I could go on but my point made. Dig your style Blum. Congratulations on your hard earned success.
When Jason Blum said " I think its immoral..." I literally got tears in my eyes and goose bumps on my arms:) Great guy!
I appreciate this peak behind the curtain. Blumhouse is one of my favorite studios in that they show its possible to get indie type films into the mainstream
I love showing people Whiplash and Upgrade, fantastic movies
Truly the best filmmaking podcast out there.. Alex F50 Spider Nosotros Papa
What a great guy. Well done Alex for getting these people, hives of really great information, to impart their knowledge and experience. Many thanks.
it was such a delight to listen to you two talk. very fun and inspiring too. thank you!
I got to work with Michael Bay on the 4th Transformers movie and he was way less scary that I thought he'd be, lol. Got to meet Drew while working on TMNT too. Those were wild fun times.
What were some of the behaviours & systems, let's call them, that made the workdays flow, and be more than just bearable, but wild & fun? How might you describe some of the DNA that they brought to the collaboration, that empowered you to really get into things? : )
Excellent interview, thanks for your efforts.
Super motivational , would love to work with him one day.
AMAZING interview!! Very entertaining!!

Jason is an inspiration to me. In film school I had to make a mock presentation for a job and I picked Jason and Blumhouse as my subject
Got a 98 on the paper

Freaky was a phenomenal film!
Great interview Jason is a great guy he needs to see us small fish movies and give us a chance
I saw an advance screening of The Empty Man in LA and I told the filmmakers the intro should have been the whole movie. It was horrible like the remake of Jacob's Ladder
Lowest money-making movie in the most theaters. 60 million to make and was in 2,000 movie theaters, "Oogieloves In The Big Balloon Adventure"
"A quiet place" almost sent me to my grave lol lol lol
💎
yo what is final cut?
Final say on the edit of the film.
I'm with him on Moulin Rouge, my favorite film of all time, make fun of me if you want, I don't care.
so so so sooo goood!!
Alex you should interview Miguel Coyula author of Red cockroaches “ made it with only 2 thousand bucks .
So, just have lots of money and or friends with lots of money.
Just don't spend it all at once.
So endeth the lesson.
Good interview
Freaky was a great movie.
Interview the crews who work on these jobs. 🙃
Why is the interviewer laughing ever 2 seconds? He puts Jimmy Fallon to shame.
I think I've seen most of Blumhouse's films because they aren't afraid to do interesting stories.
My name is Karen Barragan am the chief marketing officer of blumhouse?
Are you a fan of my boss Jason Blum
Don’t ever let anyone tell you it’s not possible to succeed in movies. Even for millionaire kids like Jason Blum, Safdie brothers and Noah Baumbach…they still had to work their socks off and tirelessly network to get noticed. The movie business is totally meritocratic. Just offer something fresh, exciting and different…and someone will eventually back you, regardless of background.
Michael Bay is really great at... lol
Love Jason Blum but this interview should be in the hall of fame for how not to do an interview. The interviewer cackles constantly. His questions are disjointed. It was only because I wanted to hear what Jason Blum had to say that I continued watching. Sorry but this is Battleship Earth bad.
funny glad i moved to italy haha
So if 40 + white males are the minority target audience for these horror films.. whats the primary, and if you know, the secondary target audience that goes to see them?
Is show business make money 💰
This dude is cool af hahahaga
Good interview
