Khowarib Lodge is located in Kaokoland, the remote north-west of Namibia.
There are 12 en-suite canvas chalets available in either twin or double sleeping configuration. In addition to this there are another 2 slightly larger family chalets with a third bed. All chalets have mains electricity and adapters are available for overseas visitors. The chalets are also equipped with a coffee station and mini-fridge.
Chalets has been built in such a manner as to not disrupt the natural surroundings of Mopani trees and this has consequently lead to every chalet having a unique veranda / terrace overlooking the Hoanib River and the beautiful cliffs opposite as well as unique open air bathrooms.
Khowarib Lodge's restaurant offers a 3 course, set menu for dinner, prepared with exquisite care, ensuring a delightful taste under the usually clear and star struck skies. Breakfast is a buffet offering the healthy fruits and cereals, freshly home-baked breads, cold meats, various cheeses and a menu of bacon, eggs of preference, sausage, fried tomatoes or mushrooms, or omelettes of choice.
Lunches are available also on set menu basis. All meals include freshly brewed coffee and a wide selection of tea’s to choose from. Khowarib Lodge has a beautifully placed swimming pool to cool down or simply relax. Pool towels are kept at the bar, were drinks can also ordered and enjoyed at the pool area.
The largest population of desert adapted elephants in the world live in the surrounding area. Some estimates are that there are probably about 600 of these resourceful animals covering a large area to the west of the lodge.
The 450 000-ha Palmwag Conservancy supports the largest free-roaming population of desert-adapted black rhino in Africa.
The intriguing enigmatic Himbas are the last truly semi-nomadic tribe in Africa. They move their herds of cattle and goats vast distances over the sparse terrain to locate the necessary grazing for the animals.
Unlike the painted rock art of their cousins elsewhere in Southern Africa, stone was both the medium and the method for the ancient San artists in Damaraland. There are more than 2000 rock engravings in the area and there is archaeological evidence of human habitation here for at least the past 6000 years. The engravings could be as old as this, although no one knows, as there is no way of dating them. The most impressive rock art is a mere 20 km to the west of the lodge.
When Damara herders arrived in the 1930’s, the San moved on and that was the last of them in this valley. But the rock art they left behind tells their tale.
The north-western parts of Namibia are geomorphologically marked by the Great Escarpment Mountains which separates the highland mountains in the east from the drylands in the west. Several ephemeral rivers such as the Hoanib cut through the north-south orientated mountains, to discharge in the Atlantic Ocean at the Skeleton Coast. Deep, narrow gorges are formed coupled by valleys and basins. Khowarib Gorge forms part of the Damara sequence and Gariep complex which is dominated by Granites, gneiss and Precambrian volcanic rocks.
