    You guys should look into purchasing a shipping container, there only a couple of thousand dollars and it's a good way to store valuables and keeps every thing secure and dry.

      Getting them delivered is the problem. For the area they are in, delivery can cost more than the container itself.

      Haha, yep... "And so say all of us" :-) We are all living vicariously through these two young folks.
      But it's nice to remember my own battles with 'projects' in my early days with my partner too.
      Different problems, but the struggle, mild depression, thinking it will NEVER get done, the wild excitement at simple things going well.. the exhausted and hysterically wild excitement when difficult things go suspiciously well, lol.
      The frantic working through the nights to get "must be done before tomorrow" jobs finished.. are all very similar to everyone else's stresses I think.

    If the goal is to move the RV in the garage, why not use that plywood to build a temporary wall/door? The wall would solve the wind in garage issue, help dry in the garage and use some of that lumber you keep moving.

    ALTERNATOR Diagnosis
    The Dash Panel should Have a Battery Lamp and should light up with the key on and go out when the engine runs and then the alternator starts to charge if fitted??... check the manual!!!.
    The trick you are doing to excite the alternator should normally be done by a small current passing through the Battery Lamp to the L Terminal on the alternator.
    If you ground the L terminal with key on and engine OFF the Battery lamp should Glow, if not check the Bulb or its 12V supply to it (May be fuse, broken wire, bad connections etc). If you have a test light try connect it across the Battery Positive on the alternator to the L Exciter terminal (Small wire) like you have been doing with a Jump wire and then start the engine and the bulb should go out and the charge rate should go up to 13.V To 14.4V Rev engine up to fast idle may be to start the charge possess.
    To confirm the ground from the Alternator body to the Battery Negative place a Volt meter between those to points and Zero Volts is perfect and 12v is the worst, you should see about 0.2 To 0.5V dependent on loads on the system Any more and you have a bad ground.
    If you measure say 14V across the Alternator output and its ground and the then measure the charge rate accross the battery they should be the same in a perfect world but you always have Voltage drop so expect 0.2 to 0.3V difference from one reading to the other, May be more when the Revs are high and battery is low in charge like after starting cold.
    Good Luck (From A Auto Sparky)

    This whole house is built on detailed drawings. They know exactly the dimensions of the SIP's a whole video on windows was done, so they have that. The progress is at least 4 to 6 weeks back. So what we get till the SIP's get there, is filler video of making ice cream, cat food, clean up, heating up the hot tub, and protecting those damn (Scarfman) and snow tires from the elements, priorities for sure. And don't forget not enough daylight to do anything but we need to do a supply run in the daylight that there's not enough of.

    I was a auto electriction for 18 years. Found that Most brands use a 500 uh restore in percale to the light so if the light burns out it still has a start trickle. Back other equipment did not have this.
    Just take the charge lite & jumper a5 U Rester across the light terms. So that it gets a sence voltage.

    Dear Jesse and Alyssa...just wanted to ask if it would be possible or needed for you to cut or trim the trees from the side and back of your house just in case of forest fire..? All the best from the UK.

    • @wallykramer7566
      @wallykramer7566 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah. Maybe they could cut down all the trees and mow down the brush to protect against fires. Great plan! Then Idaho would start to look a lot like the UK.
      The trees are what make and support a rich ecosystem, moderate the climate, and provide scenic beauty. Preventing forest fires is not that hard, at least not enough to make such drastic prevention a consideration.

    Will you be sticker the sawn lumber?
    I have found that when it is not stickered it will rot the wood when damp or exposed to the elements.
    When piled and stickered, often a lid for the pile (old steel roofing or similar) will keep the bulk if the rain/snow off the material while allowing the air to move around and dry the timber.
    There are many more considerations than these, these are just some of the first ones.
    House is looking great!
    Congrats!

    On my backhoe, the alternator blink out light actually conducts a small current to the rotor to provide what is often called "flashing". This provides enough magnetism in the rotor so the alternator can bootstrap itself up and supply its own field current. Make sure the light comes on before the engine is running. On my old Ford 555C I have to rev it up to about 900 RPM so it starts to charge at initial start.

    A question, possibly a suggestion, since you are having problems with the elements entering the lower part of your build through the open garage door portals, why not use that plywood to build a temporary wall and seal off that area, or when you take the plywood back, use that money to purchase garage doors. Either approach will help to reduce some of the problems you are experiencing.

    • @mrackerm5879
      @mrackerm5879 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed, but that is in the works. They also complain about all the crap that blows into their garage area and the fact that the air still gets up under the plastic they put on the decking. Most people don't realize how long this takes. Tract home builders in our area put up the stick frame and it can sit naked for anywhere from a day to a month waiting for the sheeting and roof decking to get applied.

      From looking at previous videos it looks like they toenailed the posts with structural screws and enforced from below by sistering boards to the floor joist. That combined with the SIPS once installed will keep everything firmly in place.
      Rest of the framing uses wood joinery you can find in their prior videos.

    • @madmodders
      @madmodders 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      He toenailed screws down into the floor as a quick solution until the panels are in place. The frame just sits on top of the floor and could otherwise justy slide around if a strong enough wind came. There is no joinery there.

  • @gonzo_the_great1675

    Alternators I know (UK cars), have a sense line, which goes to the charging indicator lamp on the dash. Typically, the alternator relies on the small current through this indicator (from the switched 12V on the shas) to start powering the field. As the alternator voltage comes up, this sense line will be powered from the alternator diode pack. So the alternator is pulling itself up by it's bootstraps, so to speak. Eventually the sense line is brought up to the same voltage as the switched 12v line, and so the lamp goes out.
    So the feed from the key switched 12V to this lamp needs to be there and the bulb needs to be working, or you may not get it to start to charge.
    I've seem faults like this where someone has had a dead indicator lamp and also where LED replacement bulb has been fitted here.

    • @jamesofguysrefinishing8714
      @jamesofguysrefinishing8714 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      gonzo_the _great i was thinking the same.
      It needs to resistance from the bulb to function.... in an older car at least.
      Not sure about backhoes

    • @gonzo_the_great1675
      @gonzo_the_great1675 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      On stopping the engine at 9m12s, I see no lamp illumination as the engine dies. Which you usually see, as the bulb is being back powered from the diode pack, into the impedance of the switched 12V, once turned off at the key.
      I am assuming similar wiring as a car though.

    • @jamesofguysrefinishing8714
      @jamesofguysrefinishing8714 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      gonzo_the _great yep pretty much sums up how it functions on older obd1 vehicles.
      The more modern stuff can generate its own field and has no use for the bulb, the check light is the switched on/off via to computer

    • @gonzo_the_great1675
      @gonzo_the_great1675 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I started looking into tape for poly plastic.. one of the manufacturers also sells tape.. some of it seems pretty serious but its for building fish ponds so its fish safe and underwater.. I didn't even look at the price it had to be insane... they also had butyl tape which is that asphalty kinda stuff with double side peal away paper on the roll .. that had to be insane too.. probably good for roof shingles.. I was thinking spray adhesive if you could get like a foot wide strip of poly and spray it with that to make your own kinda tape.. basically contact cement.. but thats kinda drastic and expensive .... ah well... someone must know i bet.. its been really chilly here on the east coast .. single digits overnight for a few weeks now... people aren't use to those temps .. I tell you it has me thinking about a wood stove as a backup but i do have a kerosene heater so thats easy enough if its only for a few days or a week or two its not so expensive to run in an emergency.... one thing at a time right.. and then you turn around and things are getting done. stay dry ... be happy :o)

    Do you have to short out this terminal when you first start the tractor for the day? Or do you have to short it every time you shut it down?
    I believe when you short out the alternator your flashing the field wiring, that is, your momentarily are inducing a current which excites the field wiring. Once excited it retains the field and continues to output. I suspect if you trace out the wire (that is connected to this terminal) there will be a low resistance to ground. Just enough of a short that drains off any residual charge “left” in the field when the alt is shut down. The purpose of this residual field charge is to restart the alt each time.
    Just a thought!

  • @fordmaveric1

    the exciter wire for the alt has no power, should get 12 volts with ignition on, often an increase in revs will self excite the alt and it will start charging

      My father inlaw has never swept his in 12 years since the current flue was fitted. I’m happy with once a year on a stove that’s used lots. If the timber is of the correct moisture content seasoned correctly and the burn efficient the amount of tar and solid deposits will be reduced.

    Hey Guys, you could waterproof your roof by adding a U-Shaped Frame around the edges of your plastik with some of the leftover wood you moved in this video and some stapling. I know you would create a little pond by doing this, but if your plastic is waterproof it is at least a watertight pond and most of the water will flow of the edge where the opening of the U-Frame is. I personally don't trust Tape under constant rainwater and wind.
    Keep up the good work and greetings from Germany :)

    Hey bud do ur flashers work? Just wondering I am a mechanic and actually used to work for a case dealer one time I had backhoe like urs alternator would not charge and exciting circuit for he alternator was tied into the flashers, if they don’t work check the flasher fuse and check again

    • @paulcopeland9035
      @paulcopeland9035 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Andy....This type of alternator is, indeed, looking for a closed "exciting circuit" to operate. I have seen this accomplished many times in older vehicles by adding a pilot light across the circuit. It would be handy to have an "operating" indicator anyways. Now that I think of it, maybe there is one already in place and he just needs to replace a burned bulb. Sure would be worth a check.

    installe an advanced-roof (leng(th: 9ftor less?) sloped at 45 ° just above the entrance of the garage, you will
    protected the objects deposited at this place from the rain whipped by the wind towards the bottom of the garage........ until the real doors will be ..
    Bon courage from France.

  • @ianlevine273

    Jessie, there are about 3 major setups for alternator connections, post a mfg/model info or a picture of the back of it and your subs will have plenty of suggestions on how troubleshoot or wire around the problem on the backhoe. From your description it sounds like you have the type that has a bootstrap power input through a charging light bulb. If the connection is broken or the bulb is burned out, to it for a second while it’s running would make it charge until the next time it’s turned off. If that’s working, the quick and dirty fix is to install the jumper with a momentary switch and tap it each time you start. You don’t want it connected all the time because it will drain the battery when it’s not running.

  • @compfreak530
    @compfreak530 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    The alternator issue is easy. most likely a bad wire to the ign switch. you need battery voltage on both the big wire and the small wire when running. once you jump it the alt will output on both

  • @thaboom4
    @thaboom4 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    As a temporary fix you can run a wire from the field terminal on your alternator to the start terminal on the starter. Will energize the alternator to start charging when you turn the key. Many other tractors and equipment is setup similarly.

  • @GKD41
    @GKD41 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    On that wire off the Alternator, it sounds like you have a Fusible Link burned out.
    If this, then at either end could be another wire spliced in. (If this is the case, this is a good chance to learn soldering wires)
    But start looking up Fusible Link for the tractor.

    • @GKD41
      @GKD41 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you have access to a Multimeter, then you can check for Continuity in the wire, end to end.
      But a Fusible Link wire will be hard & brittle, if it is burned out.
