    We know to recognize that all these so called clans like irarak, goria, etc, sound very close to Luo. In Padhola we have jokarwok, jorarak, jogoria.
    Above all we need to appreciate that Iteso and luo are both nilotes. Both originally from Ethiopian area. Luo moved to Sudan earlier due to some conflicts and adventurous nature too, settling around Bar el Ghazel for years which most history consider as luo cardle land. Whether the Kumam were among the plain nilotes or river lake nilotes doesn't remove them from being similar.
    Movements during migration came along with lots of experiences and transformation of which each group was affected differently by time and space.
    Some lost partial identity, some maintained a lot of their identity with little borrowing and some few adjustments as development. These are inevitable. Even now, we still continue to undergo transformation and developments, adopting and modifying languages, dress code, housing, foods, etc. Change is a permanent factor of life.
    I still believe all the nilotes could have borrowed bits of things from each other long even before migrations began.
    I was surprised to learn that in kupsabiny exist some words like us, the jopadhola; such as chamu che (kupsabiny) eat food similar to chami chemo (dhopadhola) eat food.
    Kome chair (kupsabiny) komi chair (dhopadhola).

    Lovely conversation this was KP..
    Ancient history will always have various fragmented theories.. explanations and suggestions that do not completely agree.. and is quite common that they sharply differ/conflict..
    The two dimensions/theories below disagree totally..
    - "Okumu-mam" => "Kumam"
    - Jo "kumo" => "Kumam"
    The truth and exact facts are burried in the history of centuries gone..
    Big thank you to the gentleman (Ejakait/Jadhuong Erayu) for the very broad summary on the Kumam identity.

      The Kumam were originally called Jop'Okumu.
      Historicallx, the Luo were the ones who introduced ground nuts and millet as they came in the area.
      The luos settled in the area before the Ateker.
      The variants of alaki,atirir are found on Acholiland as kilak, atira.
      Lwala is s Luo word as the Ateker call itt Angorom..
      We Jopadhola maintain that the Kumam are Luo in origin and not Atekerin as they never lost their Luo language according to extensive research.

    The Luo, the Lango and Kumam have interacted more than 500 years .This interaction has led to assimilation . These groups have intermarried therefore Kumam ancestry would not be 100% Ateker DNA but Luo-Kumam or Luo-Lango . The same way Luo assimilated Suba is same way Luo assimilate Lango and Kumam . Assimilation includes intermarriage .

    • @papd3532
      @papd3532 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The guest is confusing modern political expediency with historical facts . Historically the Kumam were assimilated into Luo as your previous guest confirmed .
      In modern times groups compete on resources and can use identity politics to achieve the same.
      Hence the need to identify as Ateker for more resources from national government as opposed to under Lango who also historically are assimilated .
      Assimilated groups have a fluid identity .
      Two guests you have brought from Kumam one has confirmed Kumam are Luo the other one initially said Kumam are Ateker and later after you provide historical facts agreed that Kumam are assimilated hence Luo-Kumam .

    • @papd3532
      @papd3532 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If the Kumam benefited resource-wise for identifying with Luo most would do the same. Conflicts in Uganda between Yoweri Museveni's NRA and the Luo including LRA necessitated the Kumam to downplay their Luo identity for survival .
      The same applied to when the Luo-Langi and Luo-Acholi were fighting Idi Amin .
      In 1979 Gen Tito Okello(Luo-Acholi),Gen Bazillio Olara Okello(Luo-Acholi) and Gen Oyite Ojok(Luo-Langi) led Uganda exiles in Tanzania and removed Idi Amin .
      Mwanza, Mara and Kisumu were used as launching pads for these soldiers and it was easy for the soldiers to live among the local groups including the Luo of Tanganyika . At least 300 Luo-Acholi soldiers died when their boat capsized in L Victoria.
      The Nubians in Kenya especially in Kisumu and Kendu have survived by identifying with Luo groups .
      In Kenya the Luo were politically active for centuries to this day and therefore in modern Kenya there were political expediency plans to separate Suba from Luo . This failed .

    • @papd3532
      @papd3532 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Daniel Moi like Yoweri Museveni started creating these types of divisions through creating districts in regions that opposed him including Nyanza . This failed because the Suba are assimilated into Luo .
      Milton Obote(Luo-Langi) started efforts to unite the Luo together with VP Oginga Odinga in East ,North East, Central Africa .
      Yoweri Museveni fought Milton Obote, Gen Tito Okello, Gen Bazillio Olara Okello and later JOSEPH KONY and Okot Odhiambo and others . Therefore it makes sense for Yoweri Museveni to go for political expediency to separate assimilated groups .
      The same issue is happening in Sudan where the Dinka and Nuer have made attempts in the past and present to seperate Luo groups . These include Luo-Shilluk, Luo-Balanda,Luo-JurChol etc since Luo unity in Sudan would pose a challenge to Dinka and Nuer hegemony .

It seems hostilities from both iteso and lango groups. Kumam appear to have gravitated towards the luo due to the general peacefulness of the luo nature.
    There is no shame in this. Kumam people are welcome with open arms. My suba friends from Migori and Homabay County are definitely more luo than l am, and yet l am pure kisumo luo. It would be so offensive if I even suggested to them that they are anything but luos. Good job we are all African and black 😊❤❤❤❤❤.

    Luo is a lingua franca to peoples around them even if they were not originally Luo as Okot p'Bitek wrote in one of his books. The Luo like assimilating others in order to expand Luoness. While other people associate with the Luo they begin speaking Luo and give their children Luo names. For example, the Lango speak Luo. A big chunk of the Iteso around Tororo started giving their children Luo names and also speak Dhopadhola a Luo language. In that way neighbours of the Luo have to make themselves understood by learning Luo.

    • @odochokee9856

    Hello, kumam,lango, and suba are not originally Luos, they resemble Luos simply because they married Luo ladies and ended up speaking the Luo language

  • @paulwabwiiyi9083

    Kumam in Uganda are not looked at a Luo. The real Luo are : Alur, Acholi, Langi, Japadhola. The Kumam are more like the Teso with little Luo influence coming from neighboring the Langi. They even share names with Teso. Their names are about 5- 6 letters and start with letter E, have 2 or 3 consonants and 3 nowels. Eg Epitu, Emasu, Ekesu,Elamu...Please don't mislead by bundling them among the Luo.

    I agree that the Kumam are not Luo. Ethnically, they seem more related to kalenjin and maasai than Luo.

      Kalenjin and Maasai are not ateker ...Kalenjin are Highland Nilotes,Infact the closest to Kalenjin are Murle tribe .
      Maasai are not related to Kalenjin lingusistically ,forget the cattle aspect .

      I wasn't speaking to the language. I speak English, that doesn't make me an English man. I was alluding to the ethnicity. I was born in Kenya and the Kumam, to me, are similar to Turkana, Samburu, Maasai than they are Luo by culture. Even the interviewee says they are distinct. They only speak the language. @@paulwabwiiyi9083
