  • Learn this simple trick to take drums recorded in a small drum room and process them so they sound just like drums recorded in a huge drum room!
Joel Wanasek shows how to do it in Cubase using the stock EQ, Roomworks reverb, envelope shaper and Waves L1 Limiter, but the same techniques should be easily applicable to any DAW and equivalent plugins.

I use this trick. One suggestion. After you have duplicated and effected. Render and time align the tracks so that as a mix engineer/ drummer someone like me doesn't get annoyed with every snare hit sounding like a Flam. I picked this trick up from Warren Huart. It takes a little extra time and some practice to get it right, but the results are good. Thanks for your free content. I really enjoy your vids and blogs. Thanks for a forum for us to share ideas. Have a great week.

Smashing that limiter is distorting it nicely too!

I think that out of phase came from EQ - since it's done in parallel to original signal.

How about using the transient designer twice instead of putting a limiter there? Would that more natural sound be better? Or not good enough?

Delaying that fake room by 20ms could get rid of the phasing without killing the body of the snare
